AI and Public Standards Silicon UK Tech News
As AI – notably, Machine Learning continues to expand, government departments will increasingly use this technology to deliver advanced services to the public. In their recent report Committee on Standards in Public Life concluded: "Our message to government is that the UK's regulatory and governance framework for AI in the public sector remains a work in progress and deficiencies are notable. "The work of the Office for AI, the Alan Turing Institute, the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation (CDEI), and the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) are all commendable. But on the issues of transparency and data bias, in particular, there is an urgent need for practical guidance and enforceable regulation." In addition: "This review found that the Nolan Principles are strong, relevant, and do not need reformulating for AI. The Committee heard that they are principles of good governance that have stood, and continue to stand, the test of time.
How AI can bridge the gap between business and IT
Within an enterprise, connectedness means effective use of the Internet to improve operational efficiency, productivity, and leverage from systems. Outside the enterprise, connectivity leads to better customer experiences that customers cherish and value. Effective processes and seamless operations within an enterprise reflect outside in the form of a wholesome experience and service delivered to customers in a timely fashion. Business leaders need revenue and higher operating profits, while IT departments look for a better infrastructure to run applications on. Both of these intents meet to deliver a superior CX that enhances a business' bottom line and differentiates it from the competition.
Could a new technology powered by AI help protect Britain from floods?
Flood-hit communities in Shropshire and Worcestershire were struggling to to recover this week after heavy rain caused the River Severn to breach emergency defences. Barriers were erected in side streets and police could be seen knocking on doors along the riverside to ensure that residents had left their homes. West Mercia Police Chief Superintendent Tom Harding said in a video posted on Twitter: "Potentially, we've got water that has started to come underneath the flood barriers and in areas it appears that it is buckling." The annual cost of river and tidal flooding in the UK is as high as £1.3bn, according to official estimates. Large storms can cause vast amounts of damage, with Storm Desmond in 2015 estimated to have cost £1.6bn.
The Unique Requirements and Considerations for AI in Robotics Emerj
Applying AI to the real world is much more difficult than applying it in digital ecosystems; this is what makes robotics use-cases in business so much more difficult than applications such as AI-enabled fraud detection. To elaborate on these differences, Emerj spoke with Dileep George, co-founder of AI company Vicarious, which has raised over $100 million in venture funding, for Kisaco Research's Brain Inspired Computing Congress 2020, which takes place April 21 – 22 in Milpitas, California. We spoke with Dileep about the unique requirements and considerations for adopting AI in robotics use-cases, as well as where AI-enabled robotics will play a role in business in the new decade. Brief Recognition: Prior to co-founding Vicarious, Dileep was co-founder and CTO of Numenta, a machine learning company, from 2005 – 2010. He holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford.
15 Effective Uses Of Virtual Reality For Businesses And Consumers
Virtual reality has burst onto the stage, and because of how well-supported it has become as a hardware solution, its practical applications--from enterprise training to video games--are expanding. VR is a powerful tool for a multitude of industries and even consumers. Real-time medical education through projects such as Immertec--in which physicians can aid and train, in real time, during an active surgery--is by far the most valuable use of VR that has real-world impact. But many other examples exist within healthcare, such as VR gamification of medical rehabilitation as done by Verapy and others. The future of medicine will be the ability to practice everywhere through VR. - José Morey, Liberty BioSecurity We are seeing some incredible uses for virtual reality in healthcare.
PostDoc Researcher - Graph Representation Learning and Explainable AI ai-jobs.net
Accenture Labs Dublin is looking for a Post-Doctoral researcher in the domain of Graph Representation Learning and Explainable AI. You will be in charge of designing interpretable machine learning models to infer knowledge from a graph of clinical, genomic, and behavioural data. Explanations will use a wide range of techniques, such as rules derived from the deep learning models, gradient-based attribution methods, or graph-based explanations based on network analysis. The length of the PostDoc is 3 years. You will join a multi-partner project whose goal is identifying factors that can cause development of new medical conditions, and worsen the quality of life of cancer survivors.
British Startup Graphcore Hits $2 Billion Valuation
Graphcore Ltd., the British semiconductor firm whose chips are used to run artificial intelligence programs, has raised $150 million, bringing its valuation to $1.95 billion. The company now has $300 million in cash, which it will use to invest in research and development and global expansion, Bristol, England-based Graphcore said in a statement on Tuesday. After it raised $200 million in 2018, Graphcore was approached by additional investors who wanted to put money into the company, Chief Executive Officer Nigel Toon said in an interview. While the company has no immediate plans for an initial public offering, several of its investors, such as Baillie Gifford, have experience investing in publicly traded technology companies and are the types of shareholders the company would try to target if it were to go public at some point in the future, Toon said. "Having this additional capital on hand allows us to accelerate our investment and allows us to be in a position to support the really large customers who we're building business with," Toon said.
The Top 10 Breakthrough Technologies For 2020
It's the time of year when the MIT Technology Review releases its biggest breakthrough technologies for the year. These are technologies that are expected to have widespread consequences for human life in the coming year. The impetus behind satellite mega-constellations is the goal to provide every corner of the planet with high-speed internet. Satellite mega-constellations are the solution to banish spotty Wi-Fi signals and cellular connections. While enabling global connectivity for nearly anyone on the planet, these satellite mega-constellations will also litter space and dramatically increase the number of satellites in orbit very quickly.
The hidden seismic symphony in earthquake signals
Few months go by without another devastating earthquake somewhere in the world reminding us how we all remain at the mercy of major seismic events that strike without warning. But a new branch of geophysics powered by machine learning is uncovering fresh insights into the earth's slipping faults that often trigger these catastrophic earthquakes. Machine learning, which often goes by the catchier moniker of artificial intelligence, has captured the public's imagination with its promises of fully autonomous cars and the approaching "singularity" when machines out-think people. The current state of the art, however, shows little signs of true intelligence, such as the ability to abstract the principles behind a given phenomenon. In image recognition, AI systems learn from rote memorization to identify objects and are, therefore, often fooled.
Data Science, Convolutional Neural Networks, and Machine Learning in the Cloud (Part 3 of 4)
This is Part 3 of a four-part series that breaks up a talk that I gave at the Toronto AI Meetup. In this video we go more in depth into an example of a common data science process, how convolutions work in convolutional neural networks, and finally how this can be done in the cloud using Azure Machine Learning.
