These rules could save humanity from the threat of rogue AI

#artificialintelligence

The possibility of man-made machines turning against their creators has become a trendy topic these days. Undoubtedly, Isaac Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics are no longer fit for purpose. For the sake of the global public good, we need something serious and more specific to safeguard our limitless ambitions - and humanity itself. Today, the internet connects more than half the world's population. And although the internet provides us with convenience and efficiency, it also brings threats. This is especially true in an age in which a good deal of our daily life is driven by big data and artificial intelligence.

Microsoft's A.I. and research chief Harry Shum is leaving

#artificialintelligence

Microsoft said on Wednesday that Harry Shum, the executive vice president in charge of its artificial intelligence and research group, is leaving the company in early 2020. Kevin Scott, the company's chief technology officer and formerly a LinkedIn executive, is taking on Shum's responsibilities in addition to his own. It's not clear what Shum will do next. Shum has been a figurehead in the more integrated approach to research that has taken hold at Microsoft during the tenure of CEO Satya Nadella, who replaced Steve Ballmer in 2014. His group has been one of the most prominent technology research institutions outside academia, alongside the likes of Google parent-company Alphabet and Facebook.

Volvo creates new business unit for autonomous truck solutions

#artificialintelligence

Volvo has created a new business unit for its growing range of autonomous transport solutions. The new business area, Volvo Autonomous Solutions, will accelerate the development, commercialization and sales of autonomous transport solutions. Volvo says this will enable the company to meet "a growing demand" and to offer "the best possible solutions" to customers in such segments as mining, ports and transport between logistics centers, as a complement to today's products and services. With global developments that are characterized by higher demand for transportation, increasingly congested roads and major environmental challenges, the industry needs to provide transport solutions that are safer, have a lower environmental impact and are more efficient. Autonomous transport solutions, based on self-driving and connectivity technologies are well-suited for applications where there is a need to move large volumes of goods and material on pre-defined routes, in repetitive flows.

Using Machine Learning To Find Employees Who Can Scale With Your Business 7wData

#artificialintelligence

Hiring managers in search of qualified job candidates who can scale with and contribute to their growing businesses are facing a crisis today. They're not finding the right or in many cases, any candidates at all using resumes alone, Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) or online job recruitment sites designed for employers' convenience first and candidates last. These outmoded approaches to recruiting aren't designed to find those candidates with the strongest capabilities. Add to this dynamic the fact that machine learning is making resumes obsolete by enabling employers to find candidates with precisely the right balance of capabilities needed and its unbiased data-driven approach selecting candidates works. Resumes, job recruitment sites and ATS platforms force hiring managers to bet on the probability they make a great hire instead of being completely certain they are by basing their decisions on solid data.

The Rise of Inclusive Design

#artificialintelligence

Make the world work for 100% of humanity, in the shortest possible time, through spontaneous cooperation without ecological offense or disadvantage of anyone. As a design leader, keeping one foot in the present and the other an optimistic future is all in a typical day. However, a little over a year ago, the universe decided to kick one of those feet out from under me and present me with an opportunity to experience life with a physical impairment. For the next three months, that injury left me wheelchair bound and gave me an opportunity to pivot my design from adoption, conversion and retention of users to accessibility and the rapid shift to Inclusive Design. According to the CDC, 1 in 4 US adults live with a disability.

#Feature: Ice: The Ninth Novel In The Pseudoverse Series By CG Blade!

#artificialintelligence

Hey Everyone!! My friend, Karen Mossman, would like to tell you about a book she's really excited about. Humanity is living a dream existence side-by-side their new artificial intelligence counterparts, Robokopias, which look, act, and talk like anyone or anybody you choose. Only the Pseudosynths remember the time shift to set the planet on the correct course in 2075 and the warning that went along with it before the Robokopias were produced. Why is this warning so important? In Ice, if you or one of your family members die, it is your choice is to have your thoughts and memories transferred into one of these'Robokopias' so you can continue to live.

How Artificial Intelligence is transforming logistics sector

#artificialintelligence

The Logistics sector has always been one of the most growing sectors and a laggard in the adoption of technology. But the advent of latest technologies like IoT, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML) have set this sector on a path, which is soon going to not just transform the sector but also will give rise to a whole new breed of paradigms. Now, as the demand for logistics companies is growing, the driver's safety has become a primary concern. With the apps like fleet management system (FMS), it is possible to observe driver's behaviour in real-time and make a training plan which can also solve the issue of employee's long driving hours and breaks between drives with fully automated fleets. The availability of sensors and Bluetooth wireless technologies in the trucks have made it easier to add trucks to this burgeoning online network of supply chain data, providing last-mile visibility that was previously unattainable.

Japan's health care sector still a magnet for Filipinos

The Japan Times

MANILA โ€“ Job opportunities in Japan's health industry continue to attract Filipinos a decade since it started accepting candidate nurses and caregivers under a bilateral economic agreement. Earlier this month, a new group of Filipino health workers who aspire to work as nurses and caregivers here began preparatory training in the Japanese language and culture in two centers in Manila. The 341 applicants comprise the 12th batch of candidate nurses and caregivers under the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement forged in 2008. Japan accepted the first batch of Filipino health workers in 2009. And I think I will broaden my experience and learn more there.

Data science could help Californians battle future wildfires -- GCN

#artificialintelligence

A major wildfire spread through Colorado, and I spent long hours locating shelters, identifying evacuation routes and piecing together satellite imagery. As the Fourmile Canyon Fire devastated areas to the west of Boulder, ultimately destroying 169 homes and causing US$217 million in damage, my biggest concerns were ensuring that people could safely evacuate and first responders had the best chance of keeping the fire at bay. I spent it sitting comfortably in my home in Bloomington, Indiana, a thousand miles away from the action. I was a volunteer, trying to help fire victims. I had created a webpage to aggregate data about the fire, including the location of shelters and the latest predictions of fire spread. I shared it on Twitter in the hope that someone would find it useful; according to the usage statistics, over 40,000 people did.

Apple Card controversy: Artificial intelligence learned its gender bias from Silicon Valley, tech expert says

#artificialintelligence

Catalyst president and CEO Lorraine Hariton, who works with Fortune 500 companies to eliminate bias in their technology and systems, gives her thoughts on the controversy surrounding gender and the new Apple Card's algorithm. She says artificial intelligence can become biased if leaders and teams aren't diverse and inclusive. The Apple Card gender bias allegation is a lesson for Silicon Valley, which has suffered from sexism issues for a long time, according to one tech expert. Apple made headlines Sunday when the artificial intelligence algorithm behind its new Apple Card, in partnership with Goldman Sachs, was accused of gender discrimination after Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and another male tech entrepreneur said they got much higher lines of credit for their card applications than their wives did. Catalyst president and CEO Lorraine Hariton, who works with Fortune 500 companies to eliminate bias in technology and systems, joined FOX Business' Liz Claman on Friday and said she was not surprised by the accusation.
