Binhai Vows More Financial Support for Smart Manufacturing
It will also innovate financial support and expand credit to guide financial institutions' involvement in key projects featuring cutting-edge technology and broad market prospects. In 2019, the local government rolled out an action plan for accelerating the high quality growth of Binhai New Area, vowing that the area would become a world-class innovation center driven by intelligent manufacturing. With that goal in mind, Binhai joined hands with China Traffic Construction Group among others and launched a 30 billion yuan ($4.25 billion) fund to support the development of the intelligent technology industry. The fund was expected to facilitate cooperation among global intelligent engineering technology centers and Binhai's Sino-German Industry 4.0 intelligent manufacturing center, its integrated circuit center, automotive electronics and automated driving center, and intelligent transportation center. An industrial development fund was also established to support intelligent technology, biomedicine, new energy and new materials, aerospace, and equipment manufacturing.
Intel set to debut artificial intelligence degree program in Valley
Long known for its innovations in the development of artificial intelligence applications, Santa Barbara, California-based Intel Corp. is taking its AI game to a new level -- and metro Phoenix is ground zero. With plans to create a pipeline of AI talent, Intel is teaming with Arizona's largest community college system to design an AI associate's degree program -- making it the first Intel-designed AI associate degree program in the nation. Gregory Bryant, executive vice president and general manager of Intel's Client Computing Group, told the Business Journal a new partnership with Maricopa County Community College District will help prepare Arizona's workforce for future AI jobs. Intel has been in the metro Phoenix community for 40 years, making it a perfect launching pad for future AI associate degree programs across the country, Bryant said. The community college district is expected to have all five courses deployed for the spring 2021 semester by January, said Steven Gonzales, interim chancellor for MCCCD.
Researchers Augment Robotic Prosthetics With AI and Computer Vision โ IAM Network
The AI in robotic prostheses predicts the type of terrain users will be stepping on, quantifies the uncertainties associated with that prediction, and then incorporates that uncertainty into its decision-making. Researchers at North Carolina State University have integrated computer vision and artificial intelligence into off-the-shelf robotic prosthetics to improve walking on different types of terrain. The team built a device that attaches to the prosthetic limb to track movement and recognize different terrains. The AI is able to recognize six different terrains: downstairs, upstairs, cement, grass, tile, and concrete. "Lower-limb robotic prosthetics need to execute different behaviors based on the terrain users are walking on," said Edgar Lobaton, associate professor of computer engineering at North Carolina State University.

NVIDIA, Arterys Bridge Gap Between AI Research and Clinic
Around the world, researchers in startups, academic institutions and online communities are developing AI models for healthcare. Getting these models from their hard drives and into clinical settings can be challenging, however. Developers need feedback from healthcare practitioners on how their models can be optimized for the real world. So, San Francisco-based AI startup Arterys built a forum for these essential conversations between clinicians and researchers. Called the Arterys Marketplace, and now integrated with the NVIDIA Clara Deploy SDK, the platform makes it easy for researchers to share medical imaging AI models with clinicians, who can try it on their own data.
AI experts are sounding the alarm about crime-prediction algorithms
For years the tech industry, alongside some academics, has attempted to make a case for using "crime predicting" algorithms that, according to its proponents, would make the world a safer place. But experts who study artificial intelligence (AI) warn that reliance on, or blind faith in, any sort of predictive algorithm will only worsen the existing racism that pervades the criminal justice system. A public letter from more than 1,000 artificial intelligence experts from Harvard, MIT, Google, and Microsoft released this week wants to drive the point home. The experts addressed their letter to the Springer publishing company, urging it to cancel its plan to publish a paper in favor of using predictive algorithms for crime detection. The paper claims that the technology can predict the likelihood of an individual committing a crime with "80 percent accuracy" but experts say this technology will only help the "tech-to-prison-pipeline," Motherboard reports.
Six UC Berkeley-led projects win funding to combat COVID-19 with AI
The C3.ai Digital Transformation Institute has awarded six UC Berkeley faculty funding to use AI to mitigate the threat of COVID-19. Six UC Berkeley-led projects have won funding from the recently launched C3.ai Digital Transformation Institute to harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to combat the spread of COVID-19 and other emerging diseases. These wide-ranging research projects will use AI and machine learning tools to understand and reduce the threat posed by the SARS-CoV-2 virus in a variety of ways, from tracking the transmission dynamics of the virus in Mexico to speeding the discovery of small molecules that could one day serve as pharmaceutical treatments for the disease. The C3.ai Digital Transformation Institute, a research consortium established in March by enterprise AI software company C3.ai and headquartered at Berkeley and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, aims to mobilize AI, machine learning and the Internet of Things to transform societal-scale systems.
