When Robots Can Decide Whether You Live or Die

#artificialintelligence

Computers have gotten pretty good at making certain decisions for themselves. Automatic spam filters block most unwanted email. But can a machine ever be trusted to decide whether to kill a human being? It's a question taken up by the eighth episode of the Sleepwalkers podcast, which examines the AI revolution. Recent, rapid growth in the power of AI technology is causing some military experts to worry about a new generation of lethal weapons capable of independent and often opaque actions.

NVIDIA Details DRIVE AGX Orin: A Herculean Arm Automotive SoC For 2022

#artificialintelligence

While NVIDIA's SoC efforts haven't gone entirely to plan since the company first started on them over a decade ago, NVIDIA has been able to find a niche that works in the automotive field. Backing the company's powerful DRIVE hardware, these SoCs have become increasingly specialized as the DRIVE platform itself evolves to meet the needs of the slowly maturing market for the brains behind self-driving cars. And now, NVIDIA's family of automotive SoCs is growing once again, with the formal unveiling of the Orin SoC. First outlined as part of NVIDIA's DRIVE roadmap at GTC 2018, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang took the stage at GTC China this morning to properly introduce the chip that will be powering the next generation of the DRIVE platform. Officially dubbed the NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin, the new chip will eventually succeed NVIDIA's currently shipping Xavier SoC, which has been available for about the last year now.

ICLR 2020 Accepted Papers Announced

#artificialintelligence

The International Conference on Learning Representations ICLR 2020 is four months away but has already attracted more than its share of drama with a deluge of submissions and doubts about the qualifications of some reviewers. Yesterday the conference programme chairs finally put the selection process behind them, announcing 687 out of 2594 papers had made it to ICLR 2020 -- a 26.5 percent acceptance rate. ICLR 2020 will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from April 26 to 30. This will be the first trip to Africa for a major AI conference, a move long-encouraged by many leading AI researchers. All accepted papers will be presented as posters as usual, while 23 percent will have an oral presentation.

When machine learning packs an economic punch

#artificialintelligence

A new study co-authored by an MIT economist shows that improved translation software can significantly boost international trade online -- a notable case of machine learning having a clear impact on economic activity. The research finds that after eBay improved its automatic translation program in 2014, commerce shot up by 10.9 percent among pairs of countries where people could use the new system. To have it be so clear in such a short amount of time really says a lot about the power of this technology," says Erik Brynjolfsson, an MIT economist and co-author of a new paper detailing the results. To put the results in perspective, he adds, consider that physical distance is, by itself, also a significant barrier to global commerce. The 10.9 percent change generated by eBay's new translation software increases trade by the same amount as "making the world 26 percent smaller, in terms of its impact on the goods that we studied," he says. The paper, "Does Machine Translation Affect International Trade?

Ada Health cofounder on AI: Focus on solving problems, not technology

#artificialintelligence

Ada Health's combination of artificial intelligence and human doctors has made it a rising star in the emerging medical chatbot space. But the road to AI-augmented health care has been long and winding. "Eight years ago, when we started this company, nobody was talking about AI," said Dr. Claire Novorol, cofounder and chief medical officer at Berlin-based Ada. "We did not describe what we were doing as AI, even though it is a form of AI. We talked about medical reasoning. And so we were really building a system, an enormous medical knowledge base, and our reasoning engine that could support doctors in their decision-making."

Far-Right Outfit Uses A.I. to Power Its Propaganda

#artificialintelligence

The era of disinformation driven by artificial intelligence is here. For years, pundits have warned that the dawn of smarter software in the form of artificial intelligence would make it easier. Propaganda campaigns driven entirely by robotic trolls are still a long ways off but researchers at the disinformation-tracking firm found that a far-right media group used AI-generated profile pictures to build up a network of fake Facebook users and pages found in one of the largest troll takedowns in Facebook history. On Friday, Facebook pulled down a network of 700 pages with 55 million followers run by The Beauty of Life, a media outlet linked to the Epoch Media Group. Researchers at the disinformation-tracking groups Graphika and the Atlantic Council's Digital Forensic Research Lab found that "dozens" of the fake accounts found in the network taken down by Facebook had avatars that had been generated by AI software as part of a campaign Graphika dubbed Operation Fake Face Swarm.

Artificial intelligence identifies previously unknown features associated with cancer recurrence

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology developed by the RIKEN Center for Advanced Intelligence Project (AIP) in Japan has successfully found features in pathology images from human cancer patients, without annotation, that could be understood by human doctors. Further, the AI identified features relevant to cancer prognosis that were not previously noted by pathologists, leading to a higher accuracy of prostate cancer recurrence compared to pathologist-based diagnosis. Combining the predictions made by the AI with predictions by human pathologists led to an even greater accuracy. According to Yoichiro Yamamoto, the first author of the study published in Nature Communications, "This technology could contribute to personalized medicine by making highly accurate prediction of cancer recurrence possible by acquiring new knowledge from images. It could also contribute to understanding how AI can be used safely in medicine by helping to resolve the issue of AI being seen as a'black box.'"

Building a solid hosting infrastructure is key to gaming's future

#artificialintelligence

Through the decades, gaming has grown from a niche hobby for a select few to a massive worldwide community. The online gaming community is expected to top 56.8 million players by next year. The video game market is expected to make $152 billion worldwide in 2019 and online gaming contributes to $33.6 billion of these dollars; representing roughly one-third of the industry. The increasing popularity of online gaming makes it imperative for developers to offer smooth online experiences, and this demands a high-quality, thorough development cycle, consistent support, and listening to community feedback. Providing quality, memorable experiences to players through thoughtful development is important; after all, they did spend their hard-earned money on these games. To provide this, the backbone of gaming lies within the infrastructure each game is built around.
