SAP formally revealed the planned general availability of hotly anticipated new cloud data storage products during CTO Juergen Mueller's keynote address at TechEd conference in Barcelona Monday. Two of those new offerings -- SAP HANA Cloud and SAP Data Warehouse Cloud, which are bundled under the SAP HANA Cloud Services umbrella -- were announced earlier this year and are expected to ship "before Christmas," Mueller said. SAP HANA Cloud is a new cloud-native version of the core HANA database that is delivered as a container and can be managed on the SAP Cloud platform using the Kubernetes resource manager. According to Mueller, SAP HANA Cloud gives customers a single place to store data from a variety of sources -- for analytics and transaction processing -- and manage it in a variety of ways. "SAP HANA Cloud offers one data access layer for all your data sources," he said.

Researchers from Brown University and Intel Corp. are working together to develop new artificial intelligence-based technologies aimed at helping victims of spinal injuries walk again. When someone suffers an injury to the spinal cord, the electrical signals from the brain can no longer pass to the muscles, which leads to paralysis. Such injuries are devastating because the human body cannot regenerate severed nerve fibers by itself. But medical professionals believe that AI technologies could help some victims to regain control of their muscles. Now, backed by a $6.3 million grant from the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the researchers from Brown University and Intel are embarking on a two-year effort to create those technologies.

A branch of machine learning called deep learning has helped computers surpass humans at well-defined visual tasks like reading medical scans, but as the technology expands into interpreting videos and real-world events, the models are getting larger and more computationally intensive. By one estimate, training a video-recognition model can take up to 50 times more data and eight times more processing power than training an image-classification model. That's a problem as demand for processing power to train deep learning models continues to rise exponentially and concerns about AI's massive carbon footprint grow. Running large video-recognition models on low-power mobile devices, where many AI applications are heading, also remains a challenge. Song Han, an assistant professor at MIT's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), is tackling the problem by designing more efficient deep learning models.

During the construction of BBVA's current headquarters in Madrid, criteria was used to ensure its maximum energy efficiency and minimum environmental impact. Together with the use of recycled, sustainable material; the inclusion of extensive green areas; and a sprinkler system that uses rainwater, 50,000 sensors were installed at the bank's headquarters to detect and collect data about the status of the facilities, the environmental conditions, and the proximity of people. BBVA's new corporate headquarters in Madrid have become an architectural and sustainability landmark. Architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron have designed not only a smart but an environmentally and people friendly city, reflective of the financial group's global digital transformation strategy. "Once the complex was functioning and after analyzing all this data, we realized that it didn't have to be limited to properly managing the facilities, it could also further improve our energy efficiency and reduce costs," explains Borja Eugui Pemán, BBVA Head of Facility Management.

The SEC receives approximately 3,500 new productions, totaling nearly 10TB after processing, each month. The Royal College of GPs is inviting clinicians and healthcare professionals in primary care to provide insight on how AI will impact them. Together with UCL, the RCGP is in the early stages of piloting an AI tool for educational purposes. However the College has called for help, via a survey and working group, in testing this tool and providing insight into how work in primary care might be impacted by the introduction of AI more widely. The College is forming an online community to test and support artificial intelligence (AI) activities, including the chatbot AI tool for education. Across the UK significant effort is being expended to develop AI for example the Department of Health Northern Ireland is investing in Queens University Belfast to support AI for precision medicine.
