Even prior to extended quarantines, lockdowns, and self-isolation, it was hard to imagine life without the electronic escapes of noise-cancelling earbuds, smartphones, and tablets. Of course, there was most certainly a before and after, a point around which the cultural gravity of our plugged-in-yet-tuned-out modern lives shifted. Its name is Walkman, and it was invented, in Japan, in 1979. After the Walkman arrived on American shores, in June of 1980, under the temporary name of Soundabout, our days would never be the same. Up to this point, music was primarily a shared experience: families huddling around furniture-sized Philcos; teens blasting tunes from automobiles or sock-hopping to transistor radios; the bar-room juke; break-dancers popping and locking to the sonic backdrop of a boom box.

The device that allows the human brain to connect to a computer could be implanted in a person for the first time later this year, announced the founder of Neuralink neurotechnology company, the tycoon Elon Musk. Last year, Musk's Neuralink introduced a special microchip and flexible fiber electrodes that should allow the human brain to connect to computers or machines. Smart glove translates sign language into speech in seconds
Scientists have created a glove that translates sign language into speech in a matter of seconds through a smartphone app. The hi-tech glove sends electronic signals generated from different movements of the fingers to a circuit board, which are then transmitted wirelessly to the phone. The app translates letters from movements on one hand, as per the American Sign Language (ASL) standard, into phrases, which are uttered by an automated voice. The patented technology aims to reduce the language barrier between people with hearing or speech impediments and those who don't understand sign language. Components used to make the device are cheap, flexible and highly durable, according to the team of engineers in the US, who plan to commercialise the technology if they can speed up the translation time even further.
AI experts warn against crime prediction algorithms, saying there are no 'physical features to criminality'
A number of AI researchers, data scientists, sociologists, and historians have written an open letter to end the publishing of research that claims artificial intelligence or facial recognition can predict whether a person is likely to be a criminal. The letter, signed by over 1000 experts, argues that data generated by the criminal justice system cannot be used to "identify criminals" or predict behaviour. Historical court and arrest data reflect the policies and practises of the criminal justice system and are therefore biased, the experts say. "These data reflect who police choose to arrest, how judges choose to rule, and which people are granted longer or more lenient sentences," the letter reads. Moreover, by continuing these studies, "'criminality' operates as a proxy for race due to racially discriminatory practices in law enforcement and criminal justice, research of this nature creates dangerous feedback loops" the letter says.
