The AI Overview - 30 Influential Presentations in 2019

#artificialintelligence

It feels as though 2019 has gone by in a flash, that said, it has been a year in which we have seen great advancement in AI application methods and technical discovery, paving the way for future development. We are incredibly grateful to have had the leading minds in AI & Deep Learning present their latest work at our summits in San Francisco, Boston, Montreal and more, so we thought we would share thirty of our highlight videos with you as we think everybody needs to see them!. We were delighted to be joined by Dawn at the Deep Reinforcement Learning Summit in June of 2019, presenting the latest industry research on Secure Deep Reinforcement Learning, covering both the lessons leant in the lead up to her presentation, current challenges faced for advancement, and the future direction of which her research is set to take. You can see Dawn's full presentation from June here. Reinforcement Learning is somewhat of a hotbed for research, this year alone we have seen several presentations that have broken down the ins and outs of RL, that said, Doina's talk just last month gave us some new angles on the latest algorithmic development.

DataRobot is acquiring Paxata to add data prep to machine learning platform – TechCrunch

#artificialintelligence

DataRobot, a company best known for creating automated machine learning models known as AutoML, announced today that it intends to acquire Paxata, a data prep platform startup. The companies did not reveal the purchase price. Paxata raised a total of $90 million before today's acquisition, according to the company. Up until now, DataRobot has concentrated mostly on the machine learning and data science aspect of the workflow -- building and testing the model, then putting it into production. The data prep was left to other vendors like Paxata, but DataRobot, which raised $206 million in September, saw an opportunity to fill in a gap in their platform with Paxata.

GreenWaves GAP9 IoT Application Processor Enables AI on Coin-cell Powered Devices

#artificialintelligence

GreenWaves Technologies GAP8 multi-core RISC-V microcontroller was introduced last year for artificial intelligence (AI) at the edge at ultra-low power consumption. The company has now expanded its GAP IoT application processor family with GAP9 that delivers five times lower power consumption compared to GAP8 microcontroller while enabling inference on neural networks 10 times larger. Greenwaves GAP9 will bring machine learning and signal processing capabilities to (coin cell) battery operated or energy harvesting devices such as IoT sensors in consumer and industrial markets, wearables, smart building, smart farming and so on. GAP9 is said to combine architectural enhancements with Global Foundries 22nm FDX process to achieve a peak cluster memory bandwidth of 41.6 GB/sec and up to 50 GOPS compute power while consuming only 50mW. The increased memory bandwidth (20x over GAP8) allows for greatly improved detection accuracy while analyzing streams of data from multiple different image sensors, microphones, and/or radar chips.

New AI can Reduce Risk of Suicide Among Youth NewsGram

#artificialintelligence

In a bid to help mitigate the risk of suicide especially among the homeless youth, a team of researchers at University of California (USC) has turned their focus towards Artificial Intelligence (AI). Phebe Vayanos, an associate director at USC's Center for Artificial Intelligence in Society (CAIS), and her team have been working over the last couple of years to design an algorithm capable of identifying who in a given real-life social group would be the best persons to be trained as "gatekeepers" capable of identifying warning signs of suicide and how to respond. "Our idea was to leverage real-life social network information to build a support network of strategically positioned individuals that can'watch-out' for their friends and refer them to help as needed," Vayanos said. Vayanos and study's lead author Aida Rahmattalabi investigated the potential of social connections such as friends, relatives and acquaintances to help mitigate the risk of suicide. "We want to ensure that a maximum number of people are being watched out for, taking into account resource limitations and uncertainties of open world deployment," Vayanos said.

Battleground over accountability for AI ZDNet

#artificialintelligence

There's little doubt that artificial intelligence (AI) is having a massive impact on IT budgets, operations, and user experiences. But an area of AI that is receiving increasing attention is ethics. As people and companies become more dependent on the use of algorithms to make and support decisions, the inherent biases of software developers and the data pools they depend on to build their models have come under close scrutiny. Machine learning, task automation and robotics are already widely used in business. These and other AI technologies are about to multiply, and we look at how organizations can best take advantage of them.

Anybody Aboard?

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence will soon be making a career in the maritime industry: Because specialist personnel and cargo space are scarce and transport costs are high, more and more ship owners are relying on ships with state-of-the-art assistance systems and autonomous driving functions. Autonomous ships will get by completely without captain and crew. When autonomous vessels plough through the waves in the future, the history of ghost ships will have to be rewritten. Legends like the Flying Dutchman and the Marie Celeste have one thing in common. Both vessels had a crew on board before fate befell them in the vastness of the oceans.

Artificial intelligence puts final notes on Beethoven's '10th Symphony' The Japan Times

#artificialintelligence

BERLIN – A few notes scribbled in a notebook are all that German composer Ludwig van Beethoven left of his 10th Symphony before his death in 1827. Now, a team of musicologists and programmers is racing to complete a version of the piece using artificial intelligence, ahead of the 250th anniversary of his birth next year. "The progress has been impressive, even if the computer still has a lot to learn," said Christine Siegert, head of archives at Beethoven House in the composer's hometown of Bonn. Siegert said she was "convinced" that Beethoven would have approved since he too was an innovator at the time, citing his compositions for the panharmonicon -- a type of organ that reproduces the sounds of wind and percussion instruments. And she insisted the work would not affect his legacy because it would never be regarded as part of his oeuvre. The final result of the project will be performed by a full orchestra on April 28 next year in Bonn, a centerpiece of celebrations for a composer who defined the romantic era of classical music.

World-class Performance with Assistance of Artificial Intelligence

#artificialintelligence

In the latest version of Ortoma Treatment Solution, OTS 4, Ortoma has introduced support of Artificial Intelligence. The system drastically reduces the time needed for pre-operatively planning of a hip implant in 3D, which has created a big interest for the company's unique solution. Performance has been a focus area during the development of the latest version of Ortoma Treatment Solution (OTS). With OTS 4, an automatic AI-analysis, which forms the basis for the pre-operative planning, is made. The analysis does not take more than about 30 seconds and includes a suggestion for suitable implant and its optimized position.
