Incremental procedural and sensorimotor learning in cognitive humanoid robots

The ability to automatically learn movements and behaviors of increasing complexity is a long-term goal in autonomous systems. Indeed, this is a very complex problem that involves understanding how knowledge is acquired and reused by humans as well as proposing mechanisms that allow artificial agents to reuse previous knowledge. Inspired by Jean Piaget's theory's first three sensorimotor substages, this work presents a cognitive agent based on CONAIM (Conscious Attention-Based Integrated Model) that can learn procedures incrementally. Throughout the paper, we show the cognitive functions required in each substage and how adding new functions helps address tasks previously unsolved by the agent. Experiments were conducted with a humanoid robot in a simulated environment modeled with the Cognitive Systems Toolkit (CST) performing an object tracking task. The system is modeled using a single procedural learning mechanism based on Reinforcement Learning. The increasing agent's cognitive complexity is managed by adding new terms to the reward function for each learning phase. Results show that this approach is capable of solving complex tasks incrementally.
Designing Socially Assistive Robots: Exploring Israeli and German Designers' Perceptions

Socially assistive robots (SARs) are becoming more prevalent in everyday life, emphasizing the need to make them socially acceptable and aligned with users' expectations. Robots' appearance impacts users' behaviors and attitudes towards them. Therefore, product designers choose visual qualities to give the robot a character and to imply its functionality and personality. In this work, we sought to investigate the effect of cultural differences on Israeli and German designers' perceptions and preferences regarding the suitable visual qualities of SARs in four different contexts: a service robot for an assisted living/retirement residence facility, a medical assistant robot for a hospital environment, a COVID-19 officer robot, and a personal assistant robot for domestic use. Our results indicate that Israeli and German designers share similar perceptions of visual qualities and most of the robotics roles. However, we found differences in the perception of the COVID-19 officer robot's role and, by that, its most suitable visual design. This work indicates that context and culture play a role in users' perceptions and expectations; therefore, they should be taken into account when designing new SARs for diverse contexts.
Hypergraphs with Edge-Dependent Vertex Weights: Spectral Clustering based on the 1-Laplacian

We propose a flexible framework for defining the 1-Laplacian of a hypergraph that incorporates edge-dependent vertex weights. These weights are able to reflect varying importance of vertices within a hyperedge, thus conferring the hypergraph model higher expressivity than homogeneous hypergraphs. We then utilize the eigenvector associated with the second smallest eigenvalue of the hypergraph 1-Laplacian to cluster the vertices. From a theoretical standpoint based on an adequately defined normalized Cheeger cut, this procedure is expected to achieve higher clustering accuracy than that based on the traditional Laplacian. Indeed, we confirm that this is the case using real-world datasets to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed spectral clustering approach. Moreover, we show that for a special case within our framework, the corresponding hypergraph 1-Laplacian is equivalent to the 1-Laplacian of a related graph, whose eigenvectors can be computed more efficiently, facilitating the adoption on larger datasets.
YourTTS: Towards Zero-Shot Multi-Speaker TTS and Zero-Shot Voice Conversion for everyone

YourTTS brings the power of a multilingual approach to the task of zero-shot multi-speaker TTS. Our method builds upon the VITS model and adds several novel modifications for zero-shot multi-speaker and multilingual training. We achieved state-of-the-art (SOTA) results in zero-shot multi-speaker TTS and results comparable to SOTA in zero-shot voice conversion on the VCTK dataset. Additionally, our approach achieves promising results in a target language with a single-speaker dataset, opening possibilities for zero-shot multi-speaker TTS and zero-shot voice conversion systems in low-resource languages. Finally, it is possible to fine-tune the YourTTS model with less than 1 minute of speech and achieve state-of-the-art results in voice similarity and with reasonable quality. This is important to allow synthesis for speakers with a very different voice or recording characteristics from those seen during training.
QNLP in Practice: Running Compositional Models of Meaning on a Quantum Computer

Quantum Natural Language Processing (QNLP) deals with the design and implementation of NLP models intended to be run on quantum hardware. In this paper, we present results on the first NLP experiments conducted on Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) computers for datasets of size greater than 100 sentences. Exploiting the formal similarity of the compositional model of meaning by Coecke, Sadrzadeh, and Clark (2010) with quantum theory, we create representations for sentences that have a natural mapping to quantum circuits. We use these representations to implement and successfully train NLP models that solve simple sentence classification tasks on quantum hardware. We conduct quantum simulations that compare the syntax-sensitive model of Coecke et al. with two baselines that use less or no syntax; specifically, we implement the quantum analogues of a "bag-of-words" model, where syntax is not taken into account at all, and of a word-sequence model, where only word order is respected. We demonstrate that all models converge smoothly both in simulations and when run on quantum hardware, and that the results are the expected ones based on the nature of the tasks and the datasets used. Another important goal of this paper is to describe in a way accessible to AI and NLP researchers the main principles, process and challenges of experiments on quantum hardware. Our aim in doing this is to take the first small steps in this unexplored research territory and pave the way for practical Quantum Natural Language Processing.
Inferring the past: a combined CNN-LSTM deep learning framework to fuse satellites for historical inundation mapping

