Recently, Hisham Daoud and Magdy Bayoumi of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette have introduced a completely new Artificial Intelligence (AI) system that predicts epilepsy seizures. According to the World Health Organization's reports, around 50 million people around the world are suffering from epilepsy and 70% of those patients can control the seizures through medications. The new AI technology shows 99.6% accurate results, and the best thing about it is that it predicts the attacks an hour before it happens. In this way, the patient can gear up for it and take medications that can prevent its occurrence. Having enough time to control the attack is what a patient needs.

Deep Learning Has Hit a Wall, Intel's Rao Says
The rapid growth in the size of neural networks is outpacing the ability of hardware to keep up, said Naveen Rao, vice president and general manager of Intel's AI Products Group, at the company's AI Summit yesterday. Solving the problem will require rethinking how processing, network, and memory work together, he said. "Over the last 20 years we've gotten a lot better at storing data," Rao said during a one-hour presentation at Intel's AI Summit 2019 in San Francisco Tuesday. "We have bigger data sets than ever before. Moore's Law has led to much greater compute capability in a single place. And that allowed us to build better and biggerโฆneural network models. This is kind of a virtuous cycle and it's opened up new capabilities."
Facebook's DeepFovea AI promises power-efficient VR foveated rendering
Foveated rendering addresses a growing challenge for VR headsets, rendering sharp details for your eye's visual sweet spot -- the fovea -- and a simpler, blurrier version for your peripheral vision. Now engineers at Facebook Reality Labs have come up with DeepFovea, an AI-assisted alternative that creates "plausible peripheral video" rather than actually rendering accurate peripheral imagery. The new process is known as "foveated reconstruction," and Facebook says it achieves more than 14 times compression on RGB video with no significant degradation in user-perceived quality. When capturing a video stream, DeepFovea samples only 10% of the pixels in each video frame, focusing largely but not exclusively on the area where the user's eye is focused, represented by the lizard head above. By comparison, the peripheral area is sampled only by scattered dots that become less dense further from the eye's focus area.

Salesforce wants to bring voice to the workplace โ TechCrunch
At its annual Dreamforce mega-conference in San Francisco, Salesforce today introduced the next steps in its Einstein Voice project, which it first announced last year. Einstein Voice is the company's AI voice assistant. You can think of it as Salesforce's Alexa or Google Assistant, but with a more focused mission. During a briefing ahead of the event, Salesforce Chief Product Officer Bret Taylor showed off an Einstein and Alexa enabled Einstein speaker (Salesforce chairman and co-CEO Marc Benioff was supposed to be at the meeting, too, but for unknown reasons, he didn't show) -- and yes, it looked like Salesforce's Einstein cartoon figure and its voluminous white hair lit up when it responded to queries. The company isn't planning on making these devices available to the public, but it does show off the work the company has done with Amazon to integrate the service (though is by no means an Amazon -exclusive since the company is also working to bring Einstein to Google devices).
Headstart raises $7 million for AI that tackles recruitment bias
Headstart, a platform that leverages data science to help companies reduce unconscious bias in the hiring process, has raised $7 million in a seed round of funding led by AI-focused Silicon Valley VC firm FoundersX, with participation from Founders Factory. Launched out of London in 2017, Headstart is one of a growing number of startups promising to help companies increase their diversity during recruitment drives. This is achieved through combining machine learning with myriad data sources to find the best candidates based on specific objective criteria. "The machine -- the algorithms and models -- does this without emotion; fatigue; or overt subjective, conscious, or subconscious opinion or feeling. Unlike a human," Headstart cofounder and chair Nicholas Shekerdemian told VentureBeat.
