SoftBank shares tumble 10% after OneWeb files for bankruptcy
SoftBank Group Corp. fell as much as 10 percent after a provider of satellite-based internet service that it invested in filed for bankruptcy, ceding some gains from an unprecedented plan to sell assets and buy back shares. OneWeb made the filing late Friday U.S. time after raising about $3.3 billion in debt and equity financing from shareholders including SoftBank, Airbus SE and Qualcomm Inc. since its inception. At least $1 billion of that came from SoftBank, which said it first invested in December 2016 and declined to give a total amount. It is the latest blow to SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son, who last week unveiled a plan to raise $41 billion to buy back shares and slash debt. The announcement sent the shares soaring more than 50 percent in just a few days.
Australian-designed artificial intelligence set to aid diagnosis of coronavirus
Hospital staff around the world will be trained to identify people who have coronavirus using an Australian-developed artificial intelligence diagnosis tool. The technology, created by University of Sydney-affiliated start-up DetectED-X, was originally developed to improve the accuracy of breast cancer detection. But it has been quickly modified to detect COVID-19 using lung CT scans of patients from Italy and China. CEO and medical radiation expert Patrick Brennan said the technology would allow people interpreting lung scans to have each diagnosis reviewed for accuracy in real time. The computer can check the scan and the diagnosis to see if the reviewer has made a mistake.

Beyond Europe's AI Strategy: Global Governance for the Fourth Industrial Revolution Carolina Polito* On 19 February 2020, the European community welcomed the publication of three new documents that will drive the European Digital Agenda for the five years of the new von der Leyen's presidency. The documents are the European data strategy, the White Paper on Artificial Intelligence and the Report on Safety and Liability implications of AI, the Internet of Things and Robotics.[1] Together, these documents offer a comprehensive overview of European priorities for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The main objective underpinning the European data strategy, informed by the conviction that the value of data lies in its pooling and storage, is the creation of a single European data space in which information flows freely and safely. To accomplish this objective, the EU will establish mechanisms to improve how data is shared, including via common contractual obligations on presentation, so as to make it accessible across member states. Additionally, the EU has planned to allocate 2 billion euro in annual investments as an enabler for its overall data strategy.[2]

Roving security staff at Hongyuan Park, part of the Xixi Wetland preserve in Hangzhou in eastern China, now have the power to quickly detect the body temperature of all park visitors from a distance of up to 1 meter, thanks to "non-contact thermal augmented reality" smart glasses supplied by AI start-up Rokid Corp. The company said on Thursday that each smart glass user will be capable of checking the temperature of several hundred people within two minutes – a vast coverage and speed that would make even Superman proud – to eliminate queues at the park entrance.

University of Arizona researchers are collaborating on an autonomous technology project that could prove autonomous vehicles can improve traffic flow and decrease fuel consumption. The project aims to demonstrate for the first time in real traffic that using intelligent control of a small number of connected and automated vehicles can improve the energy efficiency of all the vehicles by reducing traffic congestion, said Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Professor Jonathan Sprinkle. "More and more passenger vehicles come with features that automate some driving tasks," Sprinkle said. "New advancements in machine learning are showing how small changes to those features can work to address societal-scale challenges, such as the amount of fuel spent while sitting in stop-and-go traffic during a daily commute." The project is being funded through a $3.5 million U.S. Department of Energy cooperative research project.
NTHU Researchers Develop AI App for Generating Catchy Ads
An NTHU interdisciplinary research team led by Associate Professor Wu Shan-hung of the Department of Computer Science, Associate Professor Liu Yi-wen of the Department of Electrical Engineering, and Chair Professor Chang Cheng-shang of the Institute of Communications Engineering has recently developed an automated system for the production of digital advertisements. Based on the information provided by the user, the system generates a variety of images and music, which can be fine-tuned to create the final product, thereby greatly reducing the time and cost of producing an advertisement.
