Are we prepared for more killer police robots? Noel Sharkey

#artificialintelligence

When a police robot is used to kill, one has to ask if we are at a tipping point. The dangerous events in Dallas, in which 12 policemen were shot, made it seem permissible to repurpose a robot to apply lethal force. When an armed suspect refused to surrender, a Remotec robot armed with plastic explosives was dispatched to kill him. This wasn't Robocop and it didn't operate autonomously. It was a bomb disposal robot remotely controlled by police officers.

Stefanini Launches Artificial Intelligence Platform, Sophie

#artificialintelligence

Southfield, MI, June 2016 – Stefanini, a 1B global IT provider, announced today that the company is launching Sophie, its artificial intelligence platform with the ability to turn data into valuable solutions. Aware of the latest trends, Stefanini has invested and developed this platform over the last 3 years as a Research & Development and pilot project for clients in Brazil, and now, the company is launching the platform in the United States. "We are very proud to introduce Sophie for our clients in North America, reinforcing Stefanini's commitment to connect people and technology innovations with a goal to create business value," said Antonio Moreira, Stefanini CEO, North America and Asia Pacific. "Our artificial intelligence platform can improve the end-user experience and deliver smarter and more efficient services," affirmed Mr. Moreira. Technology research firm Gartner forecasts that by 2017, autonomics-based managed services and cognitive platforms will fuel a significant reduction in the cost of IT services by automating repetitive tasks currently tackled by humans.

The spectacled bear (Tremarctos ornatus), also known as Spectacled bear, spectacled bear, South American bear, ucumari and Jukumari, is a species of carnivorous mammal of the Ursidae family. He is currently in danger of extinction, in order to let more people know of this great Venezuelan Bear, is to set up this chat in which you spoke with the spectacled bear, and you can lead a normal conversation, a common chat, and you information of the didactically, among the questions that you can do it are: * Ask him where ers * Ask him eating * Preguntale weight * Tell you speak * Tell your name * Ask how your name * Ask him jokes Well these are some of the many ways in which can interact with, so download it and try to chat with yourself, and put it to the test, you can write like you talk. Thus we aware of the existence of this great bear, and the more people you know the easier it will prevent their extinction.

Yen and dollar highs offer macro hedge funds some relief - Artificial Intelligence Online

#artificialintelligence

June was kind to macro hedge funds. They were up more than 3 per cent, in what was their best month since 2010, according to data from Hedge Fund Research, buoyed by long positions on the yen and -- for the most fortunate -- long on both the yen and the dollar, and short sterling. Currencies and currency-related trades have been among the few bright spots for hedge funds recently (along with gold, which has risen more than 30 per cent since the end of 2015, according to Credit Suisse). Riding the yen and dollar up and taking on derivative trades, such as shorting Chinese companies that have lots of US dollar debt and dollar costs, have been among the few clear trends to follow. But generally, these are challenging times for the industry both in the short and longer term.

Retrospective Causal Inference with Machine Learning Ensembles: An Application to Anti-Recidivism Policies in Colombia

arXiv.org Machine Learning

We present new methods to estimate causal effects retrospectively from micro data with the assistance of a machine learning ensemble. This approach overcomes two important limitations in conventional methods like regression modeling or matching: (i) ambiguity about the pertinent retrospective counterfactuals and (ii) potential misspecification, overfitting, and otherwise bias-prone or inefficient use of a large identifying covariate set in the estimation of causal effects. Our method targets the analysis toward a well defined ``retrospective intervention effect'' (RIE) based on hypothetical population interventions and applies a machine learning ensemble that allows data to guide us, in a controlled fashion, on how to use a large identifying covariate set. We illustrate with an analysis of policy options for reducing ex-combatant recidivism in Colombia.

US Artificial Intelligence Market to Grow at a Staggering 75% CAGR Until 2021: TechSci Research /PR Newswire UK/

#artificialintelligence

According to TechSci Research report, "United States Artificial Intelligence Market, By Application, By Region, By End User Competition Forecast & Opportunities, 2011-2021", the artificial intelligence market in the US is projected to grow at a CAGR of 75% during 2016 - 2021 on account of growing artificial intelligence technology adoption in consumer electronic devices, research and developmental activities in healthcare industry, unmanned aerial vehicles, autonomous cars, etc. Moreover, venture capital investments in this sector, are in full swing, especially in the US. The country is witnessing numerous start-ups sprouting every year, backed by various angel investors and venture capitalists. Major venture capitalist active in the United States artificial intelligence market include Accel, General Catalyst Partners, GV, Work-Bench, Promus Ventures, Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers, Khosla Ventures, Samsung Electronics, Wipro Technologies, Samsung Global Innovation Centre, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, and Formation 8, among others. In 2015, western region of the United States dominated the artificial intelligence market of the country, on account of presence of major end users such as cyber security solution providers, healthcare institutes, government headquarters, etc., in the region.

What it actually takes for schools to 'go digital' - The Hechinger Report

Soon, the glow of hundreds of screens illuminates each face in every classroom. Inside Skye Templeton's seventh-grade Social Studies class, students are enthralled by online documents and videos about the casualties of World War II. Nearby, in Sara Sharpe's sixth-grade math class, a small group of students works through computer drills covering ratios and percents. And, across the hallway, English and Language Arts teacher Lori Meyer expresses amazement at how much her eighth graders enjoyed doing their final project: a research paper and iMovie on the 1960s. With their MacBooks, students researched topics, wrote their papers, and submitted to their teacher via email. "This is the first time in my 12 years of teaching that students said writing the research paper was their favorite assignment," Meyer said, "and I know it was due to the laptops."

Robot-delivered lethal explosive in Dallas police standoff was a first, experts say

PBS NewsHour

Members of the Boston Police bomb squad demonstrate a robot named "Slick" during an active shooter drill at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S. June 12, 2016. Experts say Dallas police executed an unprecedented move Friday morning, when officers used a robot-delivered bomb to engage a suspect accused of fatally shooting five police officers and injuring seven others during a protest. The shooting started toward the end of a non-violent protest over recent fatal police shootings. Police engaged in a standoff with the suspect, who was later identified as Micah Xavier Johnson, after he barricaded himself inside a parking garage. Following lengthy negotiations with the police, Johnson told officers he had planted bombs in the area.

Beating level-set methods for 3D seismic data interpolation: a primal-dual alternating approach

arXiv.org Machine Learning

Acquisition cost is a crucial bottleneck for seismic workflows, and low-rank formulations for data interpolation allow practitioners to `fill in' data volumes from critically subsampled data acquired in the field. Tremendous size of seismic data volumes required for seismic processing remains a major challenge for these techniques. We propose a new approach to solve residual constrained formulations for interpolation. We represent the data volume using matrix factors, and build a block-coordinate algorithm with constrained convex subproblems that are solved with a primal-dual splitting scheme. The new approach is competitive with state of the art level-set algorithms that interchange the role of objectives with constraints. We use the new algorithm to successfully interpolate a large scale 5D seismic data volume, generated from the geologically complex synthetic 3D Compass velocity model, where 80% of the data has been removed.
