The Dire Defect of 'Multilingual' AI Content Moderation

This is part of the data recipe for Facebook's new large language model, which the company claims is able to detect and rein in harmful content in over 100 languages. Bumble uses similar technology to detect rude and unwanted messages in at least 15 languages. Google uses it for everything from translation to filtering newspaper comment sections. All have comparable recipes and the same dominant ingredient: English-language data. For years, social media companies have focused their automatic content detection and removal efforts more on content in English than the world's 7,000 other languages.


Deep Generative Model for Simultaneous Range Error Mitigation and Environment Identification

Received waveforms contain rich information for both range information and environment semantics. However, its full potential is hard to exploit under multipath and non-line-of-sight conditions. This paper proposes a deep generative model (DGM) for simultaneous range error mitigation and environment identification. In particular, we present a Bayesian model for the generative process of the received waveform composed by latent variables for both range-related features and environment semantics. The simultaneous range error mitigation and environment identification is interpreted as an inference problem based on the DGM, and implemented in a unique end-to-end learning scheme. Comprehensive experiments on a general Ultra-wideband dataset demonstrate the superior performance on range error mitigation, scalability to different environments, and novel capability on simultaneous environment identification.


Do All Languages Cost the Same? Tokenization in the Era of Commercial Language Models

Language models have graduated from being research prototypes to commercialized products offered as web APIs, and recent works have highlighted the multilingual capabilities of these products. The API vendors charge their users based on usage, more specifically on the number of ``tokens'' processed or generated by the underlying language models. What constitutes a token, however, is training data and model dependent with a large variance in the number of tokens required to convey the same information in different languages. In this work, we analyze the effect of this non-uniformity on the fairness of an API's pricing policy across languages. We conduct a systematic analysis of the cost and utility of OpenAI's language model API on multilingual benchmarks in 22 typologically diverse languages. We show evidence that speakers of a large number of the supported languages are overcharged while obtaining poorer results. These speakers tend to also come from regions where the APIs are less affordable to begin with. Through these analyses, we aim to increase transparency around language model APIs' pricing policies and encourage the vendors to make them more equitable.


A Semi-Supervised Learning Approach for Ranging Error Mitigation Based on UWB Waveform

Localization systems based on ultra-wide band (UWB) measurements can have unsatisfactory performance in harsh environments due to the presence of non-line-of-sight (NLOS) errors. Learning-based methods for error mitigation have shown great performance improvement via directly exploiting the wideband waveform instead of handcrafted features. However, these methods require data samples fully labeled with actual measurement errors for training, which leads to time-consuming data collection. In this paper, we propose a semi-supervised learning method based on variational Bayes for UWB ranging error mitigation. Combining deep learning techniques and statistic tools, our method can efficiently accumulate knowledge from both labeled and unlabeled data samples. Extensive experiments illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method under different supervision rates, and the superiority compared to other fully supervised methods even at a low supervision rate.


ConGraT: Self-Supervised Contrastive Pretraining for Joint Graph and Text Embeddings

We propose ConGraT(Contrastive Graph-Text pretraining), a general, self-supervised method for jointly learning separate representations of texts and nodes in a parent (or ``supervening'') graph, where each text is associated with one of the nodes. Datasets fitting this paradigm are common, from social media (users and posts), to citation networks over articles, to link graphs over web pages. We expand on prior work by providing a general, self-supervised, joint pretraining method, one which does not depend on particular dataset structure or a specific task. Our method uses two separate encoders for graph nodes and texts, which are trained to align their representations within a common latent space. Training uses a batch-wise contrastive learning objective inspired by prior work on joint text and image encoding. As graphs are more structured objects than images, we also extend the training objective to incorporate information about node similarity and plausible next guesses in matching nodes and texts. Experiments on various datasets reveal that ConGraT outperforms strong baselines on various downstream tasks, including node and text category classification and link prediction. ChatGPT as your Personal Data Scientist

