The science behind what we eat for breakfast
Our ideas of what qualifies as breakfast food are cultural distinctions, not scientific ones. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. If you live in the United States, there's a good chance you were picturing some combination of eggs, bacon, cereal, and/or pancakes. Of course, we also know that a classic British breakfast consists of beans and fried bread--two savory foods most Americans don't associate with their first meal of the day. Is there a science behind why we think of some foods as breakfast and others as not?
Distillation Can Make AI Models Smaller and Cheaper
A fundamental technique lets researchers use a big, expensive model to train another model for less. The Chinese AI company DeepSeek released a chatbot earlier this year called R1, which drew a huge amount of attention. Most of it focused on the fact that a relatively small and unknown company said it had built a chatbot that rivaled the performance of those from the world's most famous AI companies, but using a fraction of the computer power and cost. As a result, the stocks of many Western tech companies plummeted; Nvidia, which sells the chips that run leading AI models, lost more stock value in a single day than any company in history. Some of that attention involved an element of accusation.
Big Tech Dreams of Putting Data Centers in Space
A sci-fi idea is gaining supporters, from billionaires to city councils. Whether it's feasible is another matter. All products featured on WIRED are independently selected by our editors. They shed pounds with weight-loss jabs - but then came the loose skin
After losing nearly six stone since December with the help of weight-loss injections, Emilly Murray has been left with an unwanted reminder of her former body - loose skin. I can't wear what I want to wear, says the 35-year-old from Liverpool. I cannot get my legs out because the skin hangs over my knee so much. While she doesn't regret losing weight for the benefit of her health, Emilly says the loose skin on her thighs really does get me down as it makes her feel self-conscious, and the way she looks naked makes her feel like a catfish. It looks okay when it's all pulled in, but then I feel like, when I take my clothes off, I look like a 90-year-old woman.

At 45, Gandy's striking dark brown hair, sharp cheekbones and piercing blue eyes have been at the centre of some of fashion's most iconic campaigns of the last two decades, and he is one of the few male models to become a household name. I always say that I was inspired by the female supermodels, Gandy says, name-checking Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell. You don't even need to say the surnames.
Faisal Islam: Will the US tech bromance turn around the UK economy?
In the old Camden Town Hall opposite London's St Pancras station, away from the white tie and tails of the pageantry at Windsor Castle, was perhaps the most substantive display of the consequences of Donald Trump's state visit. In front of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, many members of the British and US cabinets and the cream of the European tech industry, a highly-crafted video played, featuring the long history of UK science. It included George Stephenson, Charles Babbage, Ada Lovelace, Alan Turing and Sir Demis Hassabis, with dozens of UK start-up companies from every corner of the country listed. It was a cross between a UK government investment promotion video and the Danny Boyle 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, except for one crucial detail - it was voiced by Jensen Huang, the American Nvidia artificial intelligence (AI) and microchip magnate. This week, Trump said the tech tycoon was taking over the world and the boss of the company, which hit a market value of $4tn (ยฃ2.9tn) this summer, appears to have gone all-in on the UK in quite an extraordinary way.
