Deepfakes Are Going To Wreak Havoc On Society. We Are Not Prepared.
None of these people exist. These images were generated using deepfake technology. Last month during ESPN's hit documentary series The Last Dance, State Farm debuted a TV commercial that has become one of the most widely discussed ads in recent memory. It appeared to show footage from 1998 of an ESPN analyst making shockingly accurate predictions about the year 2020. As it turned out, the clip was not genuine: it was generated using cutting-edge AI.
With an AI push, IBM is looking at cognitive clouds
Early this month, IBM announced that it shall be rolling out an AIOps product at its Think Digital Conference. The product is expected to help CIOs plan better as IBM's flagship AI, Watson, caters to anomalies in the process and deals with outages. The company said that AIOps will be able to self-detect, diagnose and respond to IT anomalies in real-time. For instance, AI will be able to correct any anomalies in the operations. "Our work is centered around cognitive-AI driven enterprise planning," Gopal Pingali, global vice president of the Global Technology Services Labs, IBM, said.
Nuclear Fusion and Artificial Intelligence: the Dream of Limitless Energy
Ever since the 1930s when scientists, namely Hans Bethe, discovered that nuclear fusion was possible, researchers strived to initiate and control fusion reactions to produce useful energy on Earth. The best example of a fusion reaction is in the middle of stars like the Sun where hydrogen atoms are fused together to make helium releasing a lot of energy that powers the heat and light of the star. On Earth, scientists need to heat and control plasma, an ionised state of matter similar to gas, to cause particles to fuse and release their energy. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to start fusion reactions on Earth, as they require conditions similar to the Sun, very high temperature and pressure, and scientists have been trying to find a solution for decades. In May 2019, a workshop detailing how fusion could be advanced using machine learning was held that was jointly supported by the Department of Energy Offices of Fusion Energy Science (FES) and Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR).
Robots Walk Faster With Newly Developed Flexible Feet
Anthony is the co-founder and COO of Dexai Robotics, a startup that automates activities in commercial kitchens using flexible robot arms. Prior to Dexai, Anthony worked as a consultant with the Boston Consulting Group, focusing on growth strategies. Anthony holds a MBA from Harvard Business School, and a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering and a B.S. in Mathematics from the American University of Beirut. Outside of work, Anthony enjoys chasing soccer balls and exploring sunken sea treasures. What is it that attracted you to robotics initially?
Artificial intelligence detects COVID-19 for the first time in US
Researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai created the first algorithm of its kind in the United States to use artificial intelligence, combined with CT imaging of lungs and clinical data, to detect COVID-19, according to a press release. "We have a collaboration with different hospitals in China," Zahi Fayad, PhD, director of the BioMedical Engineering and Imaging Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, told Healio Primary Care. "We integrated some of their patients' CT data with clinical data to come up with a better diagnosis." The AI model -- dubbed convolutional neural network, or CNN, by researchers -- is based on CT scans and other clinical information such as abnormalities in white blood cell counts, age, gender and symptoms (fever, cough or cough with mucus) of 905 patients (mean age, 40.7 years; 488 men) admitted to 18 medical centers in 13 Chinese provinces between Jan. 17 and March 3, 2020. Among these cases, 419 confirmed were positive for COVID-19.
Diversify Your Portfolio With AI
Have you ever wondered why your stock portfolio isn't performing as well as a basic "stock market" ETF--or worse, your own expectations? That despite having the "right" stocks in your Robinhood account, your overall portfolio is not where it should be? There's a reason why this is happening and it's simple: buying a basket of stocks and calling it day just isn't enough. Determining how much of a stock to buy isn't as simple as a basic math equation. Why build your portfolio based on yesterday's stock market?
The ultimate root of AI stupidity
This is the second installment in a series. The ultimate root of the stupidity of AI systems, I argue, lies in their strictly algorithmic character. AI as presently understood is based on digital processing systems that carry out binary-numerical operations in a step-by-step fashion according to fixed sets of algorithms, starting from an array of numerical inputs. Some may object to this characterization, pointing out that AI systems can constantly change their own "rules" – reprogramming themselves, so to speak. That is true; but the self-reprogramming must follow some algorithm.
Top 10 Must Read Automation Stories Of 2019
Implementation of all new businesses focused on automation and giving us the latest. We have the Top Automation News shortlisted that you need to read to remain part of the Tech world. The currently existing systems for the people who are unable to speak can only read their eye or hand movements to decipher what they want to say. But no system is yet invented that can truly give a voice to them. This has changed as three research teams at Columbia University have made a system that collects data from neurons and converts this data into speech.
