Guest speaker presents practical view of artificial intelligence

#artificialintelligence

And one such unknown today is artificial intelligence. Is it right to be afraid of AI? Or is this just an irrational fear of the unknown? To make artificial intelligence more understandable to its workforce, the Air Force Research Laboratory Materials and Manufacturing Directorate recently invited Dr. Erick Brethenoux to explain how it all works and how we all can expect to benefit from it in the future. Brethenoux specializes in machine learning, artificial intelligence and applied cognitive computing on the AI team at Gartner Inc., a consulting firm AFRL information technology uses for help with its mission-critical priorities. To begin his talk, Brethenoux reassured his audience that artificial intelligence doesn't really exist.

Teikametrics Raises $15 Million to Extend Its AI Multi-Channel Optimization

#artificialintelligence

Teikametrics, a leading SaaS provider of AI-powered optimization for brands and sellers on Amazon and Walmart, announced the completion of a $15 million strategic funding round backed by new and existing investors. The announcement follows Teikametrics' selection as one of Walmart's first exclusive advertising optimization partners, and the addition of Srinivas Guddanti, a 14-year senior Amazon veteran, as its Chief Product Officer. "We're thrilled to lead this new round of capital in Teikametrics" Jump Capital led the round and were joined by follow-on investments from Granite Point Capital, MIT Professor of Econometrics, Jerry Hausman, and the former Head of Growth at Facebook and Uber, Ed Baker. "We're thrilled to lead this new round of capital in Teikametrics," said Michael McMahon, founding partner of Jump Capital. "The Company has grown rapidly, and the success of its proprietary AI technology for Amazon is a strong proof point for a broader ecommerce platform opportunity. The partnership with Walmart is a landmark event and we are excited to fund the expansion of the Teikametrics platform across multiple ecommerce channels."

Mexico's Digital Revolution Gets a Push with Microsoft's $1.1B Investment

#artificialintelligence

Microsoft announced the investment plans for Mexico in an official press release. The announcement comes a month after Microsoft CEO Satya Nadela expressed his vision to "power broad economic growth through tech intensity" at Davos WEF 2020. He had said that Microsoft will ensure that this economic growth is inclusive. Mexico is now part of this inclusive global digital revolution. Mexico's digital revolution roadmap includes Microsoft's Cloud Services allocated from the local datacenters.

PhD Studentship on Artificial Intelligence for Railway Operations and Management Project Opportunities PhD

#artificialintelligence

Defining the roadmaps for Artificial Intelligence applications for railway operations and network management Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in innovative approaches in artificial intelligence for railway scheduling and operations, to be based in Institute for Transport Studies at University of Leeds. The position is an opportunity to combine cutting-edge research at the intersection of railway scheduling and artificial intelligence techniques such as machine learning, neural networks. The overall objective of the PhD research project is to investigate the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the rail sector and contribute to the definition of roadmaps for future research in operational intelligence and network management. In particular, the student will develop and compare different AI approaches, e.g. machine learning, deep and reinforcement learning, for railway traffic planning and management. He or she will have a chance to investigate using AI for solving combinatorial optimization problems, AI for supporting optimization models, with special focus on the optimization models for railway operations and management.

L&T to make use of artificial intelligence in streamlining operations

#artificialintelligence

CHENNAI: Construction major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is focussing on implementation of new age technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) in its operation to make it more smart and efficient, said S Anantha Sayana, chief digital officer, L&T. For the last four years, it has been working to bring in digital transformation in its operations and now it is focusing on deploying new age technologies like AI, internet of things in different verticals such as construction sites, safety and quality process management, and labour to bring in more affordable solutions. Sayana said over 11,000 equipments at their project sites have been equipped with latest technologies, which gives real time data and visibility. As digitalisation has tremendous benefit the company now aims to strengthen use of AI across its operation. "To ensure apt use of AI in different verticals, we need a strong database and we have created as rich storehouse of data bank from our systems. We have started deploying AI for prediction of machine life, quality check and many other sector but we plans to implement AI initiatives in analytic..." said Sayana.

Machine learning finds a novel antibiotic able to kill superbugs - STAT

#artificialintelligence

For decades, discovering novel antibiotics meant digging through the same patch of dirt. Biologists spent countless hours screening soil-dwelling microbes for properties known to kill harmful bacteria. But as superbugs resistant to existing antibiotics have spread widely, breakthroughs were becoming as rare as new places to dig. Now, artificial intelligence is giving scientists a reason to dramatically expand their search into databases of molecules that look nothing like existing antibiotics. A study published Thursday in the journal Cell describes how researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology used machine learning to identify a molecule that appears capable of countering some of the world's most formidable pathogens.

Are Your Algorithms Upholding Your Standards of Fairness?

#artificialintelligence

In the wake of recent high-profile AI bias scandals, companies have begun to realize that they need to rethink their AI strategy to include not just AI Fairness, but also Algorithmic Fairness more broadly as a fundamental tenet. At the Pragmatic Institute, we educate Fortune 500 companies about data science and AI. Through our work, we've discovered that many companies struggle to form a clear definition of algorithmic fairness for their organization. Without a clear definition, well-meaning fairness initiatives languish in the realm of good intentions and never arrive at meaningful impact. But defining fairness is not as easy as it may seem. Two examples highlight just how challenging this can be.

Deep learning AI discovers surprising new antibiotics

#artificialintelligence

Imagine you're a fossil hunter. You spend months in the heat of Arizona digging up bones only to find that what you've uncovered is from a previously discovered dinosaur. That's how the search for antibiotics has panned out recently. The relatively few antibiotic hunters out there keep finding the same types of antibiotics. With the rapid rise in drug resistance in many pathogens, new antibiotics are desperately needed.

Machine learning can't fix algorithmic bias. But humans can

#artificialintelligence

The fact that tech has a long way to go when it comes to its lack of diversity shouldn't be news to anyone at this point. The technology sector is the third biggest contributor to the US economy. And the people behind it--from founders to hiring managers to investors--overwhelmingly look like me: white men with a visible degree of affluence. Similarly, more than 90% of American venture capitalists are white men, and those white mend tend to fund startups led by people who also look like them. And as a result, men receive 35 times more funding than women.
