TaTa: A Multilingual Table-to-Text Dataset for African Languages

Existing data-to-text generation datasets are mostly limited to English. To address this lack of data, we create Table-to-Text in African languages (TaTa), the first large multilingual table-to-text dataset with a focus on African languages. We created TaTa by transcribing figures and accompanying text in bilingual reports by the Demographic and Health Surveys Program, followed by professional translation to make the dataset fully parallel. TaTa includes 8,700 examples in nine languages including four African languages (Hausa, Igbo, Swahili, and Yor\`ub\'a) and a zero-shot test language (Russian). We additionally release screenshots of the original figures for future research on multilingual multi-modal approaches. Through an in-depth human evaluation, we show that TaTa is challenging for current models and that less than half the outputs from an mT5-XXL-based model are understandable and attributable to the source data. We further demonstrate that existing metrics perform poorly for TaTa and introduce learned metrics that achieve a high correlation with human judgments. Semantic Novelty Detection and Characterization in Factual Text Involving Named Entities

Much of the existing work on text novelty detection has been studied at the topic level, i.e., identifying whether the topic of a document or a sentence is novel or not. Little work has been done at the fine-grained semantic level (or contextual level). For example, given that we know Elon Musk is the CEO of a technology company, the sentence "Elon Musk acted in the sitcom The Big Bang Theory" is novel and surprising because normally a CEO would not be an actor. Existing topic-based novelty detection methods work poorly on this problem because they do not perform semantic reasoning involving relations between named entities in the text and their background knowledge. This paper proposes an effective model (called PAT-SND) to solve the problem, which can also characterize the novelty. An annotated dataset is also created. Evaluation shows that PAT-SND outperforms 10 baselines by large margins.


Enhancing the Transformer Decoder with Transition-based Syntax

Notwithstanding recent advances, syntactic generalization remains a challenge for text decoders. While some studies showed gains from incorporating source-side symbolic syntactic and semantic structure into text generation Transformers, very little work addressed the decoding of such structure. We propose a general approach for tree decoding using a transition-based approach. Examining the challenging test case of incorporating Universal Dependencies syntax into machine translation, we present substantial improvements on test sets that focus on syntactic generalization, while presenting improved or comparable performance on standard MT benchmarks. Further qualitative analysis addresses cases where syntactic generalization in the vanilla Transformer decoder is inadequate and demonstrates the advantages afforded by integrating syntactic information.


Is Facial Recognition Biased at Near-Infrared Spectrum As Well?

Published academic research and media articles suggest face recognition is biased across demographics. Specifically, unequal performance is obtained for women, dark-skinned people, and older adults. However, these published studies have examined the bias of facial recognition in the visible spectrum (VIS). Factors such as facial makeup, facial hair, skin color, and illumination variation have been attributed to the bias of this technology at the VIS. The near-infrared (NIR) spectrum offers an advantage over the VIS in terms of robustness to factors such as illumination changes, facial makeup, and skin color. Therefore, it is worthwhile to investigate the bias of facial recognition at the near-infrared spectrum (NIR). This first study investigates the bias of the face recognition systems at the NIR spectrum. To this aim, two popular NIR facial image datasets namely, CASIA-Face-Africa and Notre-Dame-NIVL consisting of African and Caucasian subjects, respectively, are used to investigate the bias of facial recognition technology across gender and race. Interestingly, experimental results suggest equitable face recognition performance across gender and race at the NIR spectrum.


Cross-Lingual and Cross-Domain Crisis Classification for Low-Resource Scenarios

Social media data has emerged as a useful source of timely information about real-world crisis events. One of the main tasks related to the use of social media for disaster management is the automatic identification of crisis-related messages. Most of the studies on this topic have focused on the analysis of data for a particular type of event in a specific language. This limits the possibility of generalizing existing approaches because models cannot be directly applied to new types of events or other languages. In this work, we study the task of automatically classifying messages that are related to crisis events by leveraging cross-language and cross-domain labeled data. Our goal is to make use of labeled data from high-resource languages to classify messages from other (low-resource) languages and/or of new (previously unseen) types of crisis situations. For our study we consolidated from the literature a large unified dataset containing multiple crisis events and languages. Our empirical findings show that it is indeed possible to leverage data from crisis events in English to classify the same type of event in other languages, such as Spanish and Italian (80.0% F1-score). Furthermore, we achieve good performance for the cross-domain task (80.0% F1-score) in a cross-lingual setting. Overall, our work contributes to improving the data scarcity problem that is so important for multilingual crisis classification. In particular, mitigating cold-start situations in emergency events, when time is of essence.


