Fireflies helps companies get more out of meetings
Many decisions are made and details sorted out in a productive business meeting. But in order for that meeting to translate into results, participants have to remember all those details, understand their assignments, and follow through on commitments. The startup Fireflies.ai is helping people get the most out of their meetings with a note-taking, information-organizing virtual assistant named Fred. Fred transcribes every word of meetings and then uses artificial intelligence to help people sort and share that information later on. "There's a tremendous amount of data generated in meetings that can help your team stay on the same page," says Sam Udotong '16, who founded the company with Krish Ramineni in 2016.
Why Cortana won't be at Microsoft Build
You're not going to hear anything about Cortana this week at Microsoft's Build conference. Microsoft Cortana has moved from becoming the flagship feature at the Windows 10 launch to something of a has-been. And yet the intelligence that powers her is something that's become a priority for Microsoft, creating the impression that there's Cortana, and then there's AI, and the two are separate and distinct. There's a similar gap between the reason that Cortana is absent from Build, and separate underlying issues with Cortana itself. Put simply, it's a bit of a mess.
U.S. Orders Breakup of Exoskeleton Firm's Venture With Chinese Investors
WASHINGTON--A U.S. national security panel has ordered the breakup of a joint venture formed between Chinese investors and a California firm that makes exoskeletons, robotic devices that can help disabled people walk but can also help soldiers carry heavy loads. In an announcement Wednesday, Ekso Bionics Holdings Inc. said that panelists on the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S., which reviews deals that threaten the country's national security, are requiring the company to end its joint-venture with its Chinese business...
What computer-based models can tell us about coronavirus -- and what they can't
Ensemble modeling, meaning combining the predictions of many different models, it's a crucial tool that has greatly improved forecasting the weather and, in the past three years, seasonal influenza as well. Nick Reich is an associate professor of biostatistics at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, he leads a team that builds ensemble models to improve predictions of the spread of the flu.
Andrew Carr's review of The Road to Conscious Machines
Ironically or not, the best way to understand science is often through history. As Wooldridge relates early on, he planned this book as'the story of AI through failed ideas' - and in this he succeeds brilliantly in showing the fascinating and compelling slog towards Artificial Intelligence. This is an outstanding read. It is passionate about the technology, yet sceptical about its achievements. Wooldridge - Head of the Computer Science department at Oxford University - is humane in his judgements, yet clear and logical in his assessments. There's enough to get your teeth into, but little to scare away the general reader.
EasyJet admits it was aware of 'highly sophisticated cyber attack' that affected 9 million customers as early as January
Budget airline easyJet was aware of the data breach, which revealed personal information of nine million customers and the credit card information of over 2,200 customers, in January. News of the cyber attack broke yesterday, revealing that the attacker or attackers had access to the data of customers who booked flights from 17 October 2019 to 4 March 2020. In a statement, the airline said: "We're sorry that this has happened, and we would like to reassure customers that we take the safety and security of their information very seriously. "There is no evidence that any personal information of any nature has been misused." However, while there is no evidence the data was misused, that does not mean that it cannot be misused. Experts suggest that personal information "drives a higher price on the dark web" โ the area of the internet inaccessible by mainstream search engines โ and could be used for organised crime or ransomed. What does the easyJet data hack mean for you? What does the easyJet data hack mean for you? Two people with knowledge of the investigation have said that Chinese hackers are supposedly responsible for the hack based on similarities in hacking tools and techniques used in previous campaigns, but that has yet to be officially confirmed. In a statement, the Information Commissioners' Office (ICO) said: "We have a live investigation into the cyber attack involving easyJet.
Apple's Siri violated 'the privacy of millions,' says whistleblower
The whistleblower who exposed in 2019 that Apple contractors listened to users' Siri recordings without their knowledge or consent has gone public to protest the lack of action taken against the technology giant. In a letter, sent to all European data protection regulators, Thomas le Bonniec said that Apple had conducted a "massive violation of the privacy of millions of citizens." He wrote that although news of the case had already gone public, the technology giant "has not been subject to any kind of investigation to the best of my knowledge." Mr Le Bonniec, who was hired by one of Apple's subcontractors in Ireland called Globe Technical Services, had to listen to recordings from users and correct transcription errors. Listening to hundreds of recortings from Apple's iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches, many of them were taken "outside of any activation of Siri" โ meaning that users were not aware of the action.
Fast and Reproducible Deep Learning
There are endless resources for someone who wants to learn to train a deep learning model, but running a successful deep learning project requires managing many additional moving parts that are much less discussed. This talk contributes to filling that gap in our deep learning education resources. Deep learning projects require managing large datasets, heavy-duty dependencies, complex experiments, and large amounts of code. This talk provides best practices for accomplishing these tasks efficiently and reproducibly. Tools that are covered include the Creevey library for processing large collections of files; pip-tools and nvidia-docker for managing dependencies; and MLflow Tracking for tracking experiments.
