PayPal update lets users transfer funds to friends and family with Siri

Daily Mail - Science & tech

PayPal users can now send money to friends and family using just their voice, after the payment service announced it was to integrate into Apple's Siri. Siri is the voice-based virtual assistant embedded into the iPhone, and can be used to set reminders, answer questions and help with tasks. From today, PayPal said users running iOS 10 on their iPhone will be able to use commands such as'Hey Siri, send John £25 using PayPal' to transfer money as an alternative to using the official app. From today, PayPal said users running iOS 10 on their iPhone will be able to use commands such as'Hey Siri, send John £25 using PayPal' to transfer money as an alternative to using the official app Apple's software uses voice recognition so only the known owner of the device can use the voice commands. PayPal's Meron Colbeci said consumers in 30 countries would be able to use the new service.

You can now tell Siri to send money via PayPal

Engadget

Siri is still very much a walled garden, but Apple has slowly begun opening its voice assistant to third parties. At its WWDC keynote back in June, the company confirmed app makers could let iPhone and iPad users send and receive money via Siri, with Square Cash and Monzo becoming the first to tap into that functionality. Now, bigger players are tapping into hands-free money transfers, after PayPal announced it too now lets users in over 30 countries send and request money via using only their voice. Sending and receiving is very easy, but you'll first need to link Siri with your PayPal account. This involves granting PayPal access to your Contacts and confirming via two-factor authentication (a code sent via text message) that you are who you say you are.

Robots are coming for our jobs--and that may be a good thing - ETHOZ

#artificialintelligence

We just came back from a week at an idyllic beach resort in Malaysia. Not having to wear shoes for a week felt liberating. Internet was non-existent in most parts of the island and sketchy at best at upmarket resorts. Even though it was utopia for a week, we could not wait to get back on the grid. Technology is a double-edged sword.

How Internet Users Can Benefit from Artificial Intelligence - eMarketer

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI), in its most widely understood definition, involves the ability of machines to emulate human thinking, reasoning and decision-making. Though AI continues to develop and become more sophisticated, internet users worldwide are seeing benefits of the technology, like its ability to complete dangerous tasks, or even the companionship it provides. Weber Shandwick and KRC Research polled 2,100 adult internet users in Brazil, Canada, China, the UK and the US. The benefits of AI mentioned range widely, but generally, respondents believe the technology can help solve a lot of problems, as well as assist them with any decisions they need to make--ultimately it's convenient. Some 69% of internet users said that one of the perceived benefits of AI was that it gives them time to pursue other activities, and almost as many respondents said AI can deliver services that provide greater ease and convenience. Furthermore, internet users can see the benefits AI can bring to the economy, as well as to energy and natural resources.

Washington Post will use AI to cover every major result on US Election Day

#artificialintelligence

The Washington Post plans to cover every major race on Election Day using AI. Using an in-house build data-crunching programme called Heliograf, the Post plans to provide detailed coverage of nearly 500 contests around the U.S. Allowing their team of 60 political reporters to focus their attention on high-profile contests and races. "This will give readers Washington Post-quality coverage at all levels but will also be used to alert reporters to things that they may not see, or draw their attention to a particular race that they didn't expect to be a close one," said Jeremy Gilbert, the Post's director of strategic initiatives. The Post experimented with the software to cover events at the Rio De Janeiro Olympics this summer but will look to expand its use on Election Day. Using templates and pre-written previews, the program will automatically update stories as results come in, said Sam Han, the Post's director of data science.

AI Startup Battle coming to São Paulo on December 9, at the BSSML16

#artificialintelligence

The Artificial Intelligence Startup Battle where the jury is an algorithm keeps on traveling around the world! We are glad to announce our next stop: São Paulo, Brazil, on December 9, 2016. This will be the third edition of a series of very exciting battles, where five AI startups compete with each other and are judged by a Machine Learning algorithm, with no human involvement. The world's premiere Artificial Intelligence Startup Battle took place in Valencia, Spain, last March 2016, when Telefónica Open Future_ and BigML presented PreSeries to the world. The reaction of the audience was extremely positive!

Washington Post to Cover Every Major Race on Election Day With Help of Artificial Intelligence

The Washington Post plans to cover every House, Senate and gubernatorial race in the country on Election Day with the aid of what it describes as artificial intelligence. The plan is to use a data-crunching program called Heliograf, which was built in-house, to bolster efforts by the Post's team of 60 political reporters to provide detailed coverage of nearly 500 contests across the U.S. Reporters will focus their attention on covering high-profile contests and races expected to be close or pivotal, while the program fills in the gaps. FETLT 2016 - Future and Emerging Trends in Language Technologies

#artificialintelligence

Language Technologies must be considered an area of particular relevance both at the academic and industrial levels. In recent years, several programs have been designed to promote research and development, entrepreneurship and innovation that have highlighted the key role of these technologies for progress and society. At the European level, we have witnessed a strong funding action in the field from the 7th Framework Programme to the H2020 that have resulted in the creation of what has been called the European Multilingual Digital Single Market. In Spain, for example, the government presented a Plan to Promote Language Technologies with an estimated investment of over 70 million euros. In 2015, a group of professors and researchers at the University of Seville faced the challenge to convene a workshop where experts from different countries could meet to analyze emerging trends in this field so that they could also envision the pace for the future.

IBM Watson: Not So Elementary

#artificialintelligence

It's now a hired gun for thousands of companies in at least 20 industries. David Kenny took the helm of IBM's Watson Group ibm in February, after Big Blue acquired The Weather Company, where Kenny had served as CEO. In the months since then, the Watson business has grown dramatically, with well over 100,000 developers worldwide now working with more than three dozen Watson application program interfaces (APIs). Fortune Deputy Editor Clifton Leaf caught up with Kenny in mid-October, when IBM Watson's General Manager was in San Francisco, getting ready to open Watson West--the AI system's newest business outpost--and to launch the company's second World of Watson conference, a gathering of its burgeoning ecosystem of partners and users, in Las Vegas on Oct. 24. KENNY: Deep learning is a subset of machine learning, which essentially is a set of algorithms. Deep-learning uses more advanced things like convolutional neural networks, which basically means you can look at things more deeply into more layers. Machine learning could work, for example, when it came to reading text.
