"Old school" vs. "new school" artificial intelligence
Prof. Jan Scholtes of the University of Maastricht and CSO at ZyLAB today presented a lecture at the Raad van State (the Dutch Council of State), entitled "Artificial Intelligence and Law". The lecture focuses on "Machine Learning" as the new search. The theme, also used in a series of four blogs, elaborates on the "Big Data and Data Science training" that Prof. Scholtes, together with Prof. van den Herik of the Leiden Center of Data Science (LDCS), provides to a group of 20 Dutch judges. In his lecture, Prof. Scholtes emphasizes the recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI). Especially compared to the first developments of AI almost 70 years ago, things are accelerating rapidly.
AI vs your career? What artificial intelligence will really do to the future of work ZDNet
Jill Watson has been a teaching assistant (TA) at the Georgia Institute of Technology for five years now, helping students day and night with all manner of course-related inquiries. But for all the hard work she has done, she still can't qualify for outstanding TA of the year. That's because Jill Watson, contrary to many students' belief, is not actually human. This ebook, based on the latest ZDNet / TechRepublic special feature, advises CXOs on how to approach AI and ML initiatives, figure out where the data science team fits in, and what algorithms to buy versus build. Created back in 2015 by Ashok Goel, professor of computer science and cognitive science at the Institute, Jill Watson is an artificial system based on IBM's Watson artificial intelligence software.
AI, robotics start-ups leverage tools to combat Covid-19
As India battles to contain the spread of coronavirus, artificial intelligence and technology start-ups in the country are leveraging their tools and solutions to help those in the frontline combat the crisis. Invento Robotics, a Bengaluru-based start-up, has been re-purposing its robots -- to screening and diagnostics robots -- to help doctors and healthcare workers from getting exposed to infected patients. The screening robot helps with data collection (name of the patient, symptoms exhibited) and validation (temperature checks) in a contactless manner. Those having a high body temperature, or exhibiting symptoms of the virus, or those whose family members have tested positive will be directed towards the diagnostics robot, which enables a video conversation with a doctor sitting in a remote location, and procures a prescription thereafter, for the patient. "We started the pilot with two robots this week in two hospitals and we have about 10 hospitals that are waiting for the robots," said CEO Balaji Viswanathan.
14 Incredible Artificial Intelligence Pioneers Everyone Should Know About
As you might expect, this year, many companies use artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning at the core of their business to deliver innovative products and service offerings. Anyone interested in AI should know about these 14 pioneering businesses.# This London-based company was founded in 2013 and operates under two business units: BenevolentTech's focus is to develop the artificial intelligence platform that will drive innovation by transforming the way scientists access and use the information available to them. BenevolentBio is the division that applies the tech to generate new ideas that will impact human health such as better medicines and research, insights and innovation for rare diseases. With a mission to make law free and understandable, Casetext leverages artificial intelligence technology to help legal researchers find the most relevant cases quickly.
Evidence of the 'most similar planet to Earth ever found' spotted in old data
A planet with a similar surface temperature and size to the Earth has been discovered 300 light years away orbiting in its star's habitable zone. Kepler-1649c was discovered hidden away in data collected from the Kepler space telescope two years after it was retired by NASA and in seven-year-old observations. It's been described as'the most similar planet to Earth ever found' in data from the Kepler space telescope observations by the Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence. The rocky planet is just 1.06 times larger than the Earth and gets about 75 per cent of the starlight from its star that the Earth receives from the Sun. Astronomers from the University of Texas found Kepler-1649c while looking through old observations from 2013 - they found a computer algorithm had misidentified it.
5 Ways AI Is Helping to Fight the Coronavirus - Robot News
Around the world, people from all walks of life are battling the coronavirus. The good news is that we are not alone. Artificial intelligence and robotics are playing a major role in keeping places clean and people safe. Below are a few ways AI is helping us overcome the dangerous virus. Alibaba claims to have a new AI-powered system that can detect the coronavirus with an accuracy of up to 96%.

Big video innovation is moving forward in 5G era ZTE
As a mature 5G application scenario, video will embrace more promising prospects in the future. With 5G networks, high-quality video content such as UHD, 4K, 8K, and 120-frame videos will become popular for consumers, and VR, AR, interactive video, and AI-based video content will be their next hot videos. Paid video content will also change in intelligent distribution mode such as advertising, and the use of big data and AI can make video content target the right audience, which will improve video revenues. As 5G is widely adopted, there will be more video applications such as 4K/8K videos, VR immersive experience, AR, ultra-low latency live broadcast, high-speed mobile video communication, mobile communication in a crowded environment, as well as multimedia and IoV. In the 5G era, UHD video and ultra-high speed will greatly meet people's daily video viewing needs.
How AI is finding drugs to treat coronavirus Sifted
"It still makes the hair stand up at the back of my neck, thinking about it," says Peter Richardson, vice president of pharmacology at BenevolentAI, describing the moment when he realised that baricitinib, a drug previously used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, could be an effective treatment for Covid-19. The team at BenevolentAI, a UK company that uses machine learning to aid drug discovery, had been searching through their database of all existing, approved drugs, searching for one that could be repurposed to treat the novel coronavirus. The whole process took just three days. "Most drug companies had been looking at antiviral drugs, but we approached it from the other end and looked at what processes used by the virus could be disrupted," says Richardson. Protein kinases -- enzymes that speed up chemical reactions in the body -- seemed a promising area to look into.
