Artificial intelligence learns continental hydrology

#artificialintelligence

Changes to water masses which are stored on the continents can be detected with the help of satellites. The data sets on the Earth's gravitational field which are required for this, stem from the GRACE and GRACE-FO satellite missions. As these data sets only include the typical large-scale mass anomalies, no conclusions about small scale structures, such as the actual distribution of water masses in rivers and river branches, are possible. Using the South American continent as an example, the Earth system modelers at the German Research Centre for Geosciences GFZ, have developed a new Deep-Learning-Method, which quantifies small as well as large-scale changes to the water storage with the help of satellite data. This new method cleverly combines Deep-Learning, hydrological models and Earth observations from gravimetry and altimetry.

Drone video captures dolphins sharing fish and getting frisky in Mexico

Daily Mail - Science & tech

It turns out humans are not the only creatures that use food as foreplay. Researchers in southwestern Mexico have recorded a group of rough-toothed dolphins sharing a meal and getting frisky. A drone camera caught two dolphins passing a piece of fish back and forth in what may be the first video of the conduct. The repast seemed to inspire some amorous behavior, as well, with two males initiating sexual encounters with another member of the pod. Rough-toothed dolphins spend up to 80 percent of their time in the ocean depths, making them extremely difficult to study.

How Technology is Impacting Humanity

#artificialintelligence

We are living in unpreceded times, and I am sure that you agree with me that what we all are experiencing right now is something very unique and unexpected. I am referring to the global pandemic of Covid-19, which was impossible for all of us to predict, expect or adjudicate which would more less be impossible to predict or expect this year. The role of technology in human lives has never been so crucial and relevant. Right now most of us are truly dependent on being connected with the world via digital technologies. From working remotely to shopping online, to seeking medical support with telemedicine, or reaching out to connect with your family and friends – technology is the connectivity link that plays an unparalleled social role for human engagement right now.

IDC: Worldwide spending on AI to double over next four years

#artificialintelligence

Worldwide spending on artificial intelligence will double over the next four years to reach $110 billion in 2024, according to new spending figures released by IDC. The analyst firm says spending will grow on AI will grow from $50.1 billion in 2020 to more than $110 billion in 2024, with spending on AI systems set to accelerate over the next several years as organisations deploy the technology as part of their digital transformation efforts and to remain competitive in the digital economy. "Companies will adopt AI -- not just because they can, but because they must," says Ritu Jyoti, program vice president, Artificial Intelligence at IDC. "AI is the technology that will help businesses to be agile, innovate, and scale. The companies that become'AI powered' will have the ability to synthesise information (using AI to convert data into information and then into knowledge), the capacity to learn (using AI to understand relationships between knowledge and apply the learning to business problems), and the capability to deliver insights at scale (using AI to support decisions and automation)," he explains. Jyoti says two of the leading drivers for AI adoption are delivering a better customer experience and helping employees to get better at their jobs.

Dynamic Models Applied to Value Learning in Artificial Intelligence

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Experts in Artificial Intelligence (AI) development predict that advances in the development of intelligent systems and agents will reshape vital areas in our society. Nevertheless, if such an advance is not made prudently and critically-reflexively, it can result in negative outcomes for humanity. For this reason, several researchers in the area are trying to develop a robust, beneficial, and safe concept of AI for the preservation of humanity and the environment. Currently, several of the open problems in the field of AI research arise from the difficulty of avoiding unwanted behaviors of intelligent agents and systems, and at the same time specifying what we want such systems to do, especially when we look for the possibility of intelligent agents acting in several domains over the long term. It is of utmost importance that artificial intelligent agents have their values aligned with human values, given the fact that we cannot expect an AI to develop human moral values simply because of its intelligence, as discussed in the Orthogonality Thesis. Perhaps this difficulty comes from the way we are addressing the problem of expressing objectives, values, and ends, using representational cognitive methods. A solution to this problem would be the dynamic approach proposed by Dreyfus, whose phenomenological philosophy shows that the human experience of being-in-the-world in several aspects is not well represented by the symbolic or connectionist cognitive method, especially in regards to the question of learning values. A possible approach to this problem would be to use theoretical models such as SED (situated embodied dynamics) to address the values learning problem in AI.

The linear conditional expectation in Hilbert space

arXiv.org Machine Learning

The linear conditional expectation (LCE) provides a best linear (or rather, affine) estimate of the conditional expectation and hence plays an important r\^ole in approximate Bayesian inference, especially the Bayes linear approach. This article establishes the analytical properties of the LCE in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space context. In addition, working in the space of affine Hilbert--Schmidt operators, we establish a regularisation procedure for this LCE. As an important application, we obtain a simple alternative derivation and intuitive justification of the conditional mean embedding formula, a concept widely used in machine learning to perform the conditioning of random variables by embedding them into reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces.

Video game superpower 'Call of Duty: Black Ops' embraces its history and returns to Cold War in newest episode

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

The next Call of Duty video game returns to the setting of the original Black Ops, when Cold War intrigue dominated global relations. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, out Nov. 13, will be available for Sony PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PCs on Battle.net The action takes place during the Cold War in 1981, which was "a year that saw two global superpowers locked in a nuclear arms race, conspiracies about presidential elections, illegal military operations on both sides, the paranoia of spies living next door, and looming over all of this was the fear and shadow of World War III," said Dan Vondrak, creative developer at Raven Software. Nintendo Switch:Popular game consoles are finally back in stock--here's where to get one Summer games:Coronavirus-curbed video gamers are falling for'Fall Guys' and other diversions Raven worked on all previous Black Ops games and, for the new game, teamed up with another Activision-owned studio Treyarch, which has spearheaded the previous Black Ops releases. Black Ops Cold War is a direct sequel to the original Black Ops, which was set in the Sixties and included action in Cuba and the Vietnam War.

AI spending to double

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Artificial Intelligence Spending Guide, spending on AI systems will accelerate over the next several years as organizations deploy artificial intelligence as part of their digital transformation efforts and to remain competitive in the digital economy.
