Philippe Starck is a name that became a brand. From the habitation module on the new international space station to Steve Jobs' yacht, Philippe Starck's list of achievements speaks volumes. I interviewed one of most emblematic figures of design in the Peninsula's bar Felix in Hong Kong–a bar that he designed, of course. Philippe Branche: How do you see the future of design? Philippe Starck: I don't see one.

The mind-bending calculations required to predict how three heavenly bodies orbit each other have baffled physicists since the time of Sir Isaac Newton. Now artificial intelligence (A.I.) has shown that it can solve the problem in a fraction of the time required by previous approaches. Newton was the first to formulate the problem in the 17th century, but finding a simple way to solve it has proved incredibly difficult. The gravitational interactions between three celestial objects like planets, stars and moons result in a chaotic system -- one that is complex and highly sensitive to the starting positions of each body. Current approaches to solving these problems involve using software that can take weeks or even months to complete calculations.

Technology's fine--I definitely like texting, and some of the shows on Netflix are tolerable--but the field's got some serious kinks to work out. Some of these are hardware-related: when, for instance, will quantum computing become practical? Others are of more immediate concern. Is there some way to stop latently homicidal weirdos from getting radicalized online? Can social networks be tweaked in such a way as to not nearly guarantee the outbreak of the second Civil War?

In the past two years, artificial intelligence has morphed from academic marvel to global megatrend. The Fourth Industrial Revolution is a way of describing the blurring of boundaries between the physical, digital, and biological worlds. It's the collective force behind many products and services that are fast becoming indispensable to modern life. Think GPS systems that suggest the fastest route to a destination, voice-activated virtual assistants such as Apple's Siri, personalized Netflix recommendations, and Facebook's ability to recognize your face and tag you in a friend's photo. As a result of this perfect storm of technologies, the Fourth Industrial Revolution is paving the way for transformative changes in the way we live and radically disrupting almost every business sector.

Announced at Microsoft's annual Ignite conference in Orlando, Fla., the tool is the first major product launch for Microsoft 365 since Microsoft Teams, an enterprise collaboration tool announced in 2017. Microsoft 365 includes Office 365, a cloud-based suite of apps including Outlook, Word and PowerPoint; Windows 10; and Microsoft's security services for businesses. The tool uses AI models to comb through millions of data points that a business stores in Microsoft services, including those found in emails, documents and calendars. It then automatically generates "topic cards" about company projects, products, customers and internal experts. "It's a way to help [employees] get access to knowledge, enterprise and learning, within the context of their work," said Jeff Teper, corporate vice president of Microsoft Office 365.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies have the potential to transform health care by deriving new and important insights from the vast amount of data generated during the delivery of health care every day. Medical device manufacturers are using these technologies to innovate their products to better assist health care providers and improve patient care. The FDA is considering a total product lifecycle-based regulatory framework for these technologies that would allow for modifications to be made from real-world learning and adaptation, while still ensuring that the safety and effectiveness of the software as a medical device is maintained. Artificial Intelligence has been broadly defined as the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs (McCarthy, 2007). Artificial intelligence can use different techniques, including models based on statistical analysis of data, expert systems that primarily rely on if-then statements, and machine learning.
