#artificialintelligence

Caixabank Research To date, technological change has been key to the economic and social development of the human race. Despite this, the technological revolution that we are currently experiencing, with artificial intelligence (AI) at the helm, is a source of not only wonder but also some misgivings. These misgivings may be due to the new nature of the technologies of the future and the disruptive effects they could have on our economy and society. At the same time, these new technologies could be key to the revival of economic growth that is faltering so much in our European environment. In this first article of the Dossier, we will go over the different channels through which technology can affect the economic environment.

A machine that mimics human sight

#artificialintelligence

A camera can be compared to the human eye in the sense that both can capture an image. While the camera can only store the image, the nerve network and brain cells that help the human eye see can recognise as well as reconstruct it. The human brain has the power to memorise, recollect and think but even advanced machines cannot think for themselves. Recent breakthroughs in research, however, may just have made possible a machine that can "see". Led by a scientist who calls Calcutta home, researchers at the University of Central Florida (UCF), US, devised a minute gadget that exhibited the ability to recollect and recognise human faces in a way that mimics human brain cells.

Google's DeepMind just shared AI-generated predictions about the coronavirus that could help researchers stem the global outbreak

#artificialintelligence

DeepMind, Google's AI unit, is joining the global effort learn more about COVID-19, as the disease's toll spreads rapidly throughout much of the world. The UK-based team just used DeepMind's new deep learning system to share its predictions about the protein structures of the coronavirus, which causes the disease. The system uses a machine-learning technique known as "free modelling" to help it predict protein structures when no similar structures of protein are available. Scientists around the world are racing to learn more about the new coronavirus that has swept through China and spread across 86 other countries, at last count. At least 288 people have died outside of mainland China, as of Thursday.

Voice assistants enable us to issue voice commands to our phones and even smart home devices. We can set alarms using our voice, search for a bookstore on Google, and even turn/off the sound system. Some of the most popular voice assistants include Apple's Siri, Google Assistant, Google Duplex, Amazon's Alexa, Samsung's Bixby, and Microsoft's Cortana. On the other hand, voice assistants recognize human speech using Natural Language Processing (NLP). The speech is then converted to numbers using machine language before a response is formulated and returned. Web services such as Email rely on machine learning algorithms to categorize messages into folders. This is an email filtering process that makes it easier for users to access the most important messages. In this case, the subject of the message is assessed and then the message is sent to the appropriate folder. An instance of this is the Gmail app that uses machine learning to arrange messages into folders such as primary, promotion, social.

Across the world, investing in AI innovations is on a steep rise. Artificial intelligence (AI) is indeed opening up the newer phases of technological advancements. Last year, riding the AI wave, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), across the country, came up with several AI initiatives -- from rolling out courses to launching R&Ds centres and Center of Excellences in various parts of the country. Although we have just stepped in the year 2020, IITians have already started to make headlines with their newer innovations for the year. In fact, Google has recently decided to start six artificial intelligence-based research projects in India by providing funds and computational resources, where two of the prominent IITs have agreed to participate -- IIT Delhi and IIT Madras.
