Chess champion Garry Kasparov who was replaced by AI says most US jobs are next
Garry Kasparov dominated chess until he was beaten by an IBM supercomputer called Deep Blue in 1997. The event made "man loses to computer" headlines the world over. Kasparov recently returned to the ballroom of the New York hotel where he was defeated for a debate with AI experts. Wired's Will Knight was there for a revealing interview with perhaps the greatest human chess player the world has ever known. "I was the first knowledge worker whose job was threatened by a machine," says Kasparov, something he foresees coming for us all.
AI system discovers powerful new antibiotic to tackle superbugs
Bacteria are evolving resistance to antibiotics much faster than new drugs can be developed, potentially leading us to a dangerous future where infections are more likely to be deadly. Now, an artificial intelligence model has identified a powerful new antibiotic called halicin, which cleared infections of most superbugs in mouse tests. Ever since antibiotics were invented in the early 20th century, we've been locked in an arms race with bacteria. Antibiotics work for a while, but eventually the bugs evolve resistance to those in wide use. Scientists develop new ones, so bacteria continue to evolve, and so on.
Artificial intelligence skills crucial for companies: Survey - Times of India
BENGALURU: Tech upskilling in areas like artificial intelligence (AI)/machine learning (ML), digital marketing and design thinking is crucial for boosting organisational performance, a survey by skilling platform Great Learning has found. The survey was conducted among 307 companies and 25% of all respondents believe equipping AI and machine learning skills is the goto skill for upgradation. In light of the growing digitisation of all aspects of business, digital marketing was seen as the second-most crucial tech skill required for companies to thrive in today's increasingly digital world. Around 19% respondents believe digital marketing skills are imperative for companies to grow. "The technology skill gap among employees is one of the biggest challenges that organisations in India are beset with. While it is encouraging to see that a majority of companies are aware of the need for upskilling, the time to act is now," Hari Krishnan Nair, co-founder of Great Learning, said.
AI identifies new antibiotic that can kill drug-resistant bacteria
Researchers in the US have used artificial intelligence (AI) to discover a powerful new type of antibiotic capable of killing drug-resistant bacteria. Scientists at MIT trained a machine learning algorithm to analyse the molecular structures of chemical compounds and pick out potential antibiotics. The deep learning model was designed to identify compounds capable of killing bacteria using different mechanisms to those of existing drugs. After analysing some 2,500 different molecules, the AI system identified a new antibiotic compound which, in lab tests, killed many of the world's most problematic disease-causing bacteria, including drug-resistant strains. The new antibiotic compound has been dubbed halicin, named after the the rogue AI system, Hal 9000, from 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Canada Is Becoming The Preferred AI Research Hub For Big Tech Companies
The Canadian artificial intelligence (AI) industry has been growing fast, and the country has been aiming for more through massive AI research. There are signs all over that Canada is already having an AI-driven digital economy as cities are emerging as hubs for AI labs and deep learning research. There is an increase in the number of AI startups in cities such as Montreal, Vancouver, and Toronto, among others. Canada has become a breeding ground for AI innovations. Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN), Intel Corp (NASDAQ: INTC), and Uber Technologies (NYSE: UBER) have invested significantly in AI research in the country.
Robodog 'Spot' designed to sniff out BOMBS goes into 'sit' mode
A robot dog named'Spot' designed to sniff out bombs went into'sit mode' and refused to move during a live trial by Massachusetts police. Spot was created by Boston Dynamics and was on loan to the bomb squad in 2019 when the failed test happened, according to a report by OneZero. The bomb squad were called to a Walmart in Westboro, Massachusetts after employees spotted a suspicious'old brown briefcase' on a bin in the car park. Officers decided to have Spot examine the briefcase but when they turned him on he went into'sit mode' and wouldn't move - even after multiple reboots. Massachusetts Police were eventually able to get Spot to walk over to the briefcase but the video quality he recorded'wasn't very good' and had to sent a human technician to remove the briefcase - it didn't have a bomb inside.
All about Machine Learning
In the previous article, we studied Artificial Intelligence, its functions, and its python implementations. In this article, we will be studying Machine Learning. One thing that I believe is that if we are able to correlate anything with us or our life, there are greater chances of understanding the concept. So I will try to explain everything by relating it to humans.
A Complete Guide To Data Science Career Path
India is rising and shining bright when it comes to adopting new and emerging technologies. Enterprises from almost all major industry verticals are hiring data science experts to help them garner actionable insights from big data. The analytics sector has witnessed a sharp increase in demand for highly-skilled professionals who understand both the business world as well as the tech world. Organisations today are on a constant lookout for such professionals who can fill this ever-growing dearth in talent. The stark reality, however, is that there is a lot of confusion regarding this profession among aspiring professionals.
Not all AI is alike
A few weeks ago at Davos, US executives warned that China may be winning the so-called AI race with Europe. In another recent article, Bloomberg pointed out that countries are rushing to not be left behind. The author also correctly pointed out that there's still a long way to go before AI will be commercially viable. In its vision for AI, launched last December, the European Commission has described its concerns with the position of AI in this race, which some have claimed Europe already lost. In my opinion, speaking of a'race' is both wrong and dangerous to begin with.