The role of prior information and computational power in Machine Learning

Science consists on conceiving hypotheses, confronting them with empirical evidence, and keeping only hypotheses which have not yet been falsified. Under deductive reasoning they are conceived in view of a theory and confronted with empirical evidence in an attempt to falsify it, and under inductive reasoning they are conceived based on observation, confronted with empirical evidence and a theory is established based on the not falsified hypotheses. When the hypotheses testing can be performed with quantitative data, the confrontation can be achieved with Machine Learning methods, whose quality is highly dependent on the hypotheses' complexity, hence on the proper insertion of prior information into the set of hypotheses seeking to decrease its complexity without loosing good hypotheses. However, Machine Learning tools have been applied under the pragmatic view of instrumentalism, which is concerned only with the performance of the methods and not with the understanding of their behavior, leading to methods which are not fully understood. In this context, we discuss how prior information and computational power can be employed to solve a learning problem, but while prior information and a careful design of the hypotheses space has as advantage the interpretability of the results, employing high computational power has the advantage of a higher performance. We discuss why learning methods which combine both should work better from an understanding and performance perspective, arguing in favor of basic theoretical research on Machine Learning, in special about how properties of classifiers may be identified in parameters of modern learning models.


Tourist Influx Raises Fears For Mexico's Wine Heartland

When Pau Pijoan began winemaking in Mexico's Guadalupe Valley it was home to little more than a dozen producers. Two decades later, he fears it is becoming a victim of its own success. The growing popularity of Mexico's wine heartland in Baja California has brought an influx of tourists -- and with them a proliferation of hotels, restaurants and other development. "When I bought land, there were 15 to 18 wine producers. Today, there are more than 200," said Pijoan, a veterinarian by trade. "We are responsible for this brutal and disorderly growth typical of Mexico," he said.


XMD: An End-to-End Framework for Interactive Explanation-Based Debugging of NLP Models

NLP models are susceptible to learning spurious biases (i.e., bugs) that work on some datasets but do not properly reflect the underlying task. Explanation-based model debugging aims to resolve spurious biases by showing human users explanations of model behavior, asking users to give feedback on the behavior, then using the feedback to update the model. While existing model debugging methods have shown promise, their prototype-level implementations provide limited practical utility. Thus, we propose XMD: the first open-source, end-to-end framework for explanation-based model debugging. Given task- or instance-level explanations, users can flexibly provide various forms of feedback via an intuitive, web-based UI. After receiving user feedback, XMD automatically updates the model in real time, by regularizing the model so that its explanations align with the user feedback. The new model can then be easily deployed into real-world applications via Hugging Face. Using XMD, we can improve the model's OOD performance on text classification tasks by up to 18%.


Multilingual Multimodality: A Taxonomical Survey of Datasets, Techniques, Challenges and Opportunities

Contextualizing language technologies beyond a single language kindled embracing multiple modalities and languages. Individually, each of these directions undoubtedly proliferated into several NLP tasks. Despite this momentum, most of the multimodal research is primarily centered around English and multilingual research is primarily centered around contexts from text modality. Challenging this conventional setup, researchers studied the unification of multilingual and multimodal (MultiX) streams. The main goal of this work is to catalogue and characterize these works by charting out the categories of tasks, datasets and methods to address MultiX scenarios. To this end, we review the languages studied, gold or silver data with parallel annotations, and understand how these modalities and languages interact in modeling. We present an account of the modeling approaches along with their strengths and weaknesses to better understand what scenarios they can be used reliably. Following this, we present the high-level trends in the overall paradigm of the field. Finally, we conclude by presenting a road map of challenges and promising research directions.


Time-rEversed diffusioN tEnsor Transformer: A new TENET of Few-Shot Object Detection

In this paper, we tackle the challenging problem of Few-shot Object Detection. Existing FSOD pipelines (i) use average-pooled representations that result in information loss; and/or (ii) discard position information that can help detect object instances. Consequently, such pipelines are sensitive to large intra-class appearance and geometric variations between support and query images. To address these drawbacks, we propose a Time-rEversed diffusioN tEnsor Transformer (TENET), which i) forms high-order tensor representations that capture multi-way feature occurrences that are highly discriminative, and ii) uses a transformer that dynamically extracts correlations between the query image and the entire support set, instead of a single average-pooled support embedding. We also propose a Transformer Relation Head (TRH), equipped with higher-order representations, which encodes correlations between query regions and the entire support set, while being sensitive to the positional variability of object instances. Our model achieves state-of-the-art results on PASCAL VOC, FSOD, and COCO.
