Oracle Announces Java 14

#artificialintelligence

Oracle announced the general availability of Java 14 (Oracle JDK 14). Java 14 continues Oracle's commitment to accelerate innovation by delivering new enhancements to enterprises and the developer community with a new feature release every six months. The latest Java Development Kit (JDK) delivers new features, including two new highly anticipated preview features โ€“ Pattern Matching for instanceof (JEP 305) and Records (JEP 359), as well as a second preview of Text Blocks (JEP 368). Additionally, the latest Java release adds Java language support for switch expressions, exposes new APIs for continuous monitoring of JDK Flight Recorder data, extends the availability of the low-latency Z Garbage Collector to macOS and Windows, and adds, in incubator modules, the packaging of self-contained Java applications and a new Foreign memory access API for safe, efficient access to memory outside of the Java heap. Recommended AI News: Spherix Incorporated Changing Name to AIkido Pharma Inc. to Reflect Increased Focus on AI and ML in Drug Development "Java 14 is further validation of the benefits of the six-month release cadence, giving developers access to features that they would otherwise be waiting years to get their hands on," said Georges Saab, vice president of development, Java Platform, Oracle.

Public Sector Innovation Conference: Chair's Blog

#artificialintelligence

Like'digital transformation', innovation is an over-used and under-examined term. This applies within business generally, but more especially within the public sector, where there are limits to the amount of disruption and risk that it is considered acceptable to carry within the public domain. Further, a range of questions arises when government'innovates'. These include building the culture and incentives for innovation; understanding what innovation in the digital era is actually about (clue: it's not simply about having a new idea); handling the public-private sector relationship differently; scaling innovations; and handling the politics that inevitably surround changes of almost any kind to public services. The opportunity to chair the second Public Sector Innovation Conference on 25 February was a great opportunity to reflect on these, and many of the other tensions and opportunities that surround ongoing modernisation of public services, and benefit from a really high-quality speaker lineup.

Why Truly Smart Future Tech Needs Radically New AI Chips - insideBIGDATA

#artificialintelligence

Much distance remains between today's AI hardware and the technologies needed to enable smart cities and autonomous vehicles (AVs) to function smoothly. To bring new innovations to reality, AI chipmakers must concentrate on honing the building-block technologies needed to enable the truly smart AV and IoT systems of the future. That means building processors efficient and compact enough to compute and interpret reams of data in real-time. To achieve maximum benefit, these processors must be embedded within the edge devices themselves. Improving performance and speed while keeping compute cost and power demands low is the central challenge.

Coronavirus: The role of tech from telemedicine to Star Trek-like devices

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

Police in China are using Robocop-style helmets embedded with AI to spot someone with a fever from 16 feet away. A restaurant in L.A. has been checking people's temperatures at the door with an infrared noncontact thermometer. And a hotel near Texas Medical Center in Houston just deployed germ-zapping robots to sanitize guest rooms and common areas. In the war against the spread of the coronavirus, tech gadgets and telemedicine services are getting fast-tracked to the front lines. It's been a whirlwind few months for Dr. Samir Qamar.

Apple announces new iPad Pro with lidar camera and refreshed MacBook Air

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

Apple quietly announced four new versions of its iPad Pro and an upgraded MacBook Air on Monday. Instead of hosting a glitzy showcasing event, Apple revealed the devices in a news release. Starting next week, the tech giant will ship its latest iPad Pro in two sizes. There is an 11-inch model that starts at $799 and a 12.9-inch model that starts at $999. There are cellular-service-enabled upgrades to each of those, ringing up at $949 and $1,149, respectively.

ยฃ2.5m trial of AI system to help patients at risk of lung failure

#artificialintelligence

Doctors are turning to artificial intelligence in a bid to boost survival rates for the sickest NHS patients. Researchers at Imperial College London are to trial a device at the Royal Brompton hospital, in Chelsea, that will aim to reduce the risk to patients on ventilators in intensive care units. Four in five ICU patients require ventilation to help them breathe but there is a danger of over-inflating the lungs, causing their condition to deteriorate and leading to fatal lung failure. About a quarter of ventilated patients already have acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) -- placing them at higher risk of effectively drowning. The ยฃ2.5 million study, funded by the EU's Horizon 2020 programme, will use software that controls the amount of air on a breath-by-breath basis -- and which can sound an alert if the patient's lungs start deteriorating.

Will the GDPR frustrate Europe's plans for AI?

#artificialintelligence

The European Commission says that the EU could become the most attractive, secure and dynamic data-agile economy in the world. The Commission's new data strategy is for the EU to seize new opportunities in digitised industry and business-to-business artificial intelligence (AI) applications. However, the Commission has scrupulously avoided the vital question of whether GDPR is an obstacle to the EU's plans to become an AI hub. The European Commission announced its new EU data strategy with the publication of two papers in February 2020. These were a white paper on AI and a communication entitled, "A European strategy for data". The Commission acknowledges that "the availability of data is essential for training artificial intelligence systems โ€ฆ without data, there is no AI."

This Website Is Using AI To Combat Political Bias

#artificialintelligence

The Bipartisan Press uses machine learning to assign webpages and texts a political bias score. Artificial intelligence can combat political bias. Yes, we all know that AI has had its own problems with bias in the past (and present). However, one news website is harnessing AI in the fight against overt political partisanship. And in an age when the world is becoming more politically polarised, its efforts couldn't be more timely.

Canon Medical's 3T MR System Receives FDA Clearance for Artificial Intelligence-Based Image Reconstruction Technology BioSpace

#artificialintelligence

WIRE)-- Canon Medical Systems USA, Inc. has received 510(k) clearance on its Advanced intelligent Clear-IQ Engine (AiCE) for the Vantage Galan 3T MR system, further expanding access to its new Deep Learning Reconstruction (DLR) technology. This technology, which is also available across a majority of Canon Medical's CT product portfolio, uses a deep learning algorithm to differentiate true MR signal from noise so that it can suppress noise while enhancing signal, forging a new frontier for MR image reconstruction. AiCE was trained using vast amounts of high-quality image data, and features a deep learning neural network that can reduce noise and boost signal to quickly deliver sharp, clear and distinct images, further opening doors for advancements in MR imaging. "AiCE utilizes a next generation approach to MR image reconstruction, further proving Canon Medical's leadership and commitment to innovation in diagnostic imaging," said Jonathan Furuyama, managing director, MR Business Unit, Canon Medical Systems USA, Inc. "With the expansion of this unique DLR method across modalities and into MR, we're elevating diagnostic imaging capabilities for our customers by bringing the power of AI to routine imaging to provide more possibilities in improving patient care than ever before." Canon Medical Systems USA, Inc., headquartered in Tustin, Calif., markets, sells, distributes and services radiology and cardiovascular systems, including CT, MR, ultrasound, X-ray and interventional X-ray equipment.
