Mass death paved the way for the Age of Fishes
With great biological havoc comes great opportunity. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. About 445 million years ago, our planet completely changed. Massive glaciers formed over the supercontinent Gondwana, sucking up sea water like an icy sponge. Now called the Late Ordovician mass extinction (LOME), Earth's first major mass extinction wiped out about 85 percent of all marine species as the ocean chemistry radically changed and Earth's climate turned bitter cold. However, with great biological havoc also comes opportunity.

What video doorbells see (and what they don't): Here's what you can expect Don't assume these gadgets will capture everything that happens on your porch. Understand these critical specs and you'll avoid a disappointing purchase. With a camera at the front door and an app on their phone, they jump to the conclusion that they'll capture faces on the sidewalk, license plates at the curb, and anybody cutting across the lawn. Most doorbell cameras deliver far more modest real-world performances. They have a tight field of view that sees what's directly in front of their lens; they're built to frame a visitor's face standing in front of the door, not the entire space the door.

Under the program, the returning astronauts will seal themselves inside the capsule, undock from the ISS, perform a controlled departure and reenter Earth's atmosphere for a parachute-assisted splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off the California coast.
Zombie fungus, 'living stones' among favorite botany discoveries of 2025
The tiny blooms of Dendrobium eruciforme, known as the caterpillar orchid due to its creeping habit and small size. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. It's easy to forget how much we still don't know about our planet's ecosystems . Every year, researchers identify thousands of plant and fungi species that were previously unknown to science. While it can be tough to highlight the most striking examples, an international team of scientists led by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (RBG Kew) in London, have offered their personal picks for 2025.
Meta announces a slew of nuclear energy agreements
The deals will bring 6.6 gigawatts of power online in the coming decade to power AI data centers. Meta has three new agreements to purchase nuclear power for its AI infrastructure as well as the, a 1-gigawatt data center being built in Ohio. The social media giant is partnering with power companies Vistra, TerraPower and Oklo to deliver an expected 6.6 gigawatts of generation to its projects by 2035. The company's agreement with TerraPower will fund the development of two new reactors capable of delivering up to 690 megawatts of power as early as 2032. The deal also gives Meta rights to energy from six other reactors that could deliver an additional 2.1 gigawatts by 2035.

Quantum neural network may be able to cheat the uncertainty principle
The Heisenberg uncertainty principle puts a limit on how precisely we can measure certain properties of quantum objects. But researchers may have found a way to bypass this limitation using a quantum version of a neural network. Given, for example, a chemically useful molecule, how can you predict what properties it might have in an hour or tomorrow? To make such predictions, researchers start by measuring its current properties. But for quantum objects, including some molecules, this can be unexpectedly difficult because each measurement can interfere with or change the outcome of the next measurement.
