Machine learning in UK finance - hype or reality?

#artificialintelligence

UK financial firms are increasingly using machine learning to help run their businesses, and are exploring ever more sophisticated techniques. Such innovation can improve financial services, but authorities must remain on top of the risks. Computer programmes can, with limited human intervention, recognise patterns from data and automatically make decisions. This is called machine learning (ML). Two thirds of UK banks, insurers and other financial services firms that we surveyed are already using ML to help run their businesses (Chart A).

Improving AI's ability to identify students who need help

#artificialintelligence

Multi-task learning is an approach in which one model is asked to perform multiple tasks. "In our case, we wanted the model to be able to predict whether a student would answer each question on a test correctly, based on the student's behavior while playing an educational game called Crystal Island," says Jonathan Rowe, co-author of a paper on the work and a research scientist in North Carolina State University's Center for Educational Informatics (CEI). "The standard approach for solving this problem looks only at overall test score, viewing the test as one task," Rowe says. "In the context of our multi-task learning framework, the model has 17 tasks -- because the test has 17 questions." The researchers had gameplay and testing data from 181 students.

Artificial Intelligence and Public Standards: report

#artificialintelligence

The Committee has today published its report and recommendations to government to ensure that high standards of conduct are upheld as technologically assisted decision making is adopted more widely across the public sector. Artificial intelligence โ€“ and in particular, machine learning โ€“ will transform the way public sector organisations make decisions and deliver public services. Adherence to high public standards will help fully realise the benefits of AI in public service delivery. By ensuring that AI is subject to appropriate safeguards and regulations, the public can have confidence that new technologies will be used in a way that upholds the Seven Principles of Public Life. We concluded that the Principles remain a valid guide for public sector practice as AI is deployed across government.

Ethical Opportunities for AI: Protecting Humans from Ourselves

#artificialintelligence

Aside from the immature design of many AI applications, another ethical pitfall presents itself in the way we are using these applications. We are designing AI for tasks that could (and should) be done by humans and neglecting to use AI where it is urgently needed -- namely, in repairing our online ecosystem. It is human nature to have opinions. Many of pride ourselves on the fact-based nature of our opinions -- whether they be based on news stories, personal experience, a book we read recently, etc. However, even the strongest opinions are subject to bias, and it is becoming easier than ever to bias our opinions through social media.

Artificial Intelligence and Public Standards: Committee publishes report

#artificialintelligence

The Committee on Standards in Public Life today published its report and recommendations to the Prime Minister to ensure that high standards of conduct are upheld as technologically assisted decision making is adopted more widely across the public sector. The Committee also published new polling on public attitudes to AI. "Honesty, integrity, objectivity, openness, leadership, selflessness and accountability were first outlined by Lord Nolan as the standards expected of all those who act on the public's behalf. "Artificial intelligence โ€“ and in particular, machine learning โ€“ will transform the way public sector organisations make decisions and deliver public services. Demonstrating high standards will help realise the huge potential benefits of AI in public service delivery. However, it is clear that the public need greater reassurance about the use of AI in the public sector.
