Why Hasn't AI Mastered Language Translation? - Liwaiwai
Their creator observed, "And now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do." According to the myth, God thwarted this effort by creating diverse languages so that they could no longer collaborate. Language remains a barrier in business and marketing. Even though technological devices can quickly and easily connect, humans from different parts of the world often can't. Translation agencies step in, making presentations, contracts, outsourcing instructions, and advertisements comprehensible to all intended recipients.
How AI Can Help Solve Unsolved Crimes
To date, the use of AI services in policing has largely been in the areas of facial recognition and resource use in more effective ways, but a recent study led by the University of Northumbria highlights how to help prevent unsolved crimes, particularly by providing insights into weapons used in the crime. "Machine learning uses a range of algorithms to create complex data relationships," say the authors. "By careful fine-tuning, they can be used to estimate the salient features of ammunition used in a specific shooting event from the associated gunshot residue (GSR) deposited on surrounding surfaces or objects, including spent cases, injuries and, potentially, shooter's arms." The team believes that their approach represents a significant improvement from existing methods of GSR analysis, and the new approach represents unprecedented accuracy. This is the approach the group believes will bring new insight into some of the past high and unsolved crimes, such as the Bloody Sunday murders of 1972.
Video game tests your skills in a climate change apocalypse
A new video game pulls inspiration from the nostalgic 1980s game'Oregon Trail', but adds a futuristic twist where gamers can test their skills in a climate change apocalypse. Called'Climate Trail', refugees travel through a world destroyed by climate change while encountering dangerous scenarios, such as heatwaves and melting Artic ice, until they reach a safe zone in Canada. Characters in the game will also stop along the path to share scientific facts about global warming, sea level rise and greenhouse gas emissions throughout the game. In ' Climate Trail ' refugees travel through a world destroyed by climate change while encountering dangerous scenarios, such as heatwaves and melting Artic ice, until they reach a safe zone in Canada The Oregon Trail became a hallmark in elementary schools in the 1980s and was designed to teach children about the lives of 19th-century pioneers as they traveled across the United States in search of a better life. The player assumes the role of a wagon leader guiding a party of settlers from Independence, Missouri, to Oregon's Willamette Valley via a covered wagon in 1848.
Hyundai set to test robo-taxis on public streets in California
Hyundai is set to release a fleet of robo-taxis on the public streets of Irvine, California next week. Although the crossovers will be equipped with a self-driving system from Chinese startup Pony.ai, a human will be seated at the wheel during this trial. The South Korean carmaker is using what it deems'BotRide' to study how people behave in an autonomous ride share. Hyundai is set to release a fleet of robo-taxis on the public streets of Irvine, California next week. Although the crossovers will be equipped with a self-driving system from Chinese startup Pony.ai, a human will be seated at the wheel during this trial To summon the robotic vehicle, customers will order rides through a smartphone app, which will direct passengers to nearby stops for pickup and drop-off.
Sony's $2,900 robotic dog AIBO will soon be able to turn on microwaves, vacuum cleaners and more
If you've ever thought turning on your microwave or vacuum cleaner was too hard, the solution may be as easy as spending $2,900 on a robotic dog that will do it for you. That's the operating theory behind Aibo, a robotic pet canine created by Sony, which was released last year. Sony has been continually adding features to Aibo and the latest features will allow the small robotic dog to communicate with a range of household smart appliances to help make life easier for its owners. According to a report from Gizmodo, Sony hosted a demonstration of the new features at the CEATEC show in Tokyo, Japan's largest IT and electronics trade show. One example showed Aibo communicating wirelessly with a smart microwave, telling it to start cooking a snack as soon as its owners come home from a long day.
Machine Learning Approaches to Predict 6-Month Mortality Among Patients With Cancer
Question Can machine learning algorithms identify oncology patients at risk of short-term mortality to inform timely conversations between patients and physicians regrading serious illness? Findings In this cohort study of 26 525 patients seen in oncology practices within a large academic health system, machine learning algorithms accurately identified patients at high risk of 6-month mortality with good discrimination and positive predictive value. When the gradient boosting algorithm was applied in real time, most patients who were classified as having high risk were deemed appropriate by oncology clinicians for a conversation regarding serious illness. Meaning In this study, machine learning algorithms accurately identified patients with cancer who were at risk of 6-month mortality, suggesting that these models could facilitate more timely conversations between patients and physicians regarding goals and values. Importance Machine learning algorithms could identify patients with cancer who are at risk of short-term mortality. However, it is unclear how different machine learning algorithms compare and whether they could prompt clinicians to have timely conversations about treatment and end-of-life preferences. Objectives To develop, validate, and compare machine learning algorithms that use structured electronic health record data before a clinic visit to predict mortality among patients with cancer. Design, Setting, and Participants Cohort study of 26 525 adult patients who had outpatient oncology or hematology/oncology encounters at a large academic cancer center and 10 affiliated community practices between February 1, 2016, and July 1, 2016.
Adding Conversational AI to Your Contact Center
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is nothing new in the call center. The use of robots to assist with answering customer inquiries and routing callers to the right agent has been used for quite some time. As technologies advance and new uses for sophisticated robots make their way into the workforce, these same interactions are becoming more natural and increasing overall experiences. As a result, businesses are reducing spend and realizing improved engagement. The latest push to get AI to become even more accepted is what's being called "Conversational AI." Especially in today's digitally advanced world, millenials and even older demographics are coming to expect easier transactions online.
Lawyers of the world: Robots aren't replacing you--yet
ArtificiaI intelligence (AI) may soon render many jobs obsolete. Remember how popular one-hour photo shops were in the 1980s and into the mid-1990s? That's just the tip of the tech iceberg, as AI now seems to be gunning to take over the legal world. The UK-based Law Society noted in a study earlier this year: "Over the longer term, the number of jobs in the legal services sector will be increasingly affected by automation of legal services functions. This could mean that by 2038 total employment in the sector could be 20% less than it would otherwise have been, with a loss of 78,000 jobs -- equal to 67,000 full-time equivalent jobs -- compared to if productivity growth continued at its current rate."
Illinois Leads the Way on AI Regulation in the Workplace
Illinois continues to lead the way in privacy and security legislation. The Prairie State is home to the Biometric Information Privacy Act, first of its kind legislation regulating the collection and possession of biometric information, and also the Personal Information Protection Act, considered one of the more expansive data breach notification laws in the nation. And now, in what has been described as "the momentous legislative session in decades", the Illinois state legislature unanimously passed the Artificial Intelligence Video Interview Act ("the AIVI Act"), HB2557, which imposes consent, transparency and data destruction requirements on employers that implement AI technology during the job interview process. The AIVI Act, the first state law to regulate AI use in video interviews, will take effect January 1, 2020. Notification – The employer must notify the job applicant that AI will be used during the video interview for the purpose of analyzing the applicant's facial expressions and consider the applicant's fitness for the position.
Jaguar reveals a new electric sport scar but there's a catch: You can only drive it in a video game
Jaguar has revealed its next electric car, the Vision Gran Turismo Coupé, but speed freaks won't be able to put their foot on the pedals. Described as a'hypercar', the Coupé will be powered by a 750kW engine with 1,000 horsepower, capable of going from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than two seconds. It will also be capable of reaching top speeds of more than 200mph. It will also feature a futuristic holographic dashboard display that can adapt the information it shows to drivers depending on where they are and what they're doing. The only way to drive it is in the video game, Gran Turismo according to a new report from The Verge.
