Automated AI analysis of cardiac magnetic resonance images can be just as accurate as trained clinicians--but 186 times faster. Researchers say the technique can improve evaluations and reduce inconsistencies in interpretation. Cardiovascular MRI is the reference standard to assess the structure and function of a heart's left ventricle, a key imaging biomarker used for clinical decision making and as a clinical trial outcome measure. However, clinical analysis of these MRIs is significantly variable. The analysis is often not standardized, and there are avoidable inconsistencies when using human interpreters, such as noise or bias.
NSF leads federal partners in accelerating the development of transformational, AI-powered innovation
NSF's AI Research Institutes program will support longer-term research than typical grants. The National Science Foundation today announced the creation of a new program that will significantly advance research in AI and accelerate the development of transformational, AI-powered innovation by allowing researchers to focus on larger-scale, longer-term research. The National Artificial Intelligence Research Institutes program anticipates approximately $120 million in grants next year to fund planning grants and up to six research institutes in order to advance AI research and create national nexus points for universities, federal agencies, industries and nonprofits. "Advances in AI are progressing rapidly and demonstrating the potential to transform our lives," said NSF Director France Cรณrdova. "This landmark investment will further AI research and workforce development, allowing us to accelerate the development of transformational technologies and catalyze markets of the future."

Voleon sees itself as at the vanguard of the next wave of quantitative investing, using machine learning to unearth patterns too faint for others to detect.

Banks Are Promoting 'Female' Chatbots To Help Customers, Raising Concerns Of Stereotyping
"Mia" is the virtual assistant introduced by Australian digital bank Ubank in February 2019. These aren't the members of a new, all-female rock group, but names that several large banks have been giving to their automated digital assistants. So-called chatbots have become a useful cost-cutting tools for companies with large subscriber bases (think banks, insurance firms and mobile phone operators). As they replace human call-center workers, such bots will help save banks an estimated $7.3 billion in operational costs by 2023, Juniper Research predicts. But the proliferation of bots with female names raises questions about whether they might also perpetuate gender stereotypes, particularly around the notion of women in the role of assistants.
Wing launches drone delivery in Christiansburg, Virginia
As of this afternoon, select residents of Christiansburg, Virginia can tap drones operated by Google parent company Alphabet's Wing for quick and easy deliveries of packages, over-the-counter medications, snacks, and gifts. The company today revealed that it's become the first to operate a commercial air delivery service directly to homes in the U.S., with the launch of a previously announced pilot involving FedEx Express, Walgreens, and local Virginia retailer Sugar Magnolia. From Walgreens, the first retail pharmacy to partner with Wing in the U.S., drone fleets will ferry over-the-counter medicines and other wellness items to folks' homes. And on the FedEx Express side, recipients living within designated Christiansburg zones who opt in will receive some shipments via drone, in customized boxes. Most orders within the four-mile radius of Wing's distribution facility are fulfilled within about 10 minutes, according to the company.
