NASA astronaut spots SpaceX's recycled capsule

Daily Mail - Science & tech

A SpaceX Dragon capsule that brought supplies to the International Space Station has splashed down as planned in the Pacific Ocean. SpaceX announced on Twitter that the Dragon hit the water off the California coast shortly after 5 a.m. After being released by the space station's robotic arm, the capsule completed a 5½-hour journey back to Earth, part of which was captured by NASA astronaut Jack Fischer. NASA astronaut Jack Fischer photographed the SpaceX Dragon capsule as it reentered Earth's atmosphere before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean west of Baja California at 8:12 a.m. EDT, July 3, 2017. SpaceX Dragon Becomes First Re-Flown Commercial Spacecraft To Successfully Return To Earth

International Business Times

On Monday, Elon Musk's SpaceX became the first to re-fly a cargo spacecraft to the International Space Station and back, according to Space.com. A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, with a Dragon spacecraft onboard, left Earth on June 3, carrying over 4,100 pounds of cargo to the International Space Station. It successfully landed in the Pacific Ocean, southwest of the California coast on Monday morning at 8:14 a.m. SpaceX planned to take the spacecraft back to Long Beach, California after it landed, remove important cargo and send it to Houston, Texas for NASA analysis, according to a NASA blog post. Afterward, Dragon would return to a SpaceX test facility in McGregor, Texas.

Build PMML-based Applications and Generate Predictions in AWS Amazon Web Services

#artificialintelligence

If you generate machine learning (ML) models, you know that the key challenge is exporting and importing them into other frameworks to separate model generation and prediction. Many applications use PMML (Predictive Model Markup Language) to move ML models from one framework to another. PMML is an XML representation of a data mining model. In this post, I show how to build a PMML application on AWS. First, you build a PMML model in Apache Spark using Amazon EMR.

Video Friday: Self-Driving Potato, NASA at Mars, and Autonomous Sumo Robots

IEEE Spectrum Robotics

Video Friday is your weekly selection of awesome robotics videos, collected by your Automaton bloggers. We'll also be posting a weekly calendar of upcoming robotics events for the next two months; here's what we have so far (send us your events!): Let us know if you have suggestions for next week, and enjoy today's videos. At the Queensland University of Technology, in Australia, roboticists have spent the last 14 years honing a robot navigation system modeled on the brains of rats. This biologically inspired approach, they hope, could help robots navigate dynamic environments without requiring advanced, costly sensors and computationally intensive algorithms.

Earthquakes may be the rare issue uniting Democrats and Republicans in California

Los Angeles Times

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti urges the public to ask their members of Congress to support continued federal funding of the earthquake early warning system. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti urges the public to ask their members of Congress to support continued federal funding of the earthquake early warning system. In this hyper-partisan era, there may be one issue that unites California Democrats and Republicans: Earthquakes. Elected officials from both parties have supported an earthquake early warning system for the West Coast that, after years of work, was scheduled to begin its first limited public operation next year. But President Trump's budget proposal calls for cuts that experts say would kill the warning network.

Apple CEO Tim Cook finally lifts lid on self-driving car project

The Independent - Tech

After years toiling away in secret on a car project, Apple chief executive Tim Cook has for the first time elaborated on the company's plans in the automotive market. "We're focusing on autonomous systems," Mr Cook said in a 5 June interview on Bloomberg Television that amounted to his most detailed comments yet on Apple's automotive plans. "It's a core technology that we view as very important." He likened the effort to "the mother of all AI projects," saying it's "probably one of the most difficult AI projects to work on". The prospect of self-driving cars has seen a slew of technology companies push into the auto industry, according to McKinsey & Co. Alphabet's Waymo unit has signed partnerships with Fiat Chrysler and Lyft to develop the technology.

SpaceX's re-launched Dragon capsule arrives at the ISS

Engadget

This weekend's big SpaceX news has nearly reached its logical conclusion point: the reused Dragon cargo capsule has been successfully captured by the International Space Station. While that sounds an awful lot like the opening scene of a certain space opera, it's all par for the course. From here, the ISS' ground crew will take control of the station's robotic arm and dock the capsule, according to NASA. TechCrunch writes that resupply craft will stay attached for around a month before returning to Earth. If all goes according to plan, the capsule will be recovered after landing in the Pacific Ocean and then be refurbished for another trip to the stars -- you know, SpaceX's thing.
