Massive Drone Race Held Inside Baltimore Convention Center

#artificialintelligence

Well, you missed out if you were not at a massive drone race inside the Baltimore Convention Center. Lockheed Martin brought together engineers and technologists for the race, part of the Drone Racing League and the Global Professional Drone Racing Circuit. They barreled through an obstacle course and were all equipped with artificial intelligence, meaning, they raced without GPS or human operation. The winning teams in four events receive a $1 million cash prize.

When not to use machine learning?

#artificialintelligence

When you are solving a problem, in what circumstances will you apply machine learning? Is it true that in every circumstance, machine learning will always outperform rules and heuristic approaches? Before I graduated from university, I am fascinated by how machine learning models could potentially solve any problems in the world. Whenever I am facing any kind of problem, I will first think of how this could be solved by using a machine learning approach. For instance, when I was searching for a property to rent in Singapore, I would like to know the price range of one particular area.

Initiative to promote responsible AI use in finance sector

#artificialintelligence

A new initiative is under way to help financial institutions promote the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics. Veritas, as the initiative is called, will allow institutions to evaluate their AI-and data analytics-driven solutions against the principles of fairness, ethics, accountability and transparency. These principles were devised by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and the financial industry last year. Veritas aims to provide financial institutions with a verifiable way to incorporate the principles into their AI and data analytics solutions. It will comprise open source tools that can be applied to different business lines, such as retail banking and corporate finance, and in different markets.

A new take on reskilling: it's about the collective, not the individual

#artificialintelligence

IBM began working on its Watson supercomputer then as well. It seems like it's been ages, but these major innovations only happened 12 years ago. And the speed of technological change has only gotten faster, especially with breakthroughs in artificial intelligence (AI). As AI and other digital technologies permeate our workplaces and business practices, employees now have to acquire new skills and evolve just as quickly to keep up with the pace of change. What we find across many enterprises, however, is a growing talent gap, where people want to learn the latest necessary skills, but not enough companies are providing the right reskilling options.

To avoid bias, AI needs to 'explain' itself

Can a credit card be sexist? It's not a question most people would have thought about before this week, but on Monday, state regulators in New York announced an investigation into claims of gender discrimination by Apple Card. The algorithms Apple Card used to set credit limits are, it has been reported, inherently biased against women. Tech entrepreneur David Heinemeier Hansson (@DHH) claimed that the card offered him 20 times more credit than his wife, even though she had the better credit score, while Apple's own co-founder Steve Wozniak went to Twitter with a similar story, despite he and his wife sharing bank accounts and assets. Goldman Sachs, the New York bank that backs the Apple Card, released a statement rejecting this assertion, saying that when it comes to assessing credit, they "have not and will not make decisions based on gender."

Steve Wozniak Shares Perspectives On Technology, AI and Innovation

#artificialintelligence

While optimistic about the future, Steve Wozniak is not ready to turn over his identity (nor his Tesla) to artificial intelligence anytime soon. He deleted his Facebook account because of privacy concerns, and he no longer believes that a totally autonomous car will happen in his lifetime. But Wozniak retains the passion and enthusiasm for technology and innovation that made him a household name as Apple's co-founder. When he and Steve Jobs started Apple, they were trying to develop a new kind of computer that would improve the user experience beyond what was available at the time. Today, "The Woz" is a brilliant engineer, who keeps his eye on what is happening in technology, digital transformation and entrepreneurship.

Are our financial lives set by biased algorithms?

#artificialintelligence

Jamie Heinemeier Hansson had a better credit score than her husband, tech entrepreneur David. They have equal shares in their property and file joint tax returns. Yet David was given permission to borrow 20 times the amount on his Apple Card than his wife was granted. The situation was far from unique. Even Apple's co-founder Steve Wozniak tweeted that the same thing happened to him and his wife despite having no separate bank accounts or separate assets.

The European Mobility Startup Landscape

#artificialintelligence

It's an exciting time to be investing in mobility startups. Below are the current trends in the mobility industry and an overview of the startup ecosystem in Europe. The mobility industry is undergoing rapid change these days. While they bring opportunities for newcomers, they create challenges for the incumbents. Let's have a look at the four trends in more detail: While Mercedes Benz had already started to experiment with self-driving technology three decades ago, it wasn't until recently that autonomous driving (AD) efforts really speed up.

Artificial Intelligence used to Protect Passport Data at Singapore Travel Firm

#artificialintelligence

Darktrace, the world's leading cyber AI company, announced today that travel company, Global Travel, a Singapore Top 500 Enterprise, has deployed artificial intelligence to protect confidential traveler information, including passport data. With more than 40 years of experience in corporate and leisure travel, Global Travel's reputation in Singapore is well-established. The company takes cybersecurity seriously in light of the numerous cyber-attacks wielded on organisations all over the world, where cyber-criminals look to steal or compromise personal information. While the company complies with Singaporean data privacy regulations under the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA), Global Travel selected Darktrace to dramatically strengthen its security posture. It relies on Darktrace's world-leading cyber AI to not only monitor its digital systems 24/7, but also to act on its behalf when the AI spots malicious activity occurring. This'machine fights back' capability is known in the industry as'Autonomous Response', and enables computer-speed attacks to be quelled in a matter of seconds.
