Massachusetts police have been quietly testing a robot dog

#artificialintelligence

Boston Dynamics has been looking for ways to put its robots to work, but it turns out they've already seen some service. Radio station WBUR and the ACLU have learned that the Massachusetts State Police bomb squad leased Boston Dynamics' Spot robot between August and November. While the document didn't elaborate on the role the bot would serve, a spokesperson said it was used as a "mobile remote observation device" to keep watch over suspicious devices and dangerous locations. The machine saw use in two real-world incidents in addition to training, the police said. It's not clear how autonomous Spot was, but the police said they didn't customize the robot canine's software or weaponize it.

Xconomy: Five Questions With a16z's Vijay Pande on AI and Making New Drugs

#artificialintelligence

In startup world these days, the word "biotech" is increasingly accompanied by "computational" and two, two-letter initialisms: AI and ML. Those tools--artificial intelligence and machine learning, respectively--have been around for decades, but in recent years have become faster and cheaper, accelerating their use by those in the business of discovering and developing new drugs. Another startup looking to take advantage of those improvements, South San Francisco-based Genesis Therapeutics, has scored $4.1 million in seed funding and publicly joined the growing fray of biotechs with grand ambitions of disrupting the slow, costly process of discovering and developing new medicines. Andreessen Horowitz, also known as a16z, led its seed round, one of a handful of seed-stage investments it has made in biotech. Felicis Ventures, another VC firm based in Silicon Valley, also invested.

Helping workers requires more than silver bullets

#artificialintelligence

This op-ed was originally published in Newsweek on November 20, 2019. At least to some extent in last Wednesday's Democratic debate, and more so in the earlier ones, candidates have offered soundbites touting crowd-pleasing "silver bullet" proposals to raise earnings and reduce inequality among US workers. To improve workers' skills, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren call for free college for all. To raise wages, many call for a rapid increase in the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour as well as resurgent unionism. And Andrew Yang continues to call for "universal basic income" in response to potentially large-scale job displacement from automation.

New Amazon tool helps machine learning models identify unique objects – TechCrunch

#artificialintelligence

Amazon announced a new capability today called Amazon Rekognition Custom Labels to help customers train machine learning models to understand a set of objects when there is a limited set of information. Typically, machine learning models have to work on large data sets to learn something like what's a picture of a dog, as opposed to some other animals. Amazon Rekognition Custom Labels can work with a limited data set to teach the algorithm a group of objects specific to a given use case. "Instead of having to train a model from scratch, which requires specialized machine learning expertise and millions of high-quality labeled images, customers can now use Amazon Rekognition Custom Labels to achieve state-of-the-art performance for their unique image analysis needs," the company wrote in a blog post announcing the new feature. For example, you may want to teach the model to identify a set of engine parts, a limited set of information, which has a lot of meaning to a specific use case.

Snapshot of artificial intelligence reveals challenges Stanford News

#artificialintelligence

As part of Stanford's ongoing 100-year study on artificial intelligence, known as the AI100, two workshops recently considered the issues of care technologies and predictive modeling to inform the future development of AI technologies. A Stanford-led artificial intelligence index called the AI100 periodically assesses the state of AI technology and makes predictions for the next century. "We are now seeing a particular emphasis on the humanities and how they interact with AI," said Russ Altman, Stanford professor of engineering and the faculty director of the AI100. The AI100 is project of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. After the first meeting of the AI100, the group planned to reconvene every five years to discuss the status of the AI industry.

How These 5 Startups Are Contributing To India's Clean Energy Goal 2022

#artificialintelligence

'We Care For The Planet' is what the Indian Government's first slide in their presentation regarding the initiatives they started on clean energy mentioned. Adhering to what the Government stated, India stands at #4 globally in wind power installed, #6 globally in solar power installed, and #5 globally in total renewable power installed. But, India, along with its renewable energy plans, intends to integrate Artificial Intelligence to speed up its clean energy initiative. Many tech companies are investing in cleantech startups to empower people in harnessing renewable energy through their AI-based services. It looks like India's vision for reaching the renewable energy capacity of 175GW is within reach.

But is bias the end-all of where AI and new technology will lead us while other writers note how AI infuses new forms of technology in human creativity in a world where chatbots are increasingly replacing an essential dimension of our culture: human interaction? While new tech is pommelled with various ways of evading human interaction, many consumers and businesses feel that tech need not do away entirely with offline interactions. Where companies like Starbucks are using AI more and more, there is great concern that new technology will replace human relationships. And many are responding to this concern by maintaining parts of their businesses within a real-life setting. Patrick Algrim, a human resources consultant at Algrim.co tells me, "Find where your candidates reside in terms of communities.

How Data Will Fuel Smart Cities

#artificialintelligence

Hudson Yards, a $25 billion urban complex on Manhattan's west side, is the city's most ambitious development since the rebuilding of the World Trade Center. When fully complete, the 28-acre site will include 16 towers of homes and offices, a hotel, a school, the highest outdoor observation deck in the Western Hemisphere, a performing arts center, Vessel and a shopping mall. Hudson Yards in New York and Sidewalk Labs' project in Toronto are test cases that will radically change the way our cities work through the use of data and the Internet of Things. As I discussed in a previous post, the Internet of Things has evolved to encompass a range of devices, from the smallest household appliance to self-driving cars. On a larger scale, smart city developments compound the benefits of IoT by collecting and analyzing data on usage patterns to create a reciprocal relationship between residents and their communities.
