Tornado hits Paris suburbs leaving one dead
A tornado tore through Val-d'Oise, north of Paris, on Monday, toppling construction cranes, damaging properties and uprooting trees in its path. One person was killed and four others critically injured, authorities said. The town of Ermont, about 20 km (13 miles) northeast of Paris was hardest hit by the sudden twister, which caused damage in multiple districts. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said on the X social media platform that it had been a storm of rare intensity. Drone footage shows blaze destroying the historic Bernaga Monastery in Italy.
Government insists it is cutting red tape for business
The Business Secretary has insisted the government is making it easier for businesses by reducing red tape. Peter Kyle defended Labour's approach to business, telling the BBC it will implement changes in a way that is pro-worker and pro-business. Ahead of next month's Budget, Chancellor Rachel Reeves is launching a crackdown on needless form-filling for businesses at the first-ever Regional Investment Summit in Birmingham. The government has been criticised by firms who say increased employers' National Insurance contributions and the Employment Rights Bill add to the burdens facing businesses. The Chancellor will say at the Birmingham summit on Tuesday that the changes will save firms almost ยฃ6bn a year.
Benchmarking noisy label detection methods
Pickler, Henrique, Kamassury, Jorge K. S., Silva, Danilo
Label noise is a common problem in real-world datasets, affecting both model training and validation. Clean data are essential for achieving strong performance and ensuring reliable evaluation. While various techniques have been proposed to detect noisy labels, there is no clear consensus on optimal approaches. We perform a comprehensive benchmark of detection methods by decomposing them into three fundamental components: label agreement function, aggregation method, and information gathering approach (in-sample vs out-of-sample). This decomposition can be applied to many existing detection methods, and enables systematic comparison across diverse approaches. To fairly compare methods, we propose a unified benchmark task, detecting a fraction of training samples equal to the dataset's noise rate. We also introduce a novel metric: the false negative rate at this fixed operating point. We identify that in-sample information gathering using average probability aggregation combined with the logit margin as the label agreement function achieves the best results across most scenarios. Our findings provide practical guidance for designing new detection methods and selecting techniques for specific applications. Keywords: Noisy label detection, Noisy labels, Dataset cleaning, Data quality, Benchmark, Neural networks 1. Introduction Most supervised learning methods assume a perfectly labeled dataset. However, training data often contain incorrectly labeled instances. Even large, standard benchmark datasets, such as CIFAR, ImageNet, and MS-COCO, are known to have noisy labels [1, 2].
Comparing LLMs for Sentiment Analysis in Financial Market News
Teles, Lucas Eduardo Pereira, Figueiredo, Carlos M. S.
This article presents a comparative study of large language models (LLMs) in the task of sentiment analysis of fi nancial market news. This work aims to analyze the performance difference of these models in this important natural language processing task within the context of fi nance. LLM models are compared with classical approaches, allowing for the quanti fi cation of the bene fi ts of each tested model or approach. Results show that large language models outperform classical models in the vast majority of cases.
Catholic clergy sex abuse survivors hopeful after Pope Leo meeting
Survivors of sex abuse by members of the Catholic clergy have expressed hope after meeting Pope Leo at the Vatican for the first time. Gemma Hickey, board president of Ending Clergy Abuse (ECA Global), told the BBC it spoke volumes he had met them so soon in his papacy. The group is pushing for a global zero-tolerance policy, already adopted in the US, of permanently removing a priest who admits or is proven to have sexually abused a child. The Pope acknowledged there was resistance in some parts of the world to this, Hickey said. The new Pope, who assumed the role in May, has inherited the issue, which has haunted the Catholic Church for decades and the Vatican has struggled to root out.
Forgotten rival of Ancient Rome featured an impressive water basin
Gabii was a once powerful city, but was largely abandoned by 50 CE. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. The city of Rome has been inhabited continuously for 14,000 years --long before it became known by its current name. While this makes the Italian capital city a world capital in terms of archaeology and ancient history, the centuries and centuries of construction make it difficult to study the city's ancient beginnings . Enter Gabii, an ancient Roman city 11 miles east of Rome you've probably never heard of unless you're an expert in the field.

Zelensky ready to join Trump-Putin talks if invited
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said he would be ready to join Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin at a proposed summit in Hungary if he were invited. The US and Russian presidents announced on Thursday they planned to hold talks on the war in Ukraine in Budapest, possibly in the coming weeks. In comments released on Monday, Zelensky told reporters: If it is an invitation in a format where we meet as three or, as it's called, shuttle diplomacy then in one format or another, we will agree. Meanwhile, media reports have suggested his White House meeting with Trump on Friday descended into a shouting match - with the US side urging Ukraine to accept Russia's terms to end the war. Zelensky was guarded during his first press briefing since the talks, but still his comments made clear there were large areas of disagreement between the two sides.
