'Scary': how misinformation and AI hallucinations are infiltrating Australia's parliament Mon 31 Aug 2026 11.00 EDTLast modified on Mon 31 Aug 2026 11.02 EDT Australia's government inquiry process is supposed to help parliament make better decisions, hearing from experts and constituents alike. But Guardian Australia can reveal that the system is being flooded with AI-generated material, which is inventing studies and attributing nonexistent research to real academics and authors. In some cases, committee reports have cited submissions in which the majority of sources appear to be AI-generated "hallucinations", when large language models (LLMs) invent content that looks real but doesn't actually exist.

Honor Robot Phone hands-on: A gimbal phone experiment with promising results

Engadget

In an era of hugely popular gimbal cameras like DJI's Osmo series, not to mention countless smartphone gimbals, Honor's Robot Phone is an ambitious attempt to combine that stabilization technology with the phone itself -- no peripheral needed. Its experimental new flagship phone is honestly less of a robot and more of a gimbal phone, but that would have been a terrible name. Is this the answer to countless content creators' dreams? When Honor revealed the device at MWC 2026 earlier this year, it was arguably the most exciting device on display at the Barcelona trade show. Despite the international reveal, the Robot Phone won't officially launch beyond China -- the device just went on sale there.

Why has Greece signed a 3.5bn missile deal with Israel?

Al Jazeera

What is Iran's Pickaxe Mountain? Why has Greece signed a $3.5bn missile deal with Israel? Share Why has Greece signed a $3.5bn missile deal with Israel? on social media Greece has inked a weapons deal with Israel that will see a $3.5bn multi-layered air defence system delivered to Athens in what is the largest defence agreement ever between the two countries. The agreement, signed on Monday in Tel Aviv, comes as Greece's relations with its neighbour and rival, Turkiye, have grown more sour. It also, however, breaks with a broader European wariness of being seen as too close to Israel, following the genocidal war on Gaza and Israel's increasingly blatant efforts to annex the occupied West Bank.

ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox to face the EU's strictest platform rules

Engadget

The European Union is tightening its grip on ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox. The European Commission (EC) designated ChatGPT as a "Very Large Online Search Engine," and Reddit and Roblox as "Very Large Online Platforms." These three platforms each crossed the threshold of at least 45 million average monthly users in the European Union, triggering the designations that carry "the most stringent rules" under the Digital Services Act (DSA). "These new designations mean that ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox will now be held to a higher standard of scrutiny and accountability in the European Union, in line with their large impact on our citizens and society," Henna Virkkunen, the EC's executive vice-president for tech sovereignty, security and democracy, said in a press release. The "very large" designation means stricter enforcement with ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox's services and algorithmic systems, particularly when it comes to how they can spread illegal content, cause negative effects for minors and impact electoral processes.
