EXCLUSIVE: Understanding AI technology and its use in Singapore
When one is to define what Artificial Intelligence (AI), they may be quick to say that it is the technology being used by Ironman in the Marvel movies. While that is AI, we are far from achieving that. So, what is AI and how are we using AI in the world today? OpenGov had the honour of interviewing Prof. Chen Tsuhan, Deputy President (Research and Technology) and Distinguished Professor at National University of Singapore (NUS). He also serves as the Chief Scientist of AI Singapore, a national programme in artificial intelligence.
New app can detect early signs of eye cancer in kids - Express Computer
Researchers have developed a smartphone app to help parents detect early signs of various eye diseases in their children such as retinoblastoma, an aggressive pediatric eye cancer. The CRADLE app (Computer-assisted detector leukocoria) searches for traces of abnormal reflections from the retina called leukocoria or "white eye", a primary symptom of retinoblastoma, as well as other common eye disorders. The app can be downloaded for free and can be found under the name "White Eye Detector." The study, published in the journal Science Advances, found that the app is an effective tool to augment clinical leukocoria screenings, allowing parents to efficiently and effectively screen their children more often throughout their development. "We suspected that the app would detect leukocoria associated with other more common disorders and some rare ones," said study researcher Bryan F. Shaw from Baylor University in the US.

Why does the Australian construction industry fear Artificial Intelligence? โ Architecture . Construction . Engineering . Property
The Australian construction industry is far behind the rest of the world when it comes to digital innovation โ a critical ingredient in meeting the demands of our rapidly growing population. With immense building and infrastructure pipelines in our cities, we must, as a nation and an industry, embrace digital innovation and artificial intelligence in order to unlock greater efficiencies, improved productivity and accuracies to future-proof our cities, particularly as we face scarcity in labour resources. Infrastructure planning and delivery requires a very specific skillset, not one that is easily transferable from the building sector. It should be home grown through our university system and imported from overseas through skilled migrants as our general population and transportation requirements are growing so quickly that we can't keep up. Simply, there's more work than there are skilled workers.
Was it Worth Studying a Data Science Masters? - KDnuggets
Since completing my Masters in Data Science, I have had a number of people contact me asking for my experience with the course and whether it is worth recommending. Therefore, I thought it best to summarise my decision for starting the course, what I have achieved during my studies, and the outcome in the years following. It was the spring of 2016 and I was coming towards the end of a 6 month internship at one of the largest consulting firms in the City of London. I had taken this role to gain experience and figure out whether becoming an Actuary was the correct route for my career. I quickly found passion in the data analytics of the role as I was being pulled into meetings to discuss numbers I had crunched or was able hack together a tool to automate previously manual tasks.
Self-Driving Corporations?
John Armour is Professor of Law and Finance and Horst Eidenmueller is the Freshfields Professor of Commercial Law, both at the Faculty of Law at the University of Oxford. This post is based on their recent paper. In a recent essay, we explore the implications of artificial intelligence (AI) for corporate law. Today, corporate law is primarily understood as a means of facilitating productive activity in business firms. On this view, it is a predominantly private endeavor, concerned with helping parties to lower the costs they encounter.
