How is AI Contributing to the Education Sector?

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence has entered every industry, and the educational sector is no exception. The administrative staff, management, teachers, and students are all using AI in different ways to achieve similar goals. During the last few years, AI has spread its roots much wider and deeper in this sector. Markets and Markets has predicted that the global market share of AI in education is estimated to reach $3.68 billion by 2023 at a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 47%. Another platform, Market Search Engine, has predicted that the share will reach $5.80 billion by 2025.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang Talks The Powers Of Automation

#artificialintelligence

It's not altogether surprising that a company earning billions of dollars a year making the chips that power today's hyperrealistic video games has a business plan inspired by a science-fiction novel. Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, the nation's most valuable semiconductor company, with a stock price of $645 a share and a market cap of $400 billion, is out to create the metaverse, what Huang describes "a virtual world that is a digital twin of ours." Huang credits author Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash, filled with collectives of shared 3-D spaces and virtually enhanced physical spaces that are extensions of the Internet, for conjuring the metaverse. This is already playing out with the massively popular online games like Fortnite and Minecraft, where users create richly imagined virtual worlds. Now the concept is being put to work by Nvidia and others.

Seeing Quadruple: Artificial Intelligence Leads to Discovery That Can Help Solve Cosmological Puzzles – SciTechDaily

#artificialintelligence

Four of the newfound quadruply imaged quasars are shown here: From top left and moving clockwise, the objects are: GraL J1537-3010 or "Wolf's Paw;" GraL J0659 1629 or "Gemini's Crossbow;" GraL J1651-0417 or "Dragon's Kite;" GraL J2038-4008 or "Microscope Lens." The fuzzy dot in the middle of the images is the lensing galaxy, the gravity of which is splitting the light from the quasar behind it in such a way to produce four quasar images. By modeling these systems and monitoring how the different images vary in brightness over time, astronomers can determine the expansion rate of the universe and help solve cosmological problems. With the help of machine-learning techniques, a team of astronomers has discovered a dozen quasars that have been warped by a naturally occurring cosmic "lens" and split into four similar images. Quasars are extremely luminous cores of distant galaxies that are powered by supermassive black holes.

How State's Disinformation-Fighting Arm Uses Artificial Intelligence

#artificialintelligence

Emerging technologies--and partnerships promoting their use--have proven instrumental for the State Department's Global Engagement Center, a hub that steers federal efforts to counter state-sponsored propaganda and disinformation campaigns aimed at undermining the U.S. "Artificial intelligence and the tools that it offers are really helping us to understand what's happening in the environment, and to identify coordinated activity," the GEC's Acting Coordinator Daniel Kimmage said Thursday. "There's obviously a much broader range of activity across the State Department, but for us it's a powerful way to better understand what's happening in the environment, and identify coordinated activity." The center was mandated by Congress several years ago to help tackle challenges around diplomacy in the digital age. At an event hosted by Foreign Policy, Kimmage offered a glimpse into how technology is impacting and enabling GEC's work, particularly as online disinformation campaigns led by U.S. adversaries grow in sophistication. "We've got what you might describe as our traditional sources of information--we have the cables, our diplomatic colleagues out in the field. We have an analysis from our colleagues in the intelligence community, and we have a huge and growing ocean of open-source information," he explained.

Artificial intelligence is about to change how you buy lipstick (and other cosmetics)

#artificialintelligence

The Lipstick Index, as it's known, was a phrase coined by Leonard Lauder, chairman of the board at Estee Lauder, in the early noughties when it became clear in times of economic crisis, sales of color cosmetics - in particular lipstick - soar as an affordable way to treat yourself. Last year, sales of cosmetics plummeted. With bustling make-up counters in department stores closed for much of 2020, sales of designer brand cosmetics were down by more than 40% according to market research firm NPD, which equates to a loss of £500 million (around $689 million and AU$902 million). Meanwhile, sales of more affordable cosmetics in supermarkets fell by 22% in the UK, according to the Top Products survey from retail trade magazine, The Grocer, adding a further £183 million loss (around $256 million / AU$218 million). A combination of the rise of working from home and mandatory masks meant thousands of us, including this writer, ditched our make-up bags altogether.

AI-based email security provider Cyberfish acquired by Cofense

#artificialintelligence

US-based phishing detection and response solution provider Cofense announced last week the acquisition of Israel's Cyberfish, a provider of next-generation phishing protection powered by computer vision and advanced machine learning technology. Cofense said that by integrating innovative machine learning capabilities from Cyberfish with Cofense's detection and response technology, the American company will bring to market a holistic, advanced automation solution for email protection, detection, and response. According to Cofense, organizations are rethinking their email security architecture and technology stack with the acceleration of digital transformation and migration to cloud email services from Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace. Cofense's phishing intelligence, already deployed in thousands of enterprises around the world, will be used to train and evolve Cyberfish's machine-learning algorithms to block malicious emails in real-time, the company said. "Cyberfish is excited to join forces with Cofense to solve the phishing problem and take email security to another level," said Dima Kagan, Cyberfish CEO and Co-founder.

Artificial Intelligence: Can We Trust Machines to Make Fair Decisions?

#artificialintelligence

But what happens when artificial intelligence is biased? What if it makes mistakes on important decisions -- from who gets a job interview or a mortgage to who gets arrested and how much time they ultimately serve for a crime? "These everyday decisions can greatly affect the trajectories of our lives and increasingly, they're being made not by people, but by machines," said UC Davis computer science professor Ian Davidson. A growing body of research, including Davidson's, indicates that bias in artificial intelligence can lead to biased outcomes, especially for minority populations and women. Facial recognition technologies, for example, have come under increasing scrutiny because they've been shown to better detect white faces than they do the faces of people with darker skin.
