Rethinking the Mayflower: How I Came to Build an Autonomous Ship to Cross the Atlantic - THINK Blog

#artificialintelligence

To cross the Atlantic with an unmanned, autonomous ship will push technology to its limits. Like the Mayflower's 101 passengers in 1620, we'll also need a lot of help and some good luck. I grew up in Boston, Massachusetts. I spent a lot of time messing around in the ocean, swimming and diving. Unlike my friends and brothers, I preferred looking at the fish to eating them.

Abu Dhabi AI university open for applications

#artificialintelligence

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) will host graduate-level courses in artificial intelligence (AI) at a new university in its capital, Abu Dhabi. The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) aims to enable students, businesses and governments to increase the use of AI technology. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE minister of state, said: "Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence is an open invitation from Abu Dhabi to the world to unleash AI's full potential. "AI is already changing the world, but we can achieve so much more if we allow the limitless imagination of the human mind to fully explore it." The university, which will be located in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi, is tapping experience from across the world with a board of trustees from respected universities in the UK, the US and China. MBZUAI will offer postgraduate (MSc and PhD) courses in computer vision, machine learning and natural language processing. It is now open for admission to the academic year 2021-2022. Registration will begin in August 2020, with the first students starting the following month. All graduate students admitted will be offered a full scholarship and other benefits, including a monthly allowance, health insurance and accommodation. It will also help graduates find work and internships with local and global companies. MBZUAI has partnered with the Abu Dhabi-based Inception Institute of Artificial Intelligence for the supervision of PhD students and curriculum development, as well as collaborative research. Michael Brady, interim president at MBZUAI, said: "Following decades of research into machine learning and artificial intelligence, we are now at a turning point in the widespread application of advanced intelligence.

Your Next Boss Could Be a Computer

#artificialintelligence

At its core, technology exists to make our lives easier. Thanks to artificial intelligence, our tools have gotten smarter, and we're more productive as a result. According to a study released earlier today, workers around the world not only recognize AI's importance in the modern workplace โ€“ they embrace it. Conducted over the summer in partnership between Oracle and Future Workspace, the second annual AI at Work study asked 8,370 employees, managers and HR leaders from 10 countries about AI and its place in their work. Researchers found that AI is rapidly changing not only how we conduct business, but the very relationship between people and the tech they use every day.

The problem of rural internet access: How AI is helping

#artificialintelligence

Many of these people live in rural areas, where fiber, coaxial cable, DSL or any other kind of broadband infrastructure is scarce or nonexistent. This is a huge issue for rural community administrators and school officials who have been struggling to help their communities. For example, students can use the internet in school, but when they go home to do their homework, they have no access. At Revolution D, I've been working with these local officials to try to help them solve their problems. Technology has changed a lot in the past few years--what's known as fixed wireless technology is becoming more widespread.

Neural Networks: Is Meta-learning the New Black?

#artificialintelligence

I've written several times about how the "economies of learning" are more powerful than the "economies of scale". Through a continuous learning and refinement process, organizations can simultaneously drive down marginal costs while accelerating time-to-value and de-risking projects via digital asset re-use and refinement (see Figure 1). Think about how us lowly humans learn. Whether trying to hit a golf ball or playing the piano or water skiing, we learn though the "feedback loop of failure". And the more real-time, immediate that feedback loop, the more quickly we can assess what we did wrong, adjust and then try again.

AI Insights in Automotive - Connected World

#artificialintelligence

In the world of AI (artificial intelligence) there are a lot of exciting companies making their mark in a pretty impressive way in the automotive industry. Some of these disruptive startups are truly giving us all a glimpse of where the AI market is headed. Ford and its Ford City Insights program, which uses its AI and data from traffic cameras, parking garages, and other sources to share mobility-related information is a perfect example. This AI-powered database is able to predict where collisions are more likely to happen or where microtransit solutions will be most valuable within city limits. Three of the six new cities are Austin, Indianapolis, and Detroit, and reports suggest the other three will be Miami, Pittsburgh, and Grand Rapids.

Label Encoder vs. One Hot Encoder in Machine Learning

#artificialintelligence

If you're new to Machine Learning, you might get confused between these two โ€“ Label Encoder and One Hot Encoder. These two encoders are parts of the SciKit Learn library in Python, and they are used to convert categorical data, or text data, into numbers, which our predictive models can better understand. Today, let's understand the difference between the two with a simple example. To begin with, you can find the SciKit Learn documentation for Label Encoder here. Now, let's consider the following data: In this example, the first column is the country column, which is all text.

How AI Addresses these 4 Concerns in Live Streaming

#artificialintelligence

AI and its immense potential, spanning a range of areas, can address some of the major issues in Live Streaming. FREMONT, CA: Streaming constitutes a considerable share of all the data moving around. Video forecast is expected to account for 82 percent of internet traffic by 2022. Artificial intelligence (AI) will play a key role in the streaming industry. With AI's capability to impact a range of industry aspects, leaders are trying to utilize the technology to enhance the streaming space as well.

Separating Artificial Intelligence Myths from Reality

#artificialintelligence

LAS VEGAS--Artificial intelligence (AI) has pervaded most categories of HR technology, and those it hasn't touched are likely to see its impact soon. But questions and myths persist around the use of AI, issues that a panel of HR, talent acquisition and learning leaders explored in a session at the recent HR Technology Conference & Exposition. Jeanne Meister, founding partner of Future Workplace, an HR advisory and research firm in New York City, moderated the panel. "The conversation in HR has moved fully toward how AI and humans will best work together," Meister said. The conversation no longer is only about how AI will displace jobs." One slide in the presentation highlighted this quote from a Harvard Business Review article: "Over the next decade, AI won't replace managers.
