#artificialintelligence

FiveAI has raised $41 million in venture capital as the startup seeks to turn the self-driving research it has conducted into commercial products and services. The U.K.-based startup has created a technology stack to power autonomous vehicles. The company uses AI and machine learning that would let cars use simpler maps to navigate their surroundings. By reducing the complexity of the technological challenges, the company hopes to accelerate the deployment of autonomous vehicles. "This funding round is validation of the work we are doing and the role our technology is set to contribute to developing and assuring self-driving," said Stan Boland, FiveAI's CEO, in a statement. Artificial intelligence platform helps developers spend less time on unit tests, bug fixes, documentation

#artificialintelligence

Developers spend around half of their time on tasks other than coding, and French startup Ponicode is looking to change that with a little help from artificial intelligence. The company, which was founded in June 2019, has created a platform embedded with AI that learns from millions of lines of code. The Ponicode platform allows developers to write unit tests directly in the editor to help decrease the number of bugs at the production stage, according to Ponicode CEO and co-founder Patrick Joubert. Coding has not changed in the past 30 years and while developers might have more libraries and tools at their disposal, "In the end, the quality of our code still only depends on our personal judgment and experience," Joubert said. "Our goal is to help developers focus on what they like to do most: coding," he said.

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) is increasingly adopting the use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to throw up advanced technological solutions to internal security challenges. The Bengaluru-headquartered company may be known as a radar company, but its embrace of AI technologies is resulting in increasingly smaller but advanced inventions. During a recent interaction at Defexpo 2020 in Lucknow, the company showed DH its new Command Control System (CCS), which can track Persons of Interest (PoI) in public spaces such as airports and railway stations. "The CCS is more than a video monitoring system. Its AI system can determine anomalous behavior, identify persons of interest through their gestures or body language and even gauge their emotional state by scanning their faces," said a BEL officer.

Some areas short of Japanese-language teachers for foreign youth

The Japan Times

Some areas in Japan are struggling to secure enough public school staff to teach Japanese to children with foreign roots amid a recent surge in the number of such students in the country, a Kyodo News survey showed Wednesday. The city of Yokohama, Saitama Prefecture and Fukushima Prefecture began the academic years of 2018 and 2019 without enough Japanese-language teachers, with a deficit of 28 in public elementary and junior high schools, according to the survey of local education boards. The three authorities were short by 21, five, and two teachers respectively. Almost all vacancies were able to be filled by the middle of these school years, but the Fukushima education board was unable to fill one spot during the whole of the 2018 academic year. With the number of children without adequate Japanese-language skills on the rise, the education ministry formulated a standard in 2017 that requires schools to have one licensed Japanese-language teacher per 18 students with such needs, aiming to achieve the target gradually over the next 10 years.
