Artificial intelligence helps retailers anticipate customer needs
Retailers are increasingly using artificial intelligence to manage their stores and monitor shopping behavior and offer better experiences, as we discover in the second installment of Mergers & Acquistions' 7-part series, Retail Tech M&A. There are 7 technologies retailers are investing in through M&A: The Internet of Things enables enhanced personalization, such as custom drive-thru menus. Artificial intelligence applications predict customers' needs. Modern data centers and warehouses fill orders quickly. Robots assist with sorting and packing consumer goods.
'Buffy' Should Have Been Set in the Virgin Islands
In Cadwell Turnbull's sci-fi novel The Lesson, powerful aliens occupy the US Virgin Islands. Turnbull, who grew up on Saint Thomas, says he meets many people who have no idea that the Virgin Islands even exist. "When I first went to Pittsburgh for my undergrad, I would talk to people about the Virgin Islands, and a lot of people just had no idea that we were territories of the US," Turnbull says in Episode 387 of the Geek's Guide to the Galaxy podcast. "Because it's so small--the population is a couple hundred thousand people--it's easily overlooked." Turnbull first got interested in fantasy and science fiction from watching shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Uber's Mistakes, 'Ford v Ferrari,' and More Car News
But sometimes we take a look back. This week, we ran an excerpt from a new book that did just that, by examining how one psychologist's tireless investigation into WWII plane crashes inadvertently created an entire new field of study, and one that contributed directly to everyone's favorite 20th century tech product: the Macintosh computer. We also wondered what would happen if the makers of this year's (good!) car film Ford v Ferrari had included a bit more gearhead porn. It's been a week: Let's get you caught up. In an interview, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi likened Saudi Arabia's assasnation of Jamal Kashoggi to the decisions that lead to the death of an Arizona woman who was struck and killed by a testing self-driving Uber vehicle.

Nebraska researchers partner with Library of Congress
How can the United States Library of Congress -- one of the world's largest repositories of information -- bring its collections into the digital age? It's a question library leadership has been attempting to answer, and a collaboration between the Library of Congress and University of NebraskaโLincoln scholars and students has laid a strong foundation for machine learning to play a role in future digital strategies. In 2018, the Digital Strategy Division of the Library of Congress released a five-year digital strategy for the library, with a goal of maximizing the value of its collections for research. As part of that strategy, the library began seeking a collaboration to test machine learning across different materials, since the library's collections are so varied. The Aida digital libraries research lab, led by Husker researchers Elizabeth Lorang, associate professor in University Libraries, and Leen-Kiat Soh, professor of computer science and engineering, were awarded a research services contract following a call for proposals from the library.
Six Ways Airports Are Improving Safety
The aviation industry takes airport safety and security very seriously. But this mindset can lead to excessive wait times and significant frustration for travelers. Fortunately, there are many changes in the works, as technology advances aim to make the airport experience smoother and faster. Here are six ways airports are improving their safety measures while becoming easier to use. One safety measure going through the trial stage is a very powerful walk-though passenger scanner that can recognize potential hidden threats without passengers needing to stay still or remove items of clothing.
The Week in Tech: Algorithmic Bias Is Bad. Uncovering It Is Good.
And my colleague Cade Metz reported that artificial intelligence services from Google and Amazon both failed to recognize the word "hers" as a pronoun, but correctly identified "his." Other, similar algorithms "generally don't give women enough credit" when analyzing text, he added. Algorithms are written by humans, who are inherently biased -- and that can seep into the way they frame the analysis that underlies their code. Artificial intelligence software is trained on data that contains all kinds of human biases, which can then appear in its own inferences. "What algorithms are doing is giving you a look in the mirror," Sandra Wachter, an associate professor in law and A.I. ethics at Oxford University, told me.
Google awards $25 million in global AI impact grants
Google today awarded $25 million in grants to a range of organizations to help them apply machine learning to fight some of the world's biggest challenges. Recipients range from New York City's fire department, which wants to find ways to reduce emergency call response time, to an experiment to track air quality with sensors attached to mopeds in Uganda, information that may shape public policy. The program is also an extension of Google's AI for Social Good program, which provides flood forecasting to communities in India and is researching how to provide speech recognition for more people with disabilities. More than 2,600 applications were received since the contest was announced in October from 119 countries around the world, Google.org The news was announced today onstage at the Google I/O developer conference by CEO Sundar Pichai and AI head Jeff Dean.
