AI driving 'next generation' of UK jobs

#artificialintelligence

The uptake of artificial intelligence (AI) by industry will drastically change the UK job market in the coming years – with 133 million new jobs expected to be created globally. In the UK alone, up to a third of jobs will be automated or likely to change as a result of the emergence of AI, impacting 10.5 million workers, according to recruiter Robert Walters and market analysis firm Vacancy Soft. IT professionals dedicated to data management appear to be the fastest growing area within large or global entities, with volumes increasing ten-fold in three years – an increase in vacancies of 160 per cent since 2015. Data roles across the board have increased by 80 per cent since 2015, with key areas of growth including data scientists and engineers. The emergence of data scientist as a mainstream profession has seen job vacancies increasing by 110 per cent year-on-year.

Shell and Kongsberg Digital form digital twin partnership

#artificialintelligence

Kongsberg Digital signed an agreement to digitalise the Nyhamna facility, a gas processing and export hub for Ormen Lange and other fields connected to the Polarled pipeline. A/S Norske Shell is entering the partnership as operator of Ormen Lange and on behalf of Gassco as the operator of Nyhamna. The value of the contract scope, with a digital twin, is approximately $11mn, with deliverables starting from Q4 2019. It will utilise the Kognifai Dynamic Digital Twin to create a virtual representation of the gas plant and its behavior – continuously updated with integrated information reflecting the status of the facility in real time. As the technical service provider at Nyhamna, Shell will be equipped with the ability to simulate scenarios and uncover new options for optimisation of its real-life counterpart.

Over the course of the past year, it seems that more and more attention is being paid to ensuring that AI is used in ethical ways. Google and Microsoft have both recently warned investors that misuse of AI algorithms or poorly designed AI algorithms presents ethical and legal risks. Meanwhile, the state of California has just decided to pass a bill that bans the use of face recognition technology by California's law enforcement agencies. Recently, startups such as Arthur have been attempting to design tools that will help AI engineers quantify and qualify how their machine learning models perform. As reported by Wired, Arthur is trying to give AI developers a toolkit that will make it easier for them to discover problems when designing financial applications, like unveiling bias in investment or lending decisions.

Artificial Intelligence in logistics: examples, opportunities, risks

#artificialintelligence

In this article you will learn what Artificial Intelligence is, how it works and what opportunities it offers for logistics and supply chain management! AI provides for increasing process efficiencies, supplies most accurate prediction models and enables an unprecedented ability to adapt to changing markets - no surprise that last year more than $ 40 billion were invested in the research of Artificial Intelligence globally. Many people regard it as one of the most important growth drivers for logistics over the next few years and as the most important key to competitiveness. Definition of Artificial Intelligence: The term Artificial Intelligence refers to the ability of machines to interpret different problems and to independently develop suitable solutions. Instead of working through rigid algorithms AI-Machines make their decisions afterwards and can therefore acquire a well-founded wealth of experience. With its help, they can develop ever better solutions and even make predictions.

How close is the 'Dark Fate' predicted for humanity by the 'Terminator' saga?

#artificialintelligence

"Terminator: Dark Fate," the sixth installment in the long-running science-fiction franchise, opens Friday and posits a world in which a self-aware computer builds an army of killer robots it then uses in an attempt to wipe humanity off the face of the Earth. It's the same vision that filmmaker James Cameron dreamed up for the first "Terminator" movie in 1984, well before the advent of autonomous drones and advanced machine learning made the premise seem a little less science fiction. In that 35-year span, a variety of technological advancements in AI and robotics have brought elements of "Terminator" closer to reality. Artificial intelligence experts are confident, however, that the kind of independent AI and humanoid robots of the movie franchise are still far off. But they also offer a warning: the developments that people have made in AI and military technology could create their own kind of "Judgement Day." "AI is a powerful technology, but it's a tool, not unlike a pencil," Oren Etzioni, CEO of the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, told NBC News.

London-headquartered Kheiron lands $22m in Series A funding

#artificialintelligence

Kheiron Medical Technologies, a startup that aims to help radiologists detect breast cancer earlier by using deep learning, has announced this week the closing of a $22m Series A round led by London-headquartered VC firm Atomico. Connect Ventures, Greycroft, Hoxton Ventures and EXOR Seeds, existing backers, also participated. The startup was founded in 2016 by Peter Kecskemethy and Tobias Rijken, and its first product, called Mia (Mammography Intelligent Assessment), was created to help improve outcomes for the millions of women living with breast cancer globally. It is designed to analyse standard full-field digital mammography (FFDM) images in a breast cancer screening setting and support radiologists in making the clinical decision to recall a patient for further investigation or not. "In my childhood I spent many hours in my mother's radiology department watching her carefully read and report imaging studies and struggling with workloads and working conditions," said Dr Peter Kecskemethy, chief executive of Kheiron.
