In a low-volume distributed denial-of-service (LVDDoS) attack, an adversary attempts to overwhelm the server by making requests specially crafted to use an inordinate amount of the server's resources. The imbalance between the resources used by the server and attacker during an LVDDoS attack allows otherwise resource-constrained adversaries to mount effective attacks on large systems. Standard defense tools focus on metrics such as the number of requests and don't focus on nuanced metrics such as user experience. We propose Canopy, a novel approach for detecting LVDDoS attacks by applying machine learning techniques to extract meaning from observed patterns of TCP state transitions. We differentiate between malicious and benign traffic by employing a supervised learning approach, using features extracted from the temporal patterns of TCP state transitions.

Hyundai's Smart Cruise Control copies your driving style through AI
For driving enthusiasts, ceding control of your braking and acceleration to technology like adaptive cruise control may feel a little relaxing, but may also feel a little robotic. Looking to bring a little human intuition to the experience, Hyundai has revealed it is working on a new form of cruise control that studies the driving style of the person behind the wheel and then mimics their habits with a little help from machine learning. Hyundai calls its new system SCC-ML, or Machine Learning based Smart Cruise Control, and it is part of the company's Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). It bills SCC-ML as the first cruise control technology to incorporate artificial intelligence. It works by using sensors, camera and onboard computer to monitor the human driver's patterns and habits.

In 1979 Pamela McCorduck published the first modern history of artificial intelligence, Machines Who Think. She'd first met AI when she was an undergraduate English major at Berkeley, and became steeped in the culture at Stanford and Carnegie Mellon Universities. The encouraging increase of AI in UK healthcare
The study, conducted by YouGov, included the input of some 1,000 business leaders and 4,000 employees. The study found that regarding the use of AI in UK healthcare industry, 46% of healthcare leaders reported their organisation used the technology in some capacity, which essentially reflected an 8% increase compared to 2018. The biggest growth areas reported were research-level AI, which grew 13% in the past 12 months, and robot process automation (RPA) and general automation both increased by 10%, while the use of voice recognition technology increased by 9%. Darren Atkins, chief technology officer at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust, said: "AI in healthcare is an extremely exciting prospect. It's not about replacing staff, but allowing them to maximise their skills, be more efficient, spend more time with patients and, ultimately, get better outcomes." While the adoption of AI in healthcare was below that of the national cross-industry average of 56%, Microsoft explained how the findings demonstrated "recognition of AI's transformative potential for healthcare organisations is becoming increasingly widespread โ not just when it comes to central or so-called'back office' processes but by genuinely enhancing the quality of patient care".
