TinyBuild: Hello Neighbor indie game hits 30 million downloads
Indie game publisher and developer TinyBuild said that its Hello Neighbor cross-platform game has hit 30 million downloads. The Seattle-based company has also sold two million books based on the franchise. First launched in 2017, Hello Neighbor is now available on PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Android, and iOS. The success of the original horror video game was followed by both a prequel (Hello Neighbor: Hide and Seek) and a multiplayer spin-off (Secret Neighbor). The game's audience consists mainly of children eight years old to 16 years old, mainly in the U.S., China, Russia, Germany, France, and South America.

My friend Robert John, professor of computer science at the University of Nottingham, who has died of liver cancer aged 64, pioneered the use of "type-2 fuzzy sets" in computational intelligence, to establish ways of reasoning algorithmically about linguistic concepts that involve uncertainty – something humans are good at, but computers are not. In the 1990s, while Rob (as he was known to family, though called Bob by work colleagues) was working at De Montfort University, he became involved in research into solving a community transport scheduling problem using fuzzy logic. Working from the foundations laid by Prof Lotfi Zadeh, Rob, through his PhD in 2000 and subsequent work with Prof Jerry Mendel and others, developed the mathematical techniques to use type-2 fuzzy sets. Two papers on type-2 and interval type-2 that he wrote with Mendel are among the most frequently cited and influential in the world on the topic. Rob was a founder member in 1995 of the Centre for Computational Intelligence at De Montfort and led its growth through the 2000s, established his reputation in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' conferences and in journals on fuzzy logic, and was promoted over time to deputy dean.

In 1238, the medieval Spanish ruler Alfonso X of Castile published a tome called Libro de los Juegos, or The Book of Games. It consisted of 97 parchment pages, many with beautiful color illustrations, and contains the earliest descriptions of games such as chess, dice, and backgammon. Alfonso went on to classify games into three categories: games that are played on horseback, games played dismounted (such as fencing and wrestling), and games played seated. He divided this third category even further into games that rely on the brain, games of chance, and games that rely on both. In making these distinctions, Alfonso is the unofficial founder of a field of science known as ludology--the study of games, which has attracted much interest among mathematicians, computer scientists, sociologists, and others.
Google AI arrives in UK to request opening hours
Google's AI phone assistant Duplex is contacting businesses across the UK and asking them what their coronavirus business hours are. It is using the responses to update company listings shown on Google Search and Google Maps. The Duplex AI assistant can be used by people in the US and New Zealand to make restaurant bookings and other reservations. But those features are not yet coming to the UK. Google chief executive Sundar Pichai wrote in a blog post that Google was planning to start using Duplex "where possible" to contact businesses about opening times.
NASA seeks miniature scientific payload concepts for robotic Moon rover scouts – TechCrunch
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory is seeking ideas from the public around what kind of scientific equipment they could use to outfit tiny lunar rovers to help with Artemis and other Moon missions. The call, issued via crowdsourcing platform HeroX and called'Honey, I Shrunk the NASA Payload' in a very contemporary nod to a movie that came out 31 years ago, seeks payloads with maximum dimensions of no more than 4″ x 2″, or "similar in size to a new bar of soap." NASA wants to be able to perform the kind of science that has, in the past, required large launch vehicles, large orbiters and large launch vehicles, but with much greater frequency and at much lower costs than has been possible before. In order to pave the way for long-term lunar human presence and eventual habitation, NASA says it needs "practical and affordable ways to use lunar resources," in order to defray the costs of resupply missions – already an expensive undertaking when just traveling to the International Space Station in Earth's orbit, and astronomically more so when going as far afield as the Moon . The goal is for these to be pretty much immediately available for service, with the hope that they can be shipped out to the Moon over the course of the next one to four years.

An AI has predicted which areas of the UK will suffer spikes in coronavirus cases next by analyzing social media posts about COVID-19. These posts suggest that outbreaks will soon hit Manchester, Liverpool, Oxfordshire, Leeds, Northamptonshire, and Luton. The system was created by Dataminr, a risk detection tech firm with a track record of detecting where the virus will spread to next. It previously predicted outbreaks in London, Hertfordshire, Essex, and Kent, between 7-13 days before these areas had spikes in coronavirus cases. Seven days after the company published its predictions, all states had been hit hard by the pandemic seven days later.