The rise of big data has amplified the need for efficient, user-friendly automated machine learning (AutoML) tools. However, the intricacy of understanding domain-specific data and defining prediction tasks necessitates human intervention making the process time-consuming while preventing full automation. Instead, envision an intelligent agent capable of assisting users in conducting AutoML tasks through intuitive, natural conversations without requiring in-depth knowledge of the underlying machine learning (ML) processes. This agent's key challenge is to accurately comprehend the user's prediction goals and, consequently, formulate precise ML tasks, adjust data sets and model parameters accordingly, and articulate results effectively. In this paper, we take a pioneering step towards this ambitious goal by introducing a ChatGPT-based conversational data-science framework to act as a "personal data scientist". Precisely, we utilize Large Language Models (ChatGPT) to build a natural interface between the users and the ML models (Scikit-Learn), which in turn, allows us to approach this ambitious problem with a realistic solution. Our model pivots around four dialogue states: Data Visualization, Task Formulation, Prediction Engineering, and Result Summary and Recommendation. Each state marks a unique conversation phase, impacting the overall user-system interaction. Multiple LLM instances, serving as "micro-agents", ensure a cohesive conversation flow, granting us granular control over the conversation's progression. In summary, we developed an end-to-end system that not only proves the viability of the novel concept of conversational data science but also underscores the potency of LLMs in solving complex tasks. Interestingly, its development spotlighted several critical weaknesses in the current LLMs (ChatGPT) and highlighted substantial opportunities for improvement.


Recent Advancements in Deep Learning Applications and Methods for Autonomous Navigation: A Comprehensive Review

This review article is an attempt to survey all recent AI based techniques used to deal with major functions in This review paper presents a comprehensive overview of end-to-end deep learning frameworks used in the context of autonomous navigation, including obstacle detection, scene perception, path planning, and control. The paper aims to bridge the gap between autonomous navigation and deep learning by analyzing recent research studies and evaluating the implementation and testing of deep learning methods. It emphasizes the importance of navigation for mobile robots, autonomous vehicles, and unmanned aerial vehicles, while also acknowledging the challenges due to environmental complexity, uncertainty, obstacles, dynamic environments, and the need to plan paths for multiple agents. The review highlights the rapid growth of deep learning in engineering data science and its development of innovative navigation methods. It discusses recent interdisciplinary work related to this field and provides a brief perspective on the limitations, challenges, and potential areas of growth for deep learning methods in autonomous navigation. Finally, the paper summarizes the findings and practices at different stages, correlating existing and future methods, their applicability, scalability, and limitations. The review provides a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners working in the field of autonomous navigation and deep learning.


Dissecting Transformer Length Extrapolation via the Lens of Receptive Field Analysis

Length extrapolation permits training a transformer language model on short sequences that preserves perplexities when tested on substantially longer sequences. A relative positional embedding design, ALiBi, has had the widest usage to date. We dissect ALiBi via the lens of receptive field analysis empowered by a novel cumulative normalized gradient tool. The concept of receptive field further allows us to modify the vanilla Sinusoidal positional embedding to create ~\textbf{Sandwich}, the first parameter-free relative positional embedding design that truly length information uses longer than the training sequence. Sandwich shares with KERPLE and T5 the same logarithmic decaying temporal bias pattern with learnable relative positional embeddings; these elucidate future extrapolatable positional embedding design.


RSRM: Reinforcement Symbolic Regression Machine

In nature, the behaviors of many complex systems can be described by parsimonious math equations. Automatically distilling these equations from limited data is cast as a symbolic regression process which hitherto remains a grand challenge. Keen efforts in recent years have been placed on tackling this issue and demonstrated success in symbolic regression. However, there still exist bottlenecks that current methods struggle to break when the discrete search space tends toward infinity and especially when the underlying math formula is intricate. To this end, we propose a novel Reinforcement Symbolic Regression Machine (RSRM) that masters the capability of uncovering complex math equations from only scarce data. The RSRM model is composed of three key modules: (1) a Monte Carlo tree search (MCTS) agent that explores optimal math expression trees consisting of pre-defined math operators and variables, (2) a Double Q-learning block that helps reduce the feasible search space of MCTS via properly understanding the distribution of reward, and (3) a modulated sub-tree discovery block that heuristically learns and defines new math operators to improve representation ability of math expression trees. Biding of these modules yields the state-of-the-art performance of RSRM in symbolic regression as demonstrated by multiple sets of benchmark examples. The RSRM model shows clear superiority over several representative baseline models.


Feed Me: Robotic Infiltration of Poison Frog Families

We present the design and operation of tadpole-mimetic robots prepared for a study of the parenting behaviors of poison frogs, which pair bond and raise their offspring. The mission of these robots is to convince poison frog parents that they are tadpoles, which need to be fed. Tadpoles indicate this need, at least in part, by wriggling with a characteristic frequency and amplitude. While the study is in progress, preliminary indications are that the TadBots have passed their test, at least for father frogs. We discuss the design and operational requirements for producing convincing TadBots and provide some details of the study design and plans for future work.
