AI in retail: Survival depends on getting smart

#artificialintelligence

The retail sector is the poster child for the use of artificial intelligence. Self-driving delivery robots, automated warehouses, intelligent chatbots, personalized recommendations, and deep supply chain analytics have been making significant impact on the bottom line -- if you're Amazon.com. Other retailers, however, are struggling to adapt. In fact, only 19 percent of large retailers in the U.S., UK, Canada and Europe have deployed AI and are using it in production, according to Gartner. Self-driving truck completes FIRST EVER cross-country trip from California to Pennsylvania

Daily Mail - Science & tech

A self-driving truck has completed the first cross-country commercial freight run. Plus.ai, announced its truck traveled 2,800 miles autonomously from California to Pennsylvania hauling a fully-loaded refrigerated trailer of perishable cargo. The vehicle is fitted with advanced autonomous driving system that utilizes multimodal sensor fusion, deep learning visual algorithms and simultaneous location and mapping (SLAM) technologies. The truck drove in autonomous mode across interstate 17 and interstate 70, while traveling through different terrains and weather conditions. Although a safety driver and engineer were on-board, this journey, according to Plus.ai, validates'the system's ability to safely handle a wide range of weather and road conditions.'

FBI warns hackers can use smart home devices to 'do a virtual drive-by of your digital life'

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Smart home devices are designed to make our lives easier, but they also make it easier for hackers to infiltrate our lives. The FBI has sent out a warning that'hackers can use those innocent devices to do a virtual drive-by of your digital life.' The US intelligence agency urges users to regularly change passwords, check for firmware updates and never have two devices on the same network. Digital assistants, smart watches, fitness trackers, home security devices, thermostats, refrigerators, and even light bulbs are all on the list of devices that can be infiltrated by cybercriminals. And if these devices, among other smart home technology, are not properly protected, they can be used by hackers to'do a virtual drive-by of your digital life.' Samsung are developing an interactive kitchen that includes a fridge, oven and TV.

Artificial Neural Networks are Reconstructing Human Thoughts in Realtime

#artificialintelligence

Earlier this year, researchers from Russia's Neurobotics Corporation and a team at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology worked out how to visualize human brain activity by mimicking images observed in real-time. This breakthrough in artificial neural network technology usage will eventually enable post-stroke rehabilitation devices that will be controlled by signals from the brain. The team uploaded their research via a'preprint' on the bioRxiv website and also shared a video that showcased their'mind-reading' device at work. To develop devices that can be controlled by the human and treatments for cognitive disorders or post-stroke rehabilitation, neurobiologists must have an understanding of how the brain encodes data and information. A critical development in the creation of these technologies is the ability to study brain activity using visual perception as a marker.

How I Got Started In Machine Learning

#artificialintelligence

My first look at Python was deliberate as I was following advice to learn the language from my mentor. Within a few hours of doing a deep dive into the language i got hooked and felt that the language was made for me. I made a decision that i would make Python my main language and put in all the work to understand it.My main resource when it came to Python Programming was Python's Documentation which i would advice any newbie to use. After months of intensive coding,I really good at Python that my friends and lecturers noticed, i familiarized myself with Python's frameworks;Django and Flask but i felt that this wasn't enough to make me a Python Guru.At this moment,I desperately needed to be good at Python. Oops,I stepped on Machine learningโ€ฆ. It was the beginning of a new semester,as part of our school curriculum we had to have project ideas for our third year.

Foxconn Upgrades Quality with Video Analytics

#artificialintelligence

Customized manufacturing is a major trend across all manufacturing verticals--from food and beverage to automotive. But the industry vertical that has likely been impacted most by this trend is electronics. Think about your electronics devices--from your computer to your tablet to your smartphone--and the various configurability options offered by the supplier. Now consider IT electronics, such as servers, and the amount of configurability offered by suppliers of these technologies to address various business demands. That's the level of complexity faced by Foxconn on its production lines in the company's Kutna Hora, Czech Republic, facility which produces HPE (Hewlett Packard Enterprise) IT systems.

AI meets CRM and BI: 15 Salesforce Einstein and Einstein Analytics announcements from Dreamforce 2019 ZDNet

#artificialintelligence

Nearly half of companies now say that they're using some form of artificial intelligence, according to McKinsey research that Salesforce shared at Dreamforce 2019, yet seven out of ten companies report they're seeing little to no value from their AI projects so far. This gap exists, Salesforce executives asserted, because too many companies are struggling to overcome data-management and data-science technical hurdles, so they have yet to put AI into production at scale. Salesforce's alternative is Einstein and Einstein Analytics, both of which offer prebuilt, CRM-embedded predictions and recommendations along with the ability to build AI apps and answer company-specific business questions without coding or data science expertise. There's no question that AI is of interest to organizations and that the Einstein and Einstein Analytics promise of pre-built capabilities and declarative, no-code/low-code app and model development is compelling. Yet Salesforce executives frankly acknowledged that Einstein and Einstein Analytics have only scratched the surface of potential adoption, with Sales Cloud use cases leading the way.
