AI For National Security And The Challenge Of China

#artificialintelligence

This article has been adapted from the podcast, Eye on AI. In 2017, China announced its goal to become the world leader in AI by 2030. The US responded by creating a commission to review America's competitive position and to advise Congress on what steps are needed to maintain US leadership in this important field. Former Google chief executive Eric Schmidt and former Deputy Defense Secretary Bob Work were chosen from among fifteen appointed commissioners to lead the work. Earlier this month, the commission issued its first set of recommendations to Congress.

This week's best deals: Fitbit Inspire HR, the Apple Watch and more

Engadget

April ended and ushered in May with a number of deals on wearables, smartphones and smart home gadgets. Best Buy knocked the starting price of the Apple Watch Series 5 down by $100, and Android users can still grab a Samsung Galaxy Watch Active for only $120. It's also a good time to step up your spring-cleaning game as a couple of iRobot Roombas are still on sale. Here are the best deals we found this week that you can still get today. The Fitbit Inspire HR fitness tracker remains on sale for $70 at Walmart, Amazon and Fitbit's website. This sale slashes $30 off its normal price of $100 and makes it the same price as the regular Inspire tracker.

Amazon's 'Upload' explores the digital afterlife in a world gone to hell

Engadget

Take Black Mirror's dystopian tech commentary, The Good Place's philosophical exploration of the after-life, and the workplace antics of The Office, mash them together, and you have Amazon's Upload. It takes place in a world that could easily be 10 years from now -- self driving cars are commonplace, the Earth is polluted and over-crowded, and, oh yeah, you can also achieve digital immortality by uploading your consciousness to the cloud. Upload, which premieres today, is an entirely new territory for Greg Daniels, the genius writer behind The Office, and Parks and Rec (not to mention a long run on The Simpsons). But it's a world that's clearly been percolating in his mind for years. It's bold and raunchy in a way a network sitcom never could be, and it defies being classified into a single genre.

Online Dating Is Surprisingly Great Now--Because Men Actually Have to Have Conversations

Slate is making its coronavirus coverage free for all readers. Subscribe to support our journalism. I've been single for about two and a half years. Not unhappily so, but I keep a busy schedule that allows me time to go out and meet new people or to go on dates, but rarely both. Despite that, I've been able to maintain a rather pleasing love life, thanks in great part to the apps. Obviously, I haven't yet settled down with Mr. Right Enough just yet, but I've connected with great friends, met remarkable lovers, and explored both fleeting and long-term romance on my own terms.

The cover image is adapted from Figure 4 in the article, "Harnessing Population Pedigree Data and Machine Learning Methods to Identify Patterns of Familial Bladder Cancer Risk," by Hanson and colleagues. To simultaneously assess risks for multiple cancers to identify distinct multicancer configurations, this study takes advantage of a unique population-level data resource, the Utah Population Database, containing vast genealogy and statewide cancer data. This study identified five familial bladder cancer FMCs showing unique risk patterns for cancers of other organs, suggesting phenotypic heterogeneity in familial bladder cancer. FMC configurations could permit better definitions of cancer phenotypes (subtypes or multicancer) for gene discovery and environmental risk factor studies. Researchers use artificial intelligence to make coronavirus predictions

#artificialintelligence

NYU Grossman School of Medicine and Columbia University led a team of American and Chinese scientists to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) techniques in a new prototype that will predict the severity of lasting effects from COVID-19. The researchers set out to demonstrate the effectiveness of artificial intelligence techniques in predicting which patients infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, would later develop potentially fatal acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The small-scale study consisted of 53 consecutive patients, 33 men, and 20 women, infected with SARS-CoV-2 who went to Wenzhou Central Hospital or Wuhan Central Hospital for treatment in January 2020. The median age was 43 years old. Mild symptoms at onset included cough, fever, stomach upset, myalgia, wheezing, dyspnea, nasal congestion, and sore throat.
