IBM Announces New Watson AI, IBM Cloud Capabilities, Customers

#artificialintelligence

IBM this afternoon issued several updates to its public cloud and Watson AI portfolios, including news that Aegean Airlines, BNP Paribas, ExxonMobil, Elaw Tecnologia SA (a Brazil-based legal management company) and Home Trust "are selecting IBM public cloud as their preferred destination for mission critical workloads," Big Blue said. On the AI front, IBM announced updates to its "Watson Anywhere" strategy designed to scale AI across any cloud and to ease AI implementations, according to the company. Drift Detection – Intended to address the concerns about data privacy and algorithm accountability, IBM announced the "Drift Detection" capability within Watson OpenScale, an AI platform launched last year to detect bias and to enable understanding of how AI arrived at its results. IBM said Drift Detection Drift Detection indicates how far a model has "drifted" by comparing production and training data and the resulting predictions it creates. Alerts are issued when a user-defined drift threshold is exceeded.

Three Big Questions on Artificial Intelligence and Schools

#artificialintelligence

Artificial Intelligence is changing banking, health, business, and the military. But so far, it has been slow to go big in K-12 education, said Scott Garrigan, a professor at Lehigh University at a session at the International Society for Technology in Education's annual conference here. But that is likely to change in the coming years, he said. No sector will be untouched by AI. It will produce changes as big as the automobile," Garrigan said. "We have no idea what's going to happen as AI rolls out massively.

10 ways data and analytics will impact businesses

#artificialintelligence

Augmented analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) are among the top data and analytics technology trends that have the potential to significantly change business operations in the next three to five years, according to a presentation at the Gartner Data and Analytics Summit in Sydney this week. Data and analytics leaders must examine the potential business impact of these technology trends, and adjust business models accordingly--or risk losing competitive advantage to companies that do, Rita Sallam, research vice president at Gartner, said at the event and in a press release. "The story of data and analytics keeps evolving, from supporting internal decision making to continuous intelligence, information products and appointing chief data officers," Sallam said in the release. "It's critical to gain a deeper understanding of the technology trends fueling that evolving story and prioritize them based on business value." With digital transformation efforts underway at most organizations, businesses are collecting more data than ever before, creating challenges but also major opportunities, Donald Feinberg, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner, said in the release.

The team at ASI created "Polly," an AI that predicts voter intentions based on publicly available social media data.

These Startups Are Building Tools to Keep an Eye on AI

#artificialintelligence

In January, Liz O'Sullivan wrote a letter to her boss at artificial intelligence startup Clarifai, asking him to set ethical limits on its Pentagon contracts. WIRED had previously revealed that the company worked on a controversial project processing drone imagery. O'Sullivan urged CEO Matthew Zeiler to pledge the company would not contribute to the development of weapons that decide for themselves whom to harm or kill. At a company meeting a few days later, O'Sullivan says, Zeiler rebuffed the plea, telling staff he saw no problems with contributing to autonomous weapons. Clarifai did not respond to a request for comment.

Five Tech Startups Powering the Construction Site with AI - AEC Business

#artificialintelligence

We featured 10 startups in our earlier post. Here are five more startups that are in in the vanguard of turning AI into a value-adding technology for construction sites. APE Mobile is on a mission to make construction easier by using disruptive technology to make the complex simple and arm contractors with the information they need. They are now adding Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) capabilities to bring the user answers when and where they need them. "Ask a question and it gives you answers, instantly.

WADA and Fonds de Recherche du Québec to fund three projects researching the use of artificial intelligence for anti-doping (21 October 2019)

#artificialintelligence

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), in conjunction with the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ), is pleased to announce funding for three projects that will explore the possible uses of artificial intelligence (AI) to advance the global anti-doping program. Following a call for applications for targeted research on the application and impact of AI in the area of anti-doping, eight proposals were received and, after a period of careful assessment by WADA and FRQ, the successful projects were selected for funding. WADA Senior Director, Sciences and International Partnerships, Dr Olivier Rabin, said: "AI is an exciting area to be explored and WADA believes there is enormous untapped potential for its use within anti-doping, particularly when it comes to the analysis of big data. In time, we think it could have a hugely positive impact. These three complementary projects will help shed some light on the extent of AI's potential in the anti-doping context and we are pleased to be able to support what we hope will be important pieces of research."

Banks Use AI to Detect if It's Really You

#artificialintelligence

Financial firms are working to identify potential fraud by analyzing how customers hold their phones, how fast they type and other information about mobile interactions--and the strategy is yielding results. Using artificial-intelligence tools to crunch behavioral data is often a more secure way to verify customers than traditional means such as passcodes, experts say. The Federal Bureau of Investigation warned companies last month that cybercriminals can circumvent typical multifactor-authentication techniques. One way is by calling a telecommunications company, posing as a customer and getting a service agent to switch that person's phone number to the criminal's device. The fraudster can then have the individual's bank send a one-time passcode to the phone and gain access to the target's bank account.

Scientists are using satellites to spot stranded whales from SPACE

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Satellites could help locate stranded whales more efficiently and in real-time. Scientists have begun harnessing the power of the technology's high-resolution imagery to detect and monitor whales stranded on the shore from space. The team noted that the use of satellites will help find stranded whales in remote locations, as well as spot potentially deteriorating ocean conditions. Satellites could help locate stranded whales more efficiently and in real-time. Scientists have begun harnessing the power of the technology's high-resolution imagery to detect and monitor whales stranded on the shore from space Chile witnessed one of the largest mass mortality of baleen whales in 2015 on the remote beaches of Patagonia – at least 343 died.
