DARPA Considers AI to Protect Electric Grid, Advance 5G – MeriTalk
As the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) continues exploring emerging technologies for the Department of Defense, it's considering the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) to tackle electric grid cybersecurity and get ahead of 5G deployment. "In the area of cyber operations, we have a program RADICS [Rapid Attack Detection, Isolation and Characterization Systems], which is designed to help recover critical portions of the power grid in the event of a full blackout caused by malware," Scherlis explained. The program partners with power companies, the National Guard, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Department of Energy to enable a "black start" recovery, a restart to the electric grid without external power, in the event of a cyberattack. Scherlis mentioned the program in context of AI, but the program is generally building new tech to accelerate recovery through improved situational awareness, network isolation, and the ability to adapt to changing cyber situations. "The idea of this program is how can we understand what is the state of affairs in the grid and incrementally restore service, purge the malware, and bring service back to the most critical assets and then stage that out beyond. They've done a number of field trials," Scherlis added.

Artificial intelligence promises to augment human capabilities and reshape companies, yet many organizations are finding that the results are falling far short of their expectations. This is frustrating but not surprising. Too often, companies try to implement AI without having a clear understanding of how the technology will interface with people.1 Over the past decade, we have done a number of studies to examine how companies use digital capabilities to become more competitive, including a recent study on human-machine collaboration in a cross-industry setting, where we sought to better understand the contexts in which organizations use particular digital systems.2 In this research, which included more than 20 case studies, we found that many organizations underestimated the value of teaming the predictive capabilities of algorithms with the expertise and intuitions of humans, especially in decision-framing.

SFI CRT-AI: Science Foundation Ireland Centre for Research Training in Artificial Intelligence
The SFI Centre for Research Training in Artficial Intelligence was established in March 2019 with funding of over €14 million from Science Foundation Ireland and an additional €3.3 million from indusry and the academic partners. It is Ireland's national centre for PhD-level training in AI and will train more than 120 PhDs across four cohorts, with an intake of 30 students per annum for the next four years. The centre brings together five of Ireland's seven universities and a team of almost 60 supervisors across the country. Google, MIT Partner on Visual Transfer Learning to Help Robots Learn to Grasp, Manipulate Objects
A team from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Google's artificial intelligence (AI) arm has found a way to use visual transfer learning to help robots grasp and manipulate objects more accurately. "We investigate whether existing pre-trained deep learning visual feature representations can improve the efficiency of learning robotic manipulation tasks, like grasping objects," write Google's Yen-Chen Lin and Andy Zeng of the research. "By studying how we can intelligently transfer neural network weights between vision models and affordance-based manipulation models, we can evaluate how different visual feature representations benefit the exploration process and enable robots to quickly acquire manipulation skills using different grippers. "We initialized our affordance-based manipulation models with backbones based on the ResNet-50 architecture and pre-trained on different vision tasks, including a classification model from ImageNet and a segmentation model from COCO. With different initialisations, the robot was then tasked with learning to grasp a diverse set of objects through trial and error.

Baricitinib is a drug typically prescribed to patients with aches and pains from rheumatoid arthritis. But it might also offer relief from something more. In recent weeks, researchers at London-based BenevolentAI have been exploring the use of existing drugs as treatments for Covid-19, the new strain of coronavirus that has had drastic repercussions on global markets and left thousands dead in its wake. Specifically, the British start-up has looked to artificial intelligence to crunch vast amounts of public data to find a drug that could be used to treat patients while a new vaccine is conjured. "Given the scale and rapid spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus… there is an immediate need for medicines that can help before a vaccine can be produced," BenevolentAI wrote in a paper in the Lancet, a medical journal.
