Drone-to-door medicines trial takes flight in Ireland

BBC News - Technology

A drone company that had to abandon its fast-food delivery tests has partnered with Ireland's health authority to deliver prescriptions instead. Manna Aero is working with the Health Service Executive to deliver medicines and other essential supplies to vulnerable people in the small rural town of Moneygall. The company's trial uses autonomous drones made in Wales. And it is looking at the possibility of testing in the UK within weeks. The UK has already announced a test of drones to carry supplies to the Isle of Wight during the pandemic.

The effect of human mobility and control measures on the COVID-19 epidemic in China

Science

What sort of measures are required to contain the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome–coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)? The rich data from the Open COVID-19 Data Working Group include the dates when people first reported symptoms, not just a positive test date. Using these data and real-time travel data from the internet services company Baidu, Kraemer et al. found that mobility statistics offered a precise record of the spread of SARS-CoV-2 among the cities of China at the start of 2020. The frequency of introductions from Wuhan were predictive of the size of the epidemic sparked in other provinces. However, once the virus had escaped Wuhan, strict local control measures such as social isolation and hygiene, rather than long-distance travel restrictions, played the largest part in controlling SARS-CoV-2 spread.

Rise of the Machines: How Big Data is Changing More Than Just Portfolio Management

#artificialintelligence

For years now, the SEC has quietly advanced its data analytics so that the staff is better equipped to examine registrants and identifier outliers. Information from this analysis is used to direct risk-based examinations of registrants, including investment advisers. The Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations also uses data-rich tools such as the National Exam Analytics Tool (NEAT) to improve its review of areas such as trading. For policy-making efforts, the various SEC divisions rely on the Office of Data Science and the Division of Economic Research and Analysis, which collectively maintain the Quantitative Research Analytical Data Support (QRADS) program. The rule-making divisions can use the data to direct rulemaking or enhance analysis to make rules more effective (and litigation proof).

Automating the search for entirely new 'curiosity' algorithms

#artificialintelligence

Driven by an innate curiosity, children pick up new skills as they explore the world and learn from their experience. Computers, by contrast, often get stuck when thrown into new environments. To get around this, engineers have tried encoding simple forms of curiosity into their algorithms with the hope that an agent pushed to explore will learn about its environment more effectively. An agent with a child's curiosity might go from learning to pick up, manipulate, and throw objects to understanding the pull of gravity, a realization that could dramatically accelerate its ability to learn many other things. Engineers have discovered many ways of encoding curious exploration into machine learning algorithms. A research team at MIT wondered if a computer could do better, based on a long history of enlisting computers in the search for new algorithms.

Rensselaer Artificial Intelligence and Reasoning Laboratory

#artificialintelligence

The Rensselaer Artificial Intelligence and Reasoning (RAIR) Laboratory is located in the 3rd and 4th floor of the historic Winslow building. To reach the Winslow Building by GPS, search for'Winslow Building Troy NY'. Research and development in the RAIR Lab ranges across a number of applied projects, as well as across many of the fundamental questions AI raises (e.g., Are we machines ourselves? Everything is to a high degree unified by the fact that the formalisms, tools, techniques, systems, etc. that underlie the lab's R&D are invariably based on reasoning. Because of this, logic plays for us a central role (since, after all, logic is the science of reasoning), but reasoning can be implemented in many ways, and so to reach our goals we happily turn to, from among the RAIR Lab's many options, the computational reasoner that helps get the job.

Online app to visualize, interpret spatial data for forest planning and conservation

#artificialintelligence

The Intelligent GeoSolutions (IGS) team at the University of Maine's Center for Research on Sustainable Forests (CRSF) has released a free interactive mapping tool, the Forest Ecosystem Status a … Trends (ForEST) app, to provide online decision support to private and public forest managers, natural resource agencies, conservation organizations and other stakeholders. With the current outbreak of eastern spruce budworm expanding south from Quebec, up-to-date information about resource conditions and near-term risk are needed to coordinate mitigation actions in response to the outbreak and related market conditions. The ForEST app is the culmination of three years of research and software development by the IGS team in partnership with UMaine's Advanced Computing Group. The interdisciplinary project supported two graduate students in the School of Computing and Information Science, each of whom served as lead developer, as well as undergraduate computer science students who worked as team programmers. The interactive web interface is designed to provide near real-time information about changing forest landscape conditions resulting from the spruce budworm outbreak and ongoing management.

Google's AI-Powered Calling Service Duplex Is Now Available in More Countries -

#artificialintelligence

According to the Google support page, Google Duplex will now be available in the UK, Australia, and Canada. Moreover, VentureBeat & TheVerge Reports has discovered a new addition of phone numbers on the support page that Google has started to use when calling via Duplex from a distinct country. Google also elucidated that it's not a full rollout of the service and it is using Duplex mainly to contact businesses in these new countries so that business hours can be updated for Google Maps and Search. Even the CEO Sundar Pichai has highlighted this use of Google Duplex for business last month, as he mentioned in his blog that in the coming days, businesses will be able to easily mark themselves as'temporarily closed' just using Google My Business. Moreover, the core purpose of using this artificial intelligence (AI) technology Duplex is to make it possible to reach businesses to confirm their updated business hours and reflect them accurately when people look at Search and Maps.

Cnvrg.io launches a free version of its data science platform – TechCrunch

#artificialintelligence

Dubbed'CORE,' this version includes most -- but not all -- of the standard feature in cnvrg's main commercial offering. As the company's CEO Yochay Ettun told me, CORE users will be able to use the platform either on-premise or in the cloud, using Nvidia-optimized containers that run on a Kubernetes cluster. Because of this, it natively handles hybrid- and multi-cloud deployments that can automatically scale up and down as needed -- and adding new AI frameworks is simply a matter of spinning up new containers, all of which are managed from the platform's web-based dashboard. Ettun describes CORE as a'lightweight version' of the original platform but still hews closely to the platform's original mission. "As was our vision from the very start, cnvrg.io "With the growing technical complexity of the AI field, the data science community has strayed from the core of what makes data science such a captivating profession -- the algorithms.
