Illinois Leads the Way on AI Regulation in the Workplace
Illinois continues to lead the way in privacy and security legislation. The Prairie State is home to the Biometric Information Privacy Act, first of its kind legislation regulating the collection and possession of biometric information, and also the Personal Information Protection Act, considered one of the more expansive data breach notification laws in the nation. And now, in what has been described as "the momentous legislative session in decades", the Illinois state legislature unanimously passed the Artificial Intelligence Video Interview Act ("the AIVI Act"), HB2557, which imposes consent, transparency and data destruction requirements on employers that implement AI technology during the job interview process. The AIVI Act, the first state law to regulate AI use in video interviews, will take effect January 1, 2020. Notification โ The employer must notify the job applicant that AI will be used during the video interview for the purpose of analyzing the applicant's facial expressions and consider the applicant's fitness for the position.
Jaguar reveals a new electric sport scar but there's a catch: You can only drive it in a video game
Jaguar has revealed its next electric car, the Vision Gran Turismo Coupรฉ, but speed freaks won't be able to put their foot on the pedals. Described as a'hypercar', the Coupรฉ will be powered by a 750kW engine with 1,000 horsepower, capable of going from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than two seconds. It will also be capable of reaching top speeds of more than 200mph. It will also feature a futuristic holographic dashboard display that can adapt the information it shows to drivers depending on where they are and what they're doing. The only way to drive it is in the video game, Gran Turismo according to a new report from The Verge.
NASA announces lunar rover that will scour the Moon's south pole in search of water and ice by 2022
NASA says it will put a robotic rover on the moon that can aid the agency in its search for lunar water. The four-wheeled vehicle, which NASA has dubbed the Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover, or VIPER, will be the size of a golf-cart and use various science instruments to probe the moon's surface for evidence of water and ice. VIPER is set to be delivered to the moon's surface by December 2022 and once there it will collect 100 days worth of data designed to map potential water sources. NASA's VIPER rover (rendering above) will explore the moon for water and help to guide an ongoing plan to return humans to the lunar surface A mobility'testbed' (pictured above) is was created to evaluate the rover's mobility system. It's toolkit for detecting water will include a drill able to bore beneath the surface and a spectrometer than can detect moisture.
Would You Like Fries With That? McDonald's Already Knows the Answer
But in the coming years, the company's machine learning technology could change how consumers decide what to eat -- and, in a potentially ominous development for their waistlines, make them eat more. So far, the technological advances can be experienced mostly at the chain's thousands of drive-throughs, where for years menu boards have displayed a familiar array of McDonald's favorites: Big Macs, Quarter Pounders, Chicken McNuggets. Now, the chain has digital boards programmed to market that food more strategically, taking into account such factors as the time of day, the weather, the popularity of certain menu items and the length of the wait. On a hot afternoon, for example, the board might promote soda rather than coffee. At the conclusion of every transaction, screens now display a list of recommendations, nudging customers to order more.

VDOO secures $32M for a platform that uses AI to detect and fix vulnerabilities on IoT devices โ TechCrunch
Our universe of connected things is expanding by the day: the number of objects with embedded processors now exceeds the number of smartphones globally and is projected to reach some 18 billion devices by 2022. But just as that number is growing, so are the opportunities for malicious hackers to use these embedded devices to crack into networks, disrupting how these objects work and stealing information, a problem that analysts estimate will cost $18.3 billion to address by 2023. Now, an Israeli startup called VDOO has raised $32 million to address this, with a platform that identifies and fixes security vulnerabilities in IoT devices, and then tests to make sure that the fixes work. The funding is being led by WRVI Capital and GGV Capital and also includes strategic investments from NTT DOCOMO (which works with VDOO), MS&AD Ventures (the venture arm of the global cyber insurance firm), and Avigdor Willenz (who founded both Galileo Technologies and Annapurna Labs, respectively acquired by Marvell and Amazon). VDOO -- a reference to the Hebrew word that sounds like "vee-doo" and means "making sure" -- was cofounded by Netanel Davidi (co-CEO), Uri Alter (also co-CEO) and Asaf Karas (CTO).

Milestone: BERT Boosts Google Search
Google built its brand on Search, and the tech giant has not forgotten that. In what the company calls "the biggest leap forward in the past five years, and one of the biggest leaps forward in the history of Search," Google today announced that it has leveraged its pretrained language model BERT to dramatically improve the understanding of search queries. The next time when you search in Google you won't need to worry about speaking or typing each word precisely to get the results you're looking for, thanks to BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers). BERT is a neural network-based technique for natural language processing (NLP) pretraining introduced and open-sourced by Google last year. When applied to ranking and featured snippets in search, BERT models can process words in relation to all other words in a sentence rather than considering them one-by-one and in order. This enables a better "understanding" of context, which is particularly helpful when it comes to longer, more conversational queries, or searches where prepositions strongly affect meaning.
doc.ai Digital Health Trial Aims to Improve Precision in Epilepsy Treatment
The study, led by principal investigator Robert Fisher, MD PhD, professor of neurology and neurological sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine and director of the Stanford Epilepsy Center, will deploy and test A.I. to develop a predictive model for treatment. Epilepsy, a neurological disorder characterized by unprovoked and recurrent seizures, affects 65 million people across the globe and 3.4 million in the United States. While the cause of seizures is largely unknown, more than 25 medications have been developed to help manage symptoms. The method of drug delivery is still largely a matter of trial and error with over 14,000 possible combinations of up to three drugs to analyze and correlate for treatment, leaving patients suffering from severe side effects and adverse reactions, sometimes for years. "We're testing our A.I. capabilities to help clinicians and their patients to find the optimal anti-seizure drug for an individual," said Walter De Brouwer, CEO of doc.ai.
