How Artificial Intelligence is helping farmers in Indian villages India News - Times of India

#artificialintelligence

TOKYO: Last year, an anguished young farmer in Maharashtra's Amravati district flattened his entire cotton crop spread over three acres of land. What drove him to take the extreme step? His crop was damaged by the dreaded pink bollworm pest, a wily worm that eats away cotton bolls and causes extensive crop damage. Sadly, he is not the only cultivator in the state dealing with the problem. Thousands of farmers in Maharashtra have been grappling with the pink bollworm menace for several years despite switching to the genetically-altered BT seeds, which are supposed to resist the pest.

Top Text Analytics Company In USA Automated Email Routing Semantic Indexing

Around 20% of the attorney's time is consumed by their legal research on previous judgments, case files and recordings. Especially in Patent application filing where the prior art search involves manual keyword-based searching for related patents. A good part of the attorney's time is spent on such mundane and repetitive work that they don't have time to invest in the more innovative and creative aspects of patent applications. We are working on building a semantic analysis tool that will do a semantic search on all the documents to pre-select existing closely related to the new cases for the attorney to review. The ability to search within a defined boundary and also across the web would help attorneys to increase their efficiency.

$60M gift to create major initiative in artificial intelligence at IU

#artificialintelligence

The gift will fund the construction of a building, which will be the center of this initiative. It will also enable the creation of six endowed chairs, six endowed professorships and six endowed faculty fellowships, as well as graduate and undergraduate scholarships, including scholarships for high-achieving Hoosier students, to support the initiative. The overall goal of the gift is to accelerate the progress of the school as one of the best of its kind in the world. In recognition of this extraordinarily generous gift and in recognition of Luddy's continued leadership and landmark support of the school's mission, IU trustees have approved naming the school in his honor; it will now be known as the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering. The naming and gift were announced Thursday at a meeting of the school's Dean's Advisory Council, of which Luddy is a member.

Did Amazon Go automate cashier jobs, or relocate them? - TechHQ

#artificialintelligence

When Amazon debuted its automated convenience store in Seattle in early 2018, I was impressed with the consumer experience but also aware of the long-term ripple effects. At a time when the self-checkout machine market was expected to grow, due in part to labor shortages and lowered kiosk prices, Amazon leapfrogged over that technology and many others, such as mobile payments. They went from self-checkout to no-checkout. The company had, in effect, done the exact same thing that allowed it to dominate the e-commerce side of things: They made shopping easier. To use industry lingo, they reduced the friction of transactions.

Why Chatbots Should Be Part Of Your Crisis Communications Plan

#artificialintelligence

Back in 1966, the first chatbot, Eliza, was created by Joseph Weizenbaum at MIT. Eliza operated very simply and ran scripts imitating a therapist. Users would input words to Eliza's system and Eliza would use those words to choose a prescripted response. While Eliza certainly wasn't up to handling the complex tasks of today's chatbots, the idea that people could interact meaningfully with chatbot technology kicked off nearly 60 years ago and remains a viable communication process today. In fact, on Facebook alone, there are reportedly 300,000 chatbots currently active and more than eight billion messages are exchanged via chatbots every month. I get it, you get, the business world gets it.

DeepMind AI beats humans at deciphering damaged ancient Greek tablets

New Scientist

Artificial intelligence is learning to decipher damaged ancient Greek engravings. The AI seems to be better than humans at filling in missing words, but may be most useful as a collaborative tool, where researchers use it to narrow down the options. There are thousands of ancient inscriptions we already know about, with dozens more discovered every year. Unfortunately, many have become eroded or damaged over the centuries, resulting in segments of text being lost. Figuring out what the gaps could be is a difficult task, involving looking at the rest of the inscription and other similar texts.
