AI project greenlit after reducing A&E attendances by a third
An AI project which successfully cut A&E attendances by a third has been greenlit for a wider rollout. Over 1,000 patients were involved in a trial of an AI system developed by Health Navigator at York Teaching Hospitals Foundation Trust over the last four years. AI was used to identify patients at risk of unplanned hospital admissions. By highlighting these patients, nurses were deployed to help coach them over six months on how to improve their health and reduce the risk of visiting A&E. The trial resulted in a 30 percent reduction in unplanned hospital admissions and a 25 percent reduction in planned admissions.
11 expert tips to search Google better, faster, more strategically
Searching on Google has become second nature for billions of people. In fact, Googling is so entrenched in our culture, it's become the generic word for looking things up online. Yet even though you long ago mastered the essentials, there's still a lot most of us can learn about how to search faster and more effectively. Senior Google research scientist Daniel M. Russell recently published "The Joy of Search: A Google Insider's Guide Going Beyond The Basics." USA TODAY caught up with Russell in New York where he was teaching a "Grow With Google" class on search strategies.

#techTips -- Artificial Intelligence, Hype vs Reality
There's no doubt in my mind that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will play an important role in people's lives in the future, just like any other important technological milestones: personal computers, the internet, LCD monitors, peer-to-peer, mobile computing (smartphones), social media, and even cloud services (as much as I dislike it), streaming and many more. AI is like the next logical step in the advancement of technologyโฆ but it's not ready for prime time. The AI we have today are half-bakedโฆ even fake. The fact that services using AI still really on humans to "train" them to get things right or to accompany them to ensure "safety" (yet still didn't stop a fatality from happening) mean it's not ready for real-world application. Headlines exaggerate articles on AI-related products or services, only to reveal in the story heavy involvement of individuals in the field to ensure it does what it's supposed to do.
More than 3,000 apply to world's first AI university in Abu Dhabi
The recruitment process has begun for the world's very first university dedicated to artificial intelligence, here in the UAE. More than 3,000 people have started the process to attend The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, which will open for students from September 2020. World's first artificial intelligence university to open in Abu Dhabi The university, based in Abu Dhabi's Masdar City, received the majority of applications from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Egypt, India and China. More than 230 eager students have completed applications to attend next year's course - less than two weeks after the launch of the university was announced. "It is gratifying that there has already been such a strong expression of interest so quickly after the announcement," said Prof Sir Michael Brady, interim president of MBZUAI.
Busted: AI will fix it Digital Society Blog
There is a strong belief on the internet that AI will solve basically all of future society's problems, if we just give it enough time. Christian Katzenbach took a close look at this myth to determine whether there is truth to it. In time for this year's Internet Governance Forum (IGF), Matthias Kettemann (HIIG) and Stephan Dreyer (Leibniz Insitut fรผr Medienforschung Hans-Bredow-Institut (HBI)) will be publishing a volume called "Busted! As an exclusive sneak peek, we are publishing an assortment of these myths here on our blog โ some of those have been busted by HIIGs own researchers and associates. The entire volume will be accessible soon at internetmyths.eu.
Can Artificial Intelligence Help Pinch Poachers?
From elephants and rhinos to sea turtles and lemurs, poaching is quickly driving many endangered species to the brink of extinction. Often, governments and activists struggle to effectively monitor vast expanses of land for handfuls of poachers who travel at night. So what if artificial intelligence did it for them? In South Africa, conservationists were making no headway on preventing rampant rhino poaching. HluhluweโiMfolozi Park, the "birthplace of rhinos," was a particular hotspot, logging hundreds of dead rhinos in a single year.
Alexa, did he do it? Smart device could be witness in suspicious Florida death
Police in Florida are investigating whether they have stumbled on a silent witness to a possible murder and are trying to get the truth from "her". Sylvia Galva Crespo, 32, was killed by a spear to the chest at home in Hallandale Beach, Florida, north of Miami, in July, which her husband, Adam Crespo, 43, has portrayed as a mysterious accident. But police believe the Amazon Echo smart speaker devices in the home, known as Alexa because of the common "wake" word used to activate them, may have heard and recorded something relevant during the fatal altercation when the couple argued after a night out, the Sun Sentinel reported. "It is believed that evidence of crimes, audio recordings capturing the attack on victim Silvia Crespo that occurred in the main bedroom โฆ may be found on the server maintained by or for Amazon," police wrote in a legal filing. Adam Crespo is charged with second-degree murder.
Will AI Stimulate The Cooling Economy? Not Any Time Soon
Today's economic growth numbers were underwhelming. Many economists predict that our economy will continue to grow throughout 2019, but that this economic growth will be at a lower rate than it was in 2018. Artificial intelligence will likely help boost economic growth in the long run, but will have little to no effect on economic growth over the next few years. The change in gross domestic product (GDP) is a well accepted metric for measuring economic growth. According to recently released data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, third quarter GDP growth this year was 1.9 percent, down from second quarter growth of 2.0 percent and first quarter GDP growth of 3.1 percent.
Google: Not just a Search Engine Analytics Insight
Google, as an organization, started as a graduate project in the lobbies of Stanford in 1998. Founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin had the brilliant thought they could design algorithms to deal with the world's public data all the more effectively. Google was relentless in its quest for artificial intelligence even before the present influx of AI commercialization took off. Alphabet is disrupting healthcare services, auto, government agreements, and more with AI. It might be difficult to envision when neural networks, AI calculations at first was inspired by biological neural networks, were having a drought.