Mapping floods using satellite data is crucial for managing and mitigating flood risks. Satellite imagery enables rapid and accurate analysis of large areas, providing critical information for emergency response and disaster management. Historical flood data derived from satellite imagery can inform long-term planning, risk management strategies, and insurance-related decisions. The Sentinel-1 satellite is effective for flood detection, but for longer time series, other satellites such as MODIS can be used in combination with deep learning models to accurately identify and map past flood events. We here develop a combined CNN--LSTM deep learning framework to fuse Sentinel-1 derived fractional flooded area with MODIS data in order to infer historical floods over Bangladesh. The results show how our framework outperforms a CNN-only approach and takes advantage of not only space, but also time in order to predict the fractional inundated area. The model is applied to historical MODIS data to infer the past 20 years of inundation extents over Bangladesh and compared to a thresholding algorithm and a physical model. Our fusion model outperforms both models in consistency and capacity to predict peak inundation extents.
Could AI save the Amazon rainforest?
It took just the month of March this year to fell an area of forest in Triunfo do Xingu equivalent to 700 football pitches. At more than 16,000 sq km, this Environmental Protection Area (APA) in the south-eastern corner of the Brazilian Amazon, in the state of Pará, is one of the largest conservation areas in the world. And according to a new tool that predicts where deforestation will happen next, it's also the APA at highest risk of even more destruction. The tool, PrevisIA, is an artificial intelligence platform created by researchers at environmental nonprofit Imazon. Instead of trying to repair damage done by deforestation after the fact, they wanted to find a way to prevent it from happening at all.
An Interpretable Hybrid Predictive Model of COVID-19 Cases using Autoregressive Model and LSTM

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had a profound impact on global health and economy, making it crucial to build accurate and interpretable data-driven predictive models for COVID-19 cases to improve public policy making. The extremely large scale of the pandemic and the intrinsically changing transmission characteristics pose a great challenge for effectively predicting COVID-19 cases. To address this challenge, we propose a novel hybrid model in which the interpretability of the Autoregressive model (AR) and the predictive power of the long short-term memory neural networks (LSTM) join forces. The proposed hybrid model is formalized as a neural network with an architecture that connects two composing model blocks, of which the relative contribution is decided data-adaptively in the training procedure. We demonstrate the favorable performance of the hybrid model over its two single composing models as well as other popular predictive models through comprehensive numerical studies on two data sources under multiple evaluation metrics. Specifically, in county-level data of 8 California counties, our hybrid model achieves 4.173% MAPE, outperforming the composing AR (5.629%) and LSTM (4.934%) alone on average. In country-level datasets, our hybrid model outperforms the widely-used predictive models such as AR, LSTM, Support Vector Machines, Gradient Boosting, and Random Forest, in predicting the COVID-19 cases in Japan, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Singapore, Italy, and the United Kingdom. In addition to the predictive performance, we illustrate the interpretability of our proposed hybrid model using the estimated AR component, which is a key feature that is not shared by most black-box predictive models for COVID-19 cases. Our study provides a new and promising direction for building effective and interpretable data-driven models for COVID-19 cases, which could have significant implications for public health policy making and control of the current COVID-19 and potential future pandemics.
QICHWABASE: A Quechua Language and Knowledge Base for Quechua Communities

Over the last decade, the Web has increasingly become a space of language and knowledge representation. However, it is only true for well-spread languages and well-established communities, while minority communities and their resources received less attention. In this paper, we propose QICHWABASE to support the harmonization process of the Quechua language and knowledge, and its community. For doing it, we adopt methods and tools that could become a game changer in favour of Quechua communities around the world. We conclude that the methodology and tools adopted on building QICHWABASE, which is a Wikibase instance, could enhance the presence of minorities on the Web.
Data-Driven Subgroup Identification for Linear Regression

Medical studies frequently require to extract the relationship between each covariate and the outcome with statistical confidence measures. To do this, simple parametric models are frequently used (e.g. coefficients of linear regression) but usually fitted on the whole dataset. However, it is common that the covariates may not have a uniform effect over the whole population and thus a unified simple model can miss the heterogeneous signal. For example, a linear model may be able to explain a subset of the data but fail on the rest due to the nonlinearity and heterogeneity in the data. In this paper, we propose DDGroup (data-driven group discovery), a data-driven method to effectively identify subgroups in the data with a uniform linear relationship between the features and the label. DDGroup outputs an interpretable region in which the linear model is expected to hold. It is simple to implement and computationally tractable for use. We show theoretically that, given a large enough sample, DDGroup recovers a region where a single linear model with low variance is well-specified (if one exists), and experiments on real-world medical datasets confirm that it can discover regions where a local linear model has improved performance. Our experiments also show that DDGroup can uncover subgroups with qualitatively different relationships which are missed by simply applying parametric approaches to the whole dataset.
