Discover the state of play with artificial intelligence applications in the 'real world'

#artificialintelligence

Artificial Intelligence has been one of the most hyped technologies of the decade, with millions of articles, reports, blogs and conferences discussing the topic from every possible angle. But what's the state of artificial intelligence applications right now – especially when it comes to'real world' uses? While fully intelligent general AI remains a long way off, we have seen some impressive uses of machine learning, chatbots and even image recognition technology being released in the last couple of years. Much of the cutting-edge research is still at the academic level, but we have started to see artificial intelligence applications being launched by and used in narrower application in businesses. Let's look at some examples of how AI is being used in the'real world'.

CECIMO gets a new President

#artificialintelligence

The CECIMO General Assembly elected Dr Hans-Martin Schneeberger as President of CECIMO for a period of two years on 5 December 2019 in Brussels. His term will focus on the setting of global standards and the uptake of Artificial Intelligence. Succeeding in this role Dr Roland Feichtl, Dr Hans-Martin Schneeberger has been entrusted with the responsibility of leading the European Association that represents more than a third of the world machine tool (MT) production. In a highly competitive and uncertain global market, CECIMO and its members have to convey, to both the national and European institutions, the clear message that industry is vital for the future development of Europe. "The machine tool sector" he said "can contribute to the health of the European industry by shaping the next EU regulatory initiatives and policies".

Deep Inside the Mind of Media

#artificialintelligence

On Thursday 28th November HPE & NVIDIA hosted more than 50 people from across the Media sector to get to grips with the impact Artificial Intelligence will have. It was great to see such a large audience for the event and high levels of interest around AI. Throughout the afternoon we had an unprecedented number of questions across a broad variety of topics. It became clear that most of companies represented in the audience feel they are only at the beginning of their AI journey. However, with so much hype and promise around AI a lot of people are keen to get down to the nitty-gritty, which means asking the questions like; where are we with AI today and how can it help me? AI today can tackle two main areas; creation of content and analytics & indexation of existing content, with creation having the greater promise but being the more challenging to achieve.

Public opinion lessons for AI regulation

#artificialintelligence

An overwhelming majority of the American public believes that artificial intelligence (AI) should be carefully managed. Nevertheless, as the three case studies in this brief show, the public does not agree on the proper regulation of AI applications. Indeed, population-level support of an AI application may belie opposition by some subpopulations. Many AI applications, such as facial recognition technology, could cause disparate harm to already vulnerable subgroups, particularly ethnic minorities and low-income individuals. In addition, partisan divisions are likely to prevent government regulation of AI applications that could be used to influence electoral politics.
